Marshall A. Winslow, Sr. , passed away on October 4, 2023. He was an avid hunter and Charter member of B & N Hunt Club which brought him tremendous joy and fellowship for many years. He also loved classic cars (especially his 1967 Ford Mustang) and was a member of the Mustang Club of Tidewater which was a great hobby for him. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He worked at N. A. S. Norfolk for 39 years and retired as an F-14 Tomcat Engine Planner. His meticulous nature was evident in every aspect of his life. Survivors include his loving wife of 62 years, Phyllis James Winslow; son, Marshall A. Winslow, Jr. , and his wife Jane; daughter, Michele Kathleen Crumpler and her husband Terry; grandchildren, Ellen Winslow, Erin Winslow, Lauren Soady and Austin Soady and his wife Carlie; step-grandson, John Crumpler; great granddaughter, Amelia Soady; and three nieces. He is predeceased by his sister, Leila Lee Senter. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 7, 2023 at 2pm at Rosewood Memorial Park, 631 N. Witchduck Rd. , Virginia Beach VA 23462. Virginia Beach -- Helen Tuzon Guieb, 67, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, passed away on December 3, 2023. She was born on September 26, 1956, in Pampanga, Philippines. Helen was a person full of life and enjoyed what life could provide to her. She was a doting and caring wife, protective and loving mother who always cared about her children above anything else. She was a social butterfly, making friends at work and enjoying the Todo Todo line dance. Helen loved going out with her family and traveling as much as she could during her journey. She was always curious about what the world could offer and cherished those who were close to her. Helen is survived by her husband, Noel Guieb, and her sons, Christian Guieb and Lawrence Guieb. She is also survived by her sister, Vilma Henson, and her brothers, Joey Tuzon, Roger Tuzon, and Evamarie Tuzon. She was preceded in death by her father, Jose Tuzon, and her mother, Erlinda Diaz Tuzon. Helen graduated from the College of Nursing in Pampanga. She had a diverse career, working at Vanguard, Lilian Vernon, and ultimately becoming a devoted housewife. Helen worshipped at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. In her leisure time, Helen enjoyed going out to eat, traveling, shopping, and simply enjoying life to the fullest. In memoriam of Helen, there will be a viewing held on December 14th, 2023, from 5 PM to 8 PM at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home & Crematory located at 1485 Kempsville Road, Virginia Beach, Virginia 23464. The following day, on December 15th, 2023, a mass will be held at 12:00 PM at the Catholic Church of Saint Mark, located at 1505 Kempsville Road, Virginia Beach, Virginia 23464. After the mass, Helen will be laid to rest at Colonial Grove Memorial Park, located at 3445 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach, Virginia 23456. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition or the ASPCA. Greta Anne Hovik (nee Sheehan) was received by her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on December 3rd, 2023. She was born on December 20th, 1944 in San Francisco, California. She proudly served the United States Navy, as a Government Employee, for 30 plus years supporting the ship repair industry for our Fleet at Naval Station Norfolk. Greta was a devout Catholic, very active at Christ the King and St. Steven the Martyr Parishes, and gave her life to God. She was so many things to so many people: a daughter, a sister, a mother, a wife, an aunt, a friend, a cousin, and her most cherished title: Gram. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Harriet Sheehan, who, along with our holy mother, Mary, were there to greet her in heaven. She is survived by her siblings -- Bill Sheehan, Barbara Griffin (Paul), and Greg Sheehan (Debbie); her children -- Eric Hovik (Meagan) and Kristina Stutzman (Henry); and, most importantly, her grandchildren -- Abigail Halpin (Max), Alex Hovik, and Emma Stutzman. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. She was a loving friend. . . always there to lend a helping hand, a listening ear, or share a good joke from the life she treasured. Greta lived for the happiness of others, and always put her friends, family, and co-workers before herself. She leaves behind a beautiful legacy and a lifetime of memories, showered in love and generosity, that will eternally live in our hearts. May she rest in peace, and may her memory continue to inspire each of us, especially those she leaves behind, to embrace life with love and joy in our hearts, as she did. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Herbert Quade

Age - 97

Herbert C. Quade, born July 21, 1926, passed away on October 7, 2023, at the age of 97. He was predeceased by his parents Herbert and Ethyl Quade and sister Etta May Johnson (Bob). He is survived by his wife of 70 years June Quade, son Preston Quade (Jean), daughter Eileen Sanders (Tom), grandson Dr. Patrick Quade (Meryl) granddaughter Laura Quade. A graduate of Denfeld High School in Duluth, MN, Herb joined the Navy after graduation. He had two tours of duty in the Navy: patrol in the Mediterranean at the close of World War II and action off Korea aboard the aircraft carrier USS Leyte during the Korean conflict. Herb had amusing shore leave stories from the Mediterranean (such as the day Elizabeth Taylor came aboard) and harrowing flight deck stories from Korea. On the Leyte at the time was his acquaintance Naval Aviator Jesse Brown whose final, fatal mission is documented in the book and film He met his future wife June of Proctor, MN, in Florida where she had relocated, and he was stationed. Since Herb was a career Navy man, the family relocated frequently before settling in Norfolk. Herb had a complete understanding of electricity and wireless communications. He first studied and later taught Naval Avionics and was an integral part of the team that designed and built the electronics for the Northrop Grumman E-2 Hawkeye Airborne Early Warning aircraft, (AEW). The Hawkeye is still flown and is a common site over Norfolk during training runs. Herb had a single-mindedness to make rank and by the end of his career had ascended to the highest non-commissioned rank in the Navy: Master Chief E9. Herb retired from the Navy at the age of 44 to pursue his varied interests. He drove a truck over the road for a few years before fully retiring. Herb had a lifetime interest in flight especially lighter than air aircraft: dirigibles and blimps. He half-jokingly said he was a reincarnated dirigible pilot from World War I. In his 80's he took a ride in a blimp and thoroughly enjoyed it. Herb always had a book going: current popular authors, aviation history, biographies of his heroes (e. g. Nicola Tesla,) and anything by Neville Shute, his favorite author. When home, Herb was the daddy of the block, neighbor children continually came over to see what Mr. Quade was up to in his garage and he kept their bicycles in good repair. While in the Navy, Herb was fastidious about the condition of his uniform. It was always squared away and this carried over into civilian life. When socializing he always wore creased slacks and ironed shirts. Which is not to say he ever learned to iron his clothes. Herb liked to be on the move. He bought his first Airstream trailer in 1965. Subsequently the family spent holidays and long weekends camping in the California hills and beyond. Years later Herb and June laughed to see that some of their trailer experiences were duplicated by the shenanigans enacted by Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz in the comedy --think large rock collecting. After upgrading to a larger Airstream, Herb and June joined the Wally Byam Caravan Club International. They took yearly club "caravans" to sites all over North America. Herb knew his rig inside and out, from repairing the propane refrigerator to repacking the bearings. He performed all the routine trailer maintenance himself and wrote safety and maintenance articles for the Club newsletter He also taught AARP driver safety classes. Before and after caravans, they would visit camp sites on the way to or from the caravan site. They took the Airstream to Duluth for yearly family visits or for Herb's high school reunions, which he much enjoyed. Herb loved to drive. For many years he drove for the Red Cross to pick up blood from blood drives and take it to designated Red Cross facilities or hospitals. He was ready to go on a day's notice and was awarded a distinguished volunteer award. Herb had an infectious positive attitude and a story or joke for most occasions. He had a gift for Scandinavian accents which enhanced his favorite joke about Swedes on a fishing expedition or the latest Ole and Lena joke. His height and presence made him hard to miss. When you met Herb Quade, you met somebody you'd not soon forget. A memorial service will be held at a later date. The Quade family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Commonwealth Senior Living at the Ballentine and to Trinity Hospice for their care and affection, especially during the last weeks of his declining health. The staff's kind and gentle ministrations during this difficult time made him as comfortable as could be and he appreciated it.Show more

Derrick Ryals Sr

Derrick G. Ryals, Sr. , 61, passed away Monday, November 20th, 2023 in Virginia Beach, Virginia. He was born April 21st, 1962 to Elsie Ryals and John Nelson in Bronx, New York. Shortly after graduating from William Howard Taft High School in New York, he would begin his career in the Navy where he would eventually meet the love of his life, Theresa Walker, and bring to the world his two sons Derrick Jr. and Justin. In 2004, he would be honorably discharged after serving almost 24 years to his country. Still willing to serve, Derrick would dedicate an additional 12 years to the Virginia Beach Sheriff's Office and the citizens of Virginia Beach. Derrick was a remarkable husband and father. Family meant a lot to him. He was a challenging chess player, he loved art, and was an avid fan of boxing as well as the New York Giants. In fact, it was extremely rare you would be able to spot him out in public not representing their team colors of red, white, and blue. Derrick is survived by his wife Theresa; two sons Derrick Jr. and Justin; two grandsons Abraham and Asaph; and siblings Walter Jr. , Sabrina, Elvira, Warner, and Todd. Derrick was predeceased by his mother Elsie; his father John; and brother Rex. On Thursday, November 30, 2023, Geraldine Ann Creech was welcomed into Heaven with open arms by her personal Lord and Savior, her sister, Nancy, and many other cherished friends and family. In the book The Tipping Point, author Malcolm Gladwell talks about three archetypes of people: mavens, salespeople, and connectors. Mom was a connector in every sense of the word, a person who "links us up with the world. . . a person with a special gift for bringing the world together". She was curious, self-confident, sociable, energetic and joyful. Her most extraordinary gift, however, was that she did not know a stranger. Perhaps that explains why she was able to foster hundreds of authentic and personal relationships throughout her lifetime. One might think Gerry had many interests. . . bowling, golf, coaching, Nascar racing, camping, dancing, travel, karaoke. She certainly did enjoy and was actively involved in all of those, some for which she held leadership and/or volunteer positions, everything from President to Clean Up Committee. But the truth is, Gerry was much more interested and invested in the friendships and connections she made with the people she met along the way. Mom LOVED helping others! She was asked to co-coach a softball team for the Azalea Little League, which she gladly accepted even though she had never coached a team sport, other than refereeing spats between her two rambunctious children. On and off the field, she was one of the best coaches in the league, worshipped by her little Cupcakes and Ladybugs and their families. She recently told me she regretted not having taken better care to preserve a signed softball by one of her teams, as some of the names had started to fade. Gerry LOVED to dance! She was a member of the Virginia Beach Shag Club for decades and was deservedly inducted into the Shagger's Hall of Fame. And Gerry LOVED to sing! One of her favorite pastimes was performing at her favorite karaoke venues. Without a doubt, she was Geraldine the Karaoke Queen singing her beloved Patsy Cline numbers and other country classics. The family was overjoyed to have just recently celebrated Gerry's 80th birthday. Mom was so delighted to spend this momentous occasion with her sister, Marie, with whom she shared a very special relationship and a crowd of other family members whom she loved with her whole heart. For Mom, nothing compared to spending time with her family. She especially adored her six grandchildren, endlessly showering them with praise and support. She was so proud of them all. Gerry was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, GiGi, and treasured friend. She continually expressed her gratefulness for those relationships and bonds, sharing how blessed she felt. Her words of wisdom and selfless acts of nurturing love will be cherished forever. The family would like to extend a special "Thanks" to Terry for her volunteer work with the Alzheimer's Association in honor of her Aunt. A visitation will be held at Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home on Sunday, December 10 from 5-8pm. A Funeral Service will be held at Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home on Monday, December 11 at 10am, with Burial to follow at Rosewood Memorial Park.
