Mark E Hoffert, 62, died on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, peacefully at his home after a battle with pancreatic cancer A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p m , Tuesday, October 10, at the Newton Church of the Way The family will greet friends from 5-7 p m , Monday, October 9, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory In lieu of flowers, memorials in Mark's name (checks made payable to Susan Hoffert), to be used for a project at a later date, may be left at the church the day of the service or at the funeral home Mark, the son of Carl and Betty (Main) Hoffert, was born on October 13, 1960 in Newton He graduated from Newton High School in 1979 and began working at the Maytag Company in 1980 On February 28, 1980, Mark was united in marriage with Susan Dannen in Rising Sun, Iowa In 1990, he entered Maytag's Skilled Trade Apprenticeship program and earned his Journeyman of Machine Repair and Maintenance card He kept machines running for the Maytag Company and later Whirlpool until his retirement in 2020 A member of UAW Local 997, Mark performed the duties of Shop Steward and of Plant Maintenance Representative during contract negotiations An active member of the Newton Church of the Way, he acted as Deacon and volunteer Mark believed using the skills God gave him to help others was his mission in life A friend reminded us of the belt buckle Mark once wore: "Master Mechanic - Fixer of All," saying this described The Master's life perfectly Mark enjoyed life going 100 miles an hour, with his after-burners lit aflame From the vast information he knew, to how fast he worked, friends remember with a call, Mark coming to the rescue to get them picked up, fixed up, pulled out, dug out, plowed out, helped out, or jump-started and on the road again As a family, we will miss his dependable presence His rescues and devotion made the people he encountered feel special Mark's legacy of giving of himself will be carried on through his wife and best friend, Susan Hoffert of Newton; his children, Sabrina and Scott Smead and Samantha Jutting of Newton; his grandchildren, Karter, Gavin, Luke, and Max Smead, Landon Klosterboer, and Liberty Jutting; his brothers, Marty and Rae Ann Hoffert of Newton, Jon and Kristy Hoffert of Ankeny; his siblings-in-law, Andy and Terry Dannen of Newton, Judy and Eric Balbiani of Kelley, Iowa; and his many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends Mark was preceded in death by his parents; and Susan's parents, Glenn and Mary Ann Dannen

Kay Geddes Matson entered into the presence of her Savior November 26 after courageously battling cancer for thirteen months. Born to John and Ellen (Crabtree) Geddes on March 7, 1957 in Des Moines, Iowa, Kay grew up the middle of three girls on their family's farm in rural NE Polk county. Her passion for cultivating the land and love for family was evident at an early age and was a theme throughout her life. Kay placed her trust in Jesus as her Savior at a young age and grew in her faith and relationship with Christ and her life's work and passions were fueled by her faith. After teaching for a few years at Pioneer Christian School in Bassett, NE, Kay was united in marriage to Larry Matson on June 6, 1982 in Altoona, IA. After helping Larry through seminary training in Greenville, SC, they started in full time ministry at Berean Baptist Church in Florissant, CO. While Kay was heavily involved in the ministries of the church and community service, her greatest joy was rearing and teaching her four children. Kay homeschooled all of her children from Kindergarten to high school graduation and continued to love teaching in multitude of ways after her children were all grown. Kay was preceded in death by her mother and father and infant sister Lois Elizabeth. Those left to remember and celebrate Kay's life include: her husband, Larry; children, Laura (Pieter) Jacobs, Julia (TJ) Lyttle, Krista (Josh) Robinson, Adam (Olivia) Matson; sisters, Mary (Sam) Gosuk, and Carolyn (Gary) Fray; 10 grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear family members and sweet friends. Funeral service will be held Friday, December 1, 2023 at the Altoona Regular Baptist Church. The family will greet friends from 9:30 am until 10:30 am Friday at the church. Barbara Ann De Meyer or "Grandma B. " as she was affectionately known to her grandchildren passed from this life on Sunday, November 19. Barb was born to Tom and Marietta Fairfield on February 18, 1948 in Dubuque, Iowa. After completing her radiology training at Xavier, she made the move to Newton, Iowa to accept a job in radiology at SKIFF Medical Center. It was during her time at SKIFF that Barb met the friends that became her family. Barb took pride in her job at SKIFF and remained there until her retirement. Barb was a crafter and a consummate baker. Her love language was food and she firmly believed that there were not too many things a homemade sweet treat or hearty meal would not cure. Afterall, a chocolate chip cookie has "some butter and that's dairy, chocolate is a good antioxidant and the eggs add protein. " She delighted in trading culinary secrets and finding new ways to spice up old favorites. Barb was preceded in death by her son Jon. Left to honor Barb's memory are her son Phil (Cindi) De Meyer; three grandchildren Jack, Bryan and Madelline; sister Sharon (Paul) Stephany; brother Tom (Darcey) Fairfield; her nephews, Chris and Shawn as well as a host of friends that held a very special place in her heart. Family will be greeting friends from 2:00 to 4:00 p. m. , Sunday, November 26, 2023, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Newton. Patsy D. was the daughter of William P. and Hazel L. Johnston. Born 12. 15. 1946 in Colby, Kansas. She was later adopted by her step-father, Edward C. Sochor, after they moved to New York. In 1964, Patsy graduated from Newfield High School in Selden, NY. In December 1967, she married Carl W. Jones. Together, they raised 3 children, Penny, Pamala and Jason. In 1975, family moved to Mississippi, where she loved being a Girl Scout Leader, became an EMT, and loved the animal rescue league. In 1987, family moved to Newton, Iowa, where, in Feb 1994, she married Charles (Chuck) Hanson and together they adopted a son, Donald. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, and her great granddaughter. She was a friend to everyone she met. Didn't matter if she had just met you or had known you forever, she treated everyone the same. Those left to honor her memory, her husband, Charles (Chuck). Her 2 Daughters, Penny (Roger)Stevens of Hazleton, IA. Pamala Squier of Georgetown, IN. Her 2 Sons, Jason (Kellie) Jones, of Wanamingo, MN, and Donald Hanson of Grinnell, IA. Her 8 grandchildren, Amanda (Scott) Pender of Newton, IA, Brian Stevens of Roland, IA, Christopher Squier and Madison Squier of Georgetown, IN, Marvin Jones, Mark Jones and Marshall Jones of Wanamingo, MN, Martin Jones of Los Angeles, CA. And her Great-Granddaughter Emma of Newton. Her sister Suzi Boyle of Brighton, CO. and many people that knew and loved Patsy. Marilyn Langmaid, 86, of Newton, Iowa passed away on Friday, November 17, 2023, at Mery One Hospital in Newton. Per her wishes no services will be held. A private family burial in Union Cemetery will be held at a later date. Marilyn was born on May 31, 1937, to Hubert and Dorothy (Gray) Dorothy in rural Newton. Her family relocated to California but eventually returned to Newton where she graduated from Newton High School with the class of 1954. Marilyn began working at the Jasper County Savings Bank. She married the love of her life Don "Bud" Langmaid Jr. in Kellogg on December 1, 1956. The couple lived on the farm north of Newton. Marilyn was an excellent mother and farm wife. After the kids were raised, she returned to the workforce and worked as a para pro at Emerson Hough School. Marilyn also worked at Big Bear. She was a member of the Wittemberg Church, Wittemberg Grange, Mother's Club, and the United Methodist Church in Newton. Marilyn loved spending time with her family, most especially her grandchildren. She loved to take them camping. She also enjoyed collecting coupons, writing to her pen pals, bus trips with Bud, and camping. Those left to cherish her loving memory are her husband of 66 years Bud Langmaid; children Kirk (Theresa) Langmaid, Kelvin (Genevieve) Langmaid, and Kent (Teri) Langmaid; grandchildren Meegan Langmaid-Keller, Ryan (Dawn) Langmaid, Ross (Amber) Langmaid, Tina (Dustin) Langmaid, Grant (Sammi) Langmaid, Jessica Langmaid, Nicole (Mark Neyens) Langmaid and Kayla (Adam) Singletary; 22 great and great-great grandchildren; and sister-in law Sandra Warden. Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Rita Layton and Sheryl O'Malley; and brother Steve Dorothy. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family, which will be directed towards Wittemberg Church Historical Society and Jasper Co. Historical Museum. Freda Marie Young, 89, the daughter of Orville and Opal (Porter) Swarts, was born December 1, 1933, near Udell, Iowa. She was a graduate of Seymour Senior High School, Class of 1951. On July 20, 1952, Freda was united in marriage to Sandy A. Young at the Mystic, Iowa Methodist Church. She had been employed by the telephone office as an operator. She enjoyed sharing her home life with Sandy and her family, and loved babysitting, for 30 plus years. She also enjoyed quilting, crocheting doilies and her plants, indoors and out. She loved her dogs. Her business for 30 years was to buy, fix up older homes, and rent and sell them. She was a member of the Metz Community Church in rural Newton. Freda passed from this life on Monday morning, November 13, 2023, at her home in Newton. She was preceded in death by her parents, her in-laws, George and Kate Young, her son, Richard Young; daughter-in-law, Myrna Young, brother & sister-in-law, Kermit & Colleen Swarts and sisters & brothers-in-law, Pauline & Kenneth Coulson, Garnet & Gilbert Jay, Norma & Don Marshall, Velma & Arthur Davis. She was also preceded in death by sister-in-law & brothers-in-law, Margaret & Ray Stickler, John Young and Bill Young. Those left to honor the memory of Freda include her husband, Sandy; her children: Robert (Syl) Young, Randall Young, Renee (Craig) Hadsall and daughter-in-law, Brenda Young. She is also survived by her two sisters-in-law Donna Young and Janet Young, her many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and her many extended family and friends. A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:30 a. m. , Monday, November 20, 2023, at the Pence~Reese Funeral Home in Newton. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left to Freda's family, Metz Church or a charity of your choosing. The burial will be in the Newton Memorial Park Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held from 5-7 p. m. , Tuesday, November 21, 2023, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Newton, with a time of sharing memories beginning at 6:30 p. m. Memorials in Roger's name (please make checks payable to Mari Hamersley) can be left at the funeral home. Roger, the son of Merle and Betty (Pilcher) Hamersley, was born June 13, 1952, in Ottumwa. He grew up between Ottumwa and Kennewick, Washington until his family moved to Newton in 1969, when Roger was a junior in high school. Roger graduated from Newton High School in 1951. He later received a degree in electronics from the National Education Center in Des Moines. Roger was united in marriage with Mari Sue Gooding on April 30, 1976, at St. Luke United Methodist Church in Newton. He had worked at Newton Concrete and Asphalt and later worked at Forbes Office Solutions doing machine repairs. Roger most recently had been employed at Des Moines Asphalt for 25 years doing plant maintenance. Roger's passion in life was RC cars. From the time he discovered them at age 12, he built and collected numerous cars. He also maintained an RC track at Hobby Haven in Des Moines, where he organized and ran several races through the years. Roger was a jack of all trades and was able to fix anything. He enjoyed bluegrass music, cooking, and Friday night dates for dinner and a movie. He was always up for a road trip and doted on the family's pets over the years. Roger was a hard worker and a loyal friend, always willing to lend a hand to anyone he knew. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who loved life. Roger is survived by his wife, Mari Hamersley of Newton; his daughter, Kira Shepherd of Newton; granddaughter, Delaney Shepherd of Newton; mother-in-law, Ramona Osborn of Newton; his best friend since age 17, Ed Harl and his sons, Vincent and Matt Harl; and A. J. Failor, who was like a son to Roger. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Steve Hamersley.
