A woman of God, she attended Fredericktown Freewill Baptist Church and Centerburg Enterprise Church. Honest to her core, she was a bit spunky and possessed an ornery streak. Always the straight shooter, she was a "tough love kind of mother", however it was another story with her treasured grandkids. Dorothy leaves to cherish her memory her beloved children: Glenn Emmett, Danny Coleman, Denise (Tracy) Sagar, Dawn (Nick) Campbell, James "Randall" Coleman, 6 grandchildren: Jessie (Holly) Zachary (Cassidy), Travis, Josh (AnnMarie) Seth (Logan), Grant, 10 great-grandchildren, her brother Enoch Adkins; sisters Laura Mailey, Mary (Jerry) Fouts, and Joyce (Dick) Wertz; sisters-in-law Rose, Betty, Kim, Sharon, Cindy, and Linda; brothers-in-law Chuck Freeman, Dick Addison, and Joe Pukansky, numerous nephews, nieces, and extended family. Sandra Smith

Age - 76

October 22, 2023

Sandra "Sandy" Ann Smith, 76, of Sunbury, Ohio passed away Wednesday, Oct 18, 2023 peacefully at Kobacker House surrounded by her loving family. Sandy was born on June 19, 1947 in Columbus, Ohio to her parents Pearl Smith and Grace (Ferguson) Smith. In 1965, she graduated from Columbus North High School and then went on to graduate from Nationwide Cosmetology School. Sandy did hair for 56 years, serving each of her customers with love and skill and treating them like family. Sandy leaves to cherish her memory her daughter Jennifer (Raymond) Aronhalt; her granddaughter Samantha (Jordan) Hicks; her great grandsons Carter and Dawson Hicks whom she loved dearly; sisters Betty Smith, Pat Baughman, and Jan Smith; and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews; her friend Clark and countless other friends whom she touched in the course of her life. Sandy is preceded in death by her parents Pearl and Grace Smith and her brothers Billy, Barney and Bob Smith. She will be dearly missed. Sandy was a generous and loving woman. By her vocation, she was a caretaker; refreshing the mode of many by bringing beauty and style into their lives after they sat in her chair. Such was her nurturing nature that to almost all, including friends, She was known as "Nana. " She was also known as "Mom" or "Aunt Sandy" Sandy was the first to lend an understanding ear. Not only would she freely give of her time to another in need but would give the proverbial shirt off her back without a second thought. Up until her final months, Sandy was actively living life and checking experiences off her bucket list. One of her more notable excursions took place during her trip to Key West when Sandy and her daughter Jennifer went to Mallory Square while the rest of the family was out on a fishing charter. Sandy and Jennifer ended up at Fat Tuesdays where Sandy suggested that they purchase frozen daiquiris at 10 am and dubbed them "breakfast smoothies. " Another of her bucket list adventures took place when her granddaughter Samantha graduated and Sandy went with her family on a cruise. Sandy was a wonderful mom, a proud grandmother and a doting great grandmother. Her family was the light of her life and she was the center of theirs. Sandy lived life to its fullest. No matter the circumstances or hardships she faced, she always found a way to see the sun shine from behind the clouds. She was a strong woman and a fighter. The autumn year of her life was fraught with frustrations, hardships and mountains seemingly too tall to climb. But Sandy faced this with bravery and grace. Pastor Dave of Sunbury Christian Church became a fixture in Sandy's and her family's lives as the challenges mounted. His ministry brought peace and hope in a time when things threatened to feel hopeless. Sandy was a sassy and spunky woman that was magnetic to all those involved in her care at Kobacker House and made such an impression on Pr. Dave that he said, "Sandy is going to heaven and she is doing so at full throttle. " Her brave battle with ALS took much from Sandy. Yet at the end it failed to take away the things that made Sandy the special and beloved woman she was: Her family, her friends and ability to make them, her spirit and her faith. Mom aka Nana may not have been perfect but she was perfect enough for us. The family would like to make a special thanks to her home hospice team and all of the staff at Kobacker House for treating Sandy with the care, love and kindness like she was their family. Arrangements were made with DeVore Snyder Funeral Home in Sunbury, Ohio. A Celebration of Sandy's Life will be held at Sunbury Christian Church Thursday, 870 Admiral Drive, Sunbury, Ohio 43074, November 9, 2023. Vance Crotty

Vance Crotty

Age - 25

August 31, 2023

Vance Timothy Crotty, 25, passed away unexpectedly Monday, August 28, 2023. Vance was born January 1, 1998, as the first natural born baby in Columbus of that year. Vance was delivered into the adoring arms of his parents Mike and Maria (Mullins) Crotty. Vance graduated high school and was employed as a leadership apprentice at his parents' company, Spirit Services, at the untimely moment of his passing. Vance leaves to cherish his memory his loving parents Mike and Maria Crotty; brothers Quinn Crotty and Grant Crotty; grandparents Ronald and Anna Marie Mullins; grandmother Nina Crotty and many other friends. Vance joins in the eternal rest of heaven his grandfather Timothy Crotty and will be deeply missed. Vance was an active and driven young man. He was very athletic, playing lax and football under the tutelage of his father Mike. He loved to hike. Anything to do with being out in and communing with nature was a magnet to Vance. He found peace and simplicity in the natural awe of God's creation, experiencing a restfulness of his soul which he could find nowhere else. This speaks highly to who Vance was in his tragically brief time with us. He was "tapped in" to the lines that read in between the narrative of daily life. He saw the spiritual and symbolic nature of all things which in its own way made him feel apart from those he loved who also loved him. He was impressively wise beyond his years. He had an ability to see below the surface of the face value nature of any situation and garner insight and advice from it that would serve as a difference maker for whoever was struggling with it. This came from Vance's deeply introspective nature. Vance had many struggles with which he was at constant battle. He was aware of the mountain he faced and, despite the ominous threat of its height, never once gave up on reaching the pinnacle of his potential. For all that Vance faced, there was always a light in him tenfold. His brother remarked, in the 24 hours leading up to his death Vance was evoking a message and a conviction of hope and most importantly a mission of love and loving. Vance was actively seeking to make his world right and was working on a personal relationship with the Lord. He was coming to understand that through faith and compassion, the greatest of wounds could be healed. Though Vance was unable to realize this healing while in the tender embrace of those who are left here in grief and in sorrow, he now knows the comfort and peace of heaven where there is no pain, no sickness, and no sorrow. The space Vance leaves in our lives is unfillable and the pain it causes cannot be numbed. This is because of how special and how very loved Vance was. Vance was the candle that burned too bright in its attempt to bring so much light to the world around him. Vance was the lamb that yearned so deeply for the safety and comfort of The Shepard that from the wilderness God called him home where he waits for us to be with him. Friends may call Friday September 1, 2023, at DeVore Snyder Funeral Home in Sunbury, Ohio from 2pm to 4pm and then again from 6pm to 8pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place Saturday, September 2 at St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Sunbury, Ohio at 11am. There will be a funeral procession after the mass to Kokosing Nature Preserve in Gambier, Ohio for a natural green burial. All are welcome to attend.Show more
