Martha P. Russell, 85, of Shippensburg, departed this life on the morning of Sunday, September 10, 2023, at WellSpan Chambersburg Hospital. She was born on May 12, 1938, in Newville, the daughter of the late Lester and Thelma (Unger) Lehman. Martha married William H. Russell on February 16, 1982, in Hagerstown, MD. He preceded her in death on December 4, 2018. Martha worked at the former C. H. Masland Co. , Carlisle, for thirty-eight years, retiring as a tufter. After retirement, she worked at BonWorth and Hallmark at the former Chambersburg Mall. Martha was a member of the Chambersburg Bible Church. Over the years, in her free time, she enjoyed bowling, camping, flea markets, picnics, puzzles, watching for hummingbirds, and traveling the country. Martha is survived by her daughter, Penny Hess of Carlisle; her son, Rusty Shughart and wife Guoping of Gettysburg; step-daughter, Darlene Russell of Shippensburg; granddaughter, Ting-Ting Qian of California; five step-grandchildren, Todd Armstrong of Shippensburg, Ethan Armstrong and wife Karissa of Indianapolis, IN, Cori Flannagan and husband Scott of North Carolina, Teri Harmon and husband Matthew of Ft. Wayne, IN, and Keli Teeters and husband Daniel of Ft. Wayne, IN; four step-great grandchildren, Ava Armstrong of Indianapolis, IN, Rory Flannagan of North Carolina, Jonathan Harmon, and Ezekiel Harmon, both of Ft. Wayne, IN; four brothers, Steven, Randy, Joseph, and Thomas Lehman, all of Newville; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Martha was preceded in death by a step-daughter, Janet Lacey; and two brothers. Her funeral service will be held at 11:00 a. m. , on Friday, September 15, 2023, at the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc. , Shippensburg. Pastor Gary Yoder will officiate. Interment will follow in the Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens, Carlisle. Viewing will be one hour prior to the service on Friday morning at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Paul W. Ward, Jr. , 81, of Chambersburg, passed away the morning of Thursday, December 7, 2023 at the Chambersburg Hospital. He was born on Thursday, November 26, 1942 in Washington, PA, a son of the late Paul W. and Henrietta Bertrand Ward, Sr. He married Linda C. Parsons on June 26, 1965. Paul obtained his Master's Degree in social work from West Virginia University and worked for the Juvenile Court Judges Commission as a social worker. He was also a United States Air Force Veteran serving during the Vietnam War Era. Paul was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and enjoyed playing basketball. Throughout his life, he loved traveling with his wife and spending time at the beach. Paul was proud of his 1987 Mustang and enjoyed tinkering with it in the garage. Above all else in life, he loved his family and cherished watching his grandchildren in their sporting activities. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Linda C. Ward of Chambersburg; two children, Paul W. (Laurie) Ward III of Newville and Dawn M. (Matthew) Mentzer of Chambersburg; three grandchildren, Kimberly Ward, Morgan (Cade) Brindle, and R. Luke Mentzer; four siblings, Robert (Paula) Ward of Pittsburgh, Susan Kusic of Pittsburgh, Bonnie (Larry) Midler of Avella, and Nancy Shamitko of Washington, PA; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two siblings, Linda Lounder and Richard Ward. A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, December 21, 2023 at 2:00 p. m. at Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc. , Shippensburg. Pastor Bruce Levy will officiate. Following the service at the funeral home, military honors will be conducted by the Minutemen of the American Legion Post #223. A time of visitation with the family will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Paul will be privately laid to rest in the Spring Hill Cemetery. Helen F. Hykes, 94, of Shippensburg, departed this life on the morning of Monday, December 4, 2023, at the Shippensburg Health Care Center. She was born on December 29, 1928, in New Cumberland, a daughter of the late Calvin L. and Anna (Rothrock) Faust. Helen was a 1946 graduate of New Cumberland High School. She married Robert M. Hykes, Jr. , in January of 1952. He preceded her in death on October 30, 1996. Early in life, Helen worked at Fishers Florist, Shippensburg, prior to having her two sons. Afterward she became a consummate homemaker taking care of her family in all ways. Helen was a very active, longtime member of the Messiah United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday School for many years and was the founding director of the Junior Choir which she led for twenty-five years. Helen was also an integral part of Camp Penn, Waynesboro, for over twenty-five years. It was where she met her husband, Robert, and together became the summer managers, spending lots of time there with their family. It became a very special place and important part of her life. She is survived by two sons, John R. Hykes of Shippensburg, and David A. Hykes and wife Diane of Waynesboro; a granddaughter, Amanda S. Davis and husband Taylor of Hagerstown, MD; three great grandchildren, Avery, Grace, and Robert Davis, all of Hagerstown, MD; and several nieces. In addition to her parents and husband, Helen was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother. Her funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc. , Shippensburg. Her graveside service will be held at 11:00 a. m. , on Friday, December8, 2023, at the Spring Hill Cemetery. There will be no public viewing or visitation. Barbara Ann Mathna, 77, of Shippensburg, departed this life on the morning of Monday, December 4, 2023, at the WellSpan Chambersburg Hospital. She was born on April 21, 1946, in Birmingham, England, a daughter of the late Harry Mathna and Irene R. (Gough) Russell Trace and was a 1964 graduate of Shippensburg Area High School. Barbara held many jobs at several different companies throughout her life, but her favorite was working as a housekeeper for the late H. Ric Luhrs. In her free time she enjoyed sitting in the sun, reading, and playing on her iPad. Being born in England, Barbara had a fondness for drinking hot tea. She always enjoyed traveling, especially trips to the beach. Barbara also loved spending time with her family and friends, which was very important to her. She is survived by her step-father, Kenneth Trace of Fayetteville; daughter, Nicole Rotz and husband Tony of Shippensburg; granddaughter, Kalea Rotz of Shippensburg; grandson, Nicholas Yohe and wife Jordyn of Shippensburg; four great grandchildren, Mila, Harlow, Monroe, and Lennon; her sister, Suzanne Hurd and husband Roger of Greencastle; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Barbara was preceded in death by her biological parents and a niece Michelle "Shelly" Keppley. Her funeral service will be held at 10:00 a. m. , on Friday, December 8, 2023, at the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc. , Shippensburg. Pastor William Smith will officiate. Rodney A. Barthalow, 51, of Shippensburg, PA, died Wednesday, November 29, 2023 at Mercy House in Chambersburg, PA. He was born on January 26, 1972 in the Chambersburg Hospital to the late Lilly Anna Mae Pool. Rodney's life-long passion was volunteer fire-fighting. He began as a teenager at West End Fire and Rescue Co. in Shippensburg, PA. He volunteered at numerous fire companies all throughout Franklin County, the most recent being at St. Thomas Township Volunteer Fire and Rescue in St. Thomas, PA. Rodney's other passions were playing the guitar, rock music, and anything about the Civil War - especially The Battle of Gettysburg. He is survived by four children: Ciera R. (Kyle) Peck, Carol A. Barthalow, Jacob A. E. Barthalow and companion Savannah Wood, and Lisa A. M. Barthalow and companion Puru H. Shah. As well as three grandchildren: Lilly A. M. Pensinger, Evelynne R. Peck, and Westlee G. Peck. In addition to his mother, Rodney was proceeded in death by two stillborn children, Alicia A. Barthalow and Jonathan M. Barthalow. The family would like to express their gratitude to Mercy House of Chambersburg for the excellent end-of-life care Rodney received. Oscar J. Koontz, Jr. , 90, of Shippensburg, passed away the evening of Saturday, November 25, 2023 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on Wednesday, April 19, 1933 in Shippensburg, a son of the late Oscar J. and Lula V. (Willis) Koontz, Sr. Oscar was a 1951 graduate of the Shippensburg High School and a 1962 graduate of the Shippensburg State Teachers College, where he earned a double Master's degree in Education and Counseling. He was employed by the Big Spring School District as a school counselor. Oscar was a member of the Cumberland Valley Lodge #315 F. & A. M. , Valley Forest #145 Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Shippensburg Scottish Rite Club, and PA School of Retirees. He is survived by three sons, Oscar J. Koontz III and his companion Yvonne Harman of Shippensburg, David M. Koontz and his wife Wanda of Shippensburg, and Troy A. Koontz and his wife Mary of Artemas; two daughters, Rebecca L. Ross and her partner Rick Reath of Shippensburg, and Cheryl S. Rine and her husband Thomas of Orrstown; nine grandchildren, Jeremy Kelso and his wife Michelle, Samantha Mowery and her husband Chad, Brian Smith and his wife Anne, David Koontz, Jr. and his wife Ashley, Stephanie Heffernan and her husband Matt, Megan Raymond and her husband Alex, Justin Hoover and his wife Stephanie, Jarret Rine and his partner Kaylyn Hepfer, and Mitchell Rine; 17 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred P. (Butts) Koontz, who passed away on November 26, 2014. Also preceding in death are nine brothers and three sisters. L. Max Hutchison, Jr. , 92, of Shippensburg, passed away the evening of Friday, November 24, 2023 at the Chambersburg Hospital. He was born on April 15, 1931 in Orbisonia PA, Huntingdon County, a son of the late L. Max and Lois V. Conner Hutchison, Sr. He married N. Joan Steninger Hutchison on July 6, 1954. She preceded him in death on July 6, 2011. Max graduated from the former Captain Jack High School in Mt. Union. After high school, he obtained a degree in Dairy Husbandry from The Pennsylvania State University. In his earlier years, he assisted his father in the operation of the family farm, Shirley-Ayr Farms in Mt. Union. Following his years in farming, he moved to Shippensburg where he was the owner and operator of Fisher's Florist & Greenhouse for 29 years, until retiring in 1996. Max was a faithful member of the First Assembly of God in Shippensburg, where he was an active worship leader and Sunday School teacher. Above all else, Max was a faithful husband, father, and grandfather, who cherished his children and grandchildren. He is survived by three sons, J. Mark (Cindy) Hutchison of Palmyra, Paul B. (Regina) Hutchison of Shippensburg, and Timothy S. (Stacy) Hutchison of Shippensburg; two daughters, Anne E. Hutchison of Shippensburg, and Ruth E. (Jonathan) Stough of Mechanicsburg; eight grandchildren, Emily (Joe) Trace, Alycia Furry, Brian (Chelsea) Hutchison, Kaitlin Coy, Logan (Aimee) Hutchison, Luke Hutchison, Harrison Stough, and Jackson Stough; and 11 great-grandchildren, Graelyn, Ethan, Noah, Lily, Laila, Micah, Lana, Lochlan, Finley, Ellie, and Graham. In addition to his parents and spouse, he was preceded in death by four siblings, Maxine Wallett, Marjorie Kepner, Richard Hutchison, and Joanne Carroll. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 29, 2023 at 11:00 a. m. at the First Assembly of God, Shippensburg. Pastor Timothy Beitzel and Mr. Dan Summers will officiate.
