Marlene Goodman Johnson, born on May 22, 1933, to the late Allie and Jeanette Bare Johnson, passed away on Saturday, October 7, 2023 at Allaghany Memorial Hospital She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one grandson and two sisters Marlene found immense joy in the simple pleasures of life, most notably in her passion for flower gardening Her green thumb and love for nurturing blooming beauty brought color and life to her world Marlene cherished spending time with her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren, relishing every moment spent in their company The bonds she shared with them were a source of immense pride and happiness One of Marlene's greatest joys was cooking for her family Marlene and her husband were steadfast supporters of their church community throughout their lives In Ashe County, they faithfully attended Mount Jefferson Baptist Church, where they found solace and strength in their shared faith Following his death, she continued their journey of spiritual growth and fellowship at First Baptist Church of Galax, Virginia The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Commonwealth Assisted Living of Hillsville and Blue Ridge Home Health Care of Galax for their exceptional care of Marlene during her final years Their compassion and dedication eased her journey and provided comfort to her and her loved ones Mrs Johnson is survived by: three daughters, Fleeta Farmer of Galax, VA, Macklene Whitby of Preston, MD, Kathy Bonificano of Newark, DE, two sisters, Goldie Antione of West Jefferson, Pauline Taylor of Jefferson, four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive Per Marlene's request no services will be held

Joshua Isaiah Latham, a beloved son, brother and friend who brought immense joy to all who knew him, passed away on Wednesday, November 29, 2023. Although he was just 18 years old, he had already carved out a niche for himself as someone with a magnetic personality and a love for various activities. Born in Wilkes County, North Carolina on July 28, 2005, Josh lived a life that was as colorful as the many passions he held dear. He was a young man brimming with energy, enthusiasm, and an infectious love for life. Josh was preceded in death by his great-grandfather, Walter Latham, great-grandmothers, Betty Jones and Kathy Ridenhour, uncle, Stevie Roark and cousin, Cody Keen. Josh could find happiness in the simplest pleasures and shared it generously with everyone around him. Josh had a passion for shooting guns, finding excitement in the precision and skill required. His enthusiasm extended to the virtual realm, where he found enjoyment in gaming, particularly the popular game, Fortnite. Whether in the real world or the digital one, Josh was always up for an adventure. An outdoors enthusiast, Josh loved spending time in nature, whether it was a day at the beach or a casual ride on the golf cart. His free spirit and love for the simple pleasures in life made every moment with him memorable. Music was another one of Josh's great loves. He knew so many songs and had the ability to sing anything that would come on the radio. Known for his talent for making everyone laugh, Josh's humor could brighten even the darkest of days. His comedic genius knew no bounds; from his hilarious antics, funny faces, to his knack for inventing jokes and playfully mixing up words, he effortlessly lifted the spirits of everyone in his presence. Josh is survived by his parents, Joshua Allen and Kacey Noelle Latham. In addition to his parents, Josh leaves behind his brothers Austin Latham (Chloe), Landon Easter, and Jackson Latham, as well as his sisters Alyssa Latham and Kloey Easter, paternal grandparents, Ronnie (Angela) Latham and Lucille Latham, maternal grandparents, Marty and Debbie Cook, paternal great-grandmother, Mattie Latham, maternal great-grandparents, Jesse Jones and Roger Cook (Betty). He is also survived by a wide circle of family members, including several aunts, uncles, and cousins who will miss him dearly. Celebration of Life Services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, December 2, 2023 at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel by Rev. Eddie Bobbit. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens with committal officiated by Rev. Brian Cardwell. The family will receive friends from 10: 00 am to 11:00 am on Saturday prior to the funeral service. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a sister, Ocie Price, brother, Sidney Price, son, James Greer and husband, Minister Leonard J. Blevins. Her active involvement with the Ashe County Women's Club and Homemakers Club showcased Merita's commitment to fostering connections and supporting the well-being of her neighbors. An advocate for Celebrate Recovery, she lent her strength to those navigating the challenging path to recovery, providing a source of inspiration and encouragement. Grounded in her faith, Merita found solace and purpose in singing hymns alongside her late husband and fellow congregants in various churches. As a cherished member of Open Arms Fellowship, she exemplified the values of love, and community. Merita's defining trait was her selflessness. Always extending a helping hand to those in need, she prioritized the welfare of others above her own. Her caring nature went beyond words, as she consistently devoted herself to the well-being of those around her. A proud mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Merita found her greatest pride in the bonds of family. As a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Michelle found fulfillment in caring for others. Dean was born on August 2, 1956 in Ashe County, North Carolina to the late Robert Glen and Virginia Blanche Combs Shaw. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his son, Michael Dean Shaw and two sisters, Darlene and Dee Dee Shaw. Dean's commitment to his faith was unparalleled. His passion for ministry was evident in every sermon, every act of kindness, and every moment he spent guiding and supporting his congregation. His unwavering devotion to the Lord was matched only by his profound love for his family. Dean and his beloved wife, Cathy, recently celebrated their golden 50th wedding anniversary, a testament to their enduring love and partnership through life's joys and challenges. Within his family and church, Dean was a pillar of strength and compassion. He also had a special bond with his cousin Mark Medley. Their friendship spanned over many years, spending countless hours working together and enjoying life. As we mourn the loss of a beloved husband, father, devoted minister, and cherished friend, let us also celebrate the incredible life and legacy of Pastor Dean Shaw. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by, her brother, John Frasca and her husband, Edward Thomas Mongiove. Donna was a woman of unwavering faith, finding solace and joy in her spiritual journey. She cherished her time at church, where she not only attended faithfully but also engaged in the profound practice of reading her Bible. Donna was a dedicated member of Appalachian Church, where she found a community that enriched her life and strengthened her faith. Her love for music was evident in her passion for singing and her enjoyment of the Golden Oldies. The melodies of bygone eras brought her immense happiness, creating a soundtrack to her life that resonated with the warmth of nostalgia. Donna had a nack for word search puzzles, showcasing her sharp mind and love for intellectual challenges. In quieter moments, she found comfort in the thrill of horror movies, immersing herself in the suspenseful narratives that captivated her imagination. Above all, Donna was a devoted and loving mother and wife, pouring her heart into nurturing her family.
