Edward Gant

Age - 93

December 4, 2023

Reverend Edward P. Gant, 93, passed into the arms of his Lord and Savior on November 29, 2023, in Lynchburg, Virginia. Ed was born on July 23, 1930, in Newell, West Virginia. He was the only child of Pearl Gant and Goldie Gant. He is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, Louise Gant and their three children; Doug (Liz) Gant, Debbie (Barry) Schmitt, and Libby (Tim) Roberts. He is also survived by his 7 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild; Alexandra Schmitt (Ben) Norwood, Caitlin Roberts, Jonathan Schmitt, Christopher Schmitt, Anne Gant, Camden Roberts, Grayson Roberts, and Charlotte Norwood. As a young man, Ed felt a strong call to Christian ministry and began pastoring a small church in the mid-1950s. During this time, Ed attended a Church of the Nazarene delegate event in Huntington, West Virginia, where he met Louise Clark. They spoke briefly and saw each other one other time before he volunteered to serve in the United States Army - accepting what he believed was his responsibility. Ed served in the Army in Germany from 1955-1957. He returned home in August of 1957 when he met Louise again. They were soon married on January 4, 1958 in Moundsville, West Virginia. His call to ministry would lead him and Louise to spend their lives in service to the Lord, and to the communities in which they lived. First, serving small churches in West Virginia, and then serving for 39 years as a minister in the Virginia United Methodist Conference for churches across the state. In addition to pastoring churches, Ed was involved with Industrial Commercial Ministries (ICM) where he spent time in the field riding with officers of the Fairfax & Danville Police Departments. He also served as a member and Chaplain of the Virginia Defense Force. When Ed retired from full time ministry in 1995, he and Louise settled in Lynchburg, Virginia and became active members of Heritage United Methodist Church where they would continue to serve their church and support other local churches when needed. Over the years, Ed's engagement in the communities he served outside of the church, included being part of the local Masonic Lodge and membership in both the Scottish Rite and Shrine Club. His interests also included all things photography. Ed loved taking pictures and as technology evolved, he was always excited to embrace new ways to capture special moments, the images of the people he loved, and the places he visited. Ed and Louise led an active life together loving their children, grandchildren, and their many church families. He was privileged to officiate many weddings and baptisms over the years, but it was his special joy to be able to officiate the weddings of his three children, baptize his seven grandchildren, and most recently officiate the wedding of his granddaughter, Alexandra. Ed had a true servant's heart and was devoted in his service to the Lord and to sharing the gospel. He genuinely loved those he ministered to, was willing to see the good in people, and was never hesitant to share his time or pray with them. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p. m. on Thursday, January 4, 2024 at Heritage United Methodist Church. The internment will be private for his family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either Shriners Hospitals for Children and/or Heritage United Methodist Church Lynchburg Virginia. William "Larry" Vickery, age 84, originally of Proctor, NC passed away November 29, 2023, of complications from COPD. He was preceded in death, he would tell you, by pretty much everyone he ever knew and loved. However, he is survived by his daughters, Michelle Williams and Nicole Plucker; his grandchildren Joseph & Elizabeth Plucker and Sierra Williams; a niece, Fran Hicks; a great-nephew, Chris Angel; some lifelong friends, Daniel Culbreth and JT Russel III; and other nieces and nephews. Diddy / Pa / Unca Larry could be a real charmer, particularly if you were female. I know several older ladies who thought he was just as sweet as could be and I don't know how many young waitresses he tried to help through school. He had a sense of humor and an appreciation for others with a sense of humor. He was a staunch believer in conservative values. He taught his daughters to work hard and take responsibility for their own lives and that a good education, which you could get by reading, could make up for a lot. (He also sent us to some really good schools. ) He told us often that he loved us and that he was proud of us. And, for all these things, we are forever grateful. A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a. m. , Friday, December 8, 2023 at Lauada Cemetery on Lauada Cemetery Road in Bryson City, NC 28713 by Pastor Jason Marlowe. In lieu of flowers, he would tell you to just keep your money. Heritage Funeral Service and Crematory 427 Graves Mill Road Lynchburg, VA (434) 239-2405 is assisting the family. Carolyn Crist

Carolyn Crist

Age - 75

December 2, 2023

1948 - 2023 Carolyn Powell Crist - beloved wife, mom and grandma - went home to be with her Lord on Wednesday, November 29 at the age of 75 in Lynchburg, VA. Born in Amherst County, she grew up at 104 Main Street in Madison Heights, as an only child to Mr. Robert Lee and Claudine Johnson Powell. Important to Carolyn was the fact her grandmother, "Granny," lived with her and her parents. Also, it was in that neighborhood where Carolyn met her first boyfriend (and one day future husband), Mike Crist. They dated for most of high school until she graduated from Amherst County High in 1966. After a courtship during Mike's tour in the Navy, she married at the age of 20, bought their first home on Leesville Road and went to work for HK Porter. Carolyn was good with numbers and people - she understood both very well. These skills took her through other career stops at Gould Battery and SunTrust Bank, but her greatest accomplishment, as she would often say, was being a mom to two twin boys, Steve and Greg. No doubt, being a full-time mom and employee is difficult, but she accomplished both with poise, presence, and personality. Some of Carolyn's most favorite things in life: her Schnauzer puppy, sunbathing, holiday home decorating, big-hoop earrings, a signature corn pudding dish, and spoiling her grandkids with ice cream for breakfast. Carolyn is preceded in death by her parents and grandmother. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Mike Crist; her sons Steve and Greg; her daughter-in-law, Joanna; and her four grandchildren, Madelyn, Abbey, Reid and Samantha. We thank our heavenly Father for the life of Carolyn Crist. She was an amazing wife, a doting mom/ grandma/mother-in-law, and a true friend. Our hearts are broken with her gone, and yet we trust in the promise of John 14:3: ". . . I go and prepare a place for you. . . so that where I am, there you may be also. " The family will receive friends and family for visitation on Monday, December 4 from 5:30-7:00 pm at Diuguid Funeral Home, 21914 Timberlake Rd in Lynchburg, VA. The memorial service will take place on Tuesday, December 5 , at 1pm at the same Diuguid location, followed by a graveside burial at Virginia Memorial Park at 11490 Forest Rd in Forest.Show more

He loved taking his Harley out for a cruise. And throwing a few discs now and then. He loved crocs, converted many anti-croc friends. He owned at least 5 pairs and was always on the look out for more. He was fixing up an old house he found, "The Outhouse" as he named it.
