| | Mark Richard Gearhart was born on October 6, 1966 in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. He was one of five children born to Harvey R. and Margaret "Margie" Rose (O'Driscoll) Gearhart. Mark attended South Holt High School. Mark was a truck driver, and was currently working for the Aaron Luce Farm Company. Mark passed away on Friday, September 8, 2023 at his Oregon, Missouri home at the age of 56. Preceding him in death was his father, Harvey; maternal grandparents Howard and Marguerite O'Driscoll; and his siblings, Michael Gearhart, Howard "Buck" Gearhart, Kim Hiltner and Denise Gearhart. Surviving is his mother. Services are pending.

| | Peggy L. (Sipes) Whipple, 91, entered Heavens Gates on November 23, 2023 following a brief stay at The Woodlands Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Texas. Born April 15, 1932 and raised in Oregon, Missouri, she was the daughter of Frank and Lulu (Huiatt) Sipes. Peggy was a committed Christian and active in the Southern Baptist Church, and a loving wife and mother. As a young lady Peggy worked in the Oregon telephone office with her mother. Peggy then taught multiple grades in a country one-room school. After caring for a student with epilepsy she became interested in in nursing. She graduated in 1955 from Missouri Methodist Hospital in St Joseph as a Registered Nurse. After a meaningful career she retired as a head nurse in surgery at Methodist Hospital in Lubbock, Texas. On April 30, 1955 Peggy married Robert H. "Bob" Whipple of Forest City. Bob preceded her into eternity and promised to "meet her at Heaven's Gates and carry her in. " Also preceding her in death were her brother Jerry Sipes, and her sister Marianne Anderson. She is survived by their three children, Judy (Mark) Reynolds, and twins Tom (Mary) Whipple, and Tim (JoAnne) Whipple; six grandchildren, Joe Reynolds, Chris (Davida) Reynolds, Jennifer Whipple, Kirk Whipple, Kylee Whipple, and Ryan Whipple; two great grandchildren, Autumn Reynolds and Benjamin Reynolds; and her brother, Dr. Larry (Nancy) Sipes. | | Janice Long was born on September 3, 1946 to Walter and Lylas Hamilton. She graduated from Ritenour High School in St. Louis, and then worked until she enrolled in Central Missouri State College in Warrensburg. It was there that she met John Long. They were married on March 25, 1967, and became parents of two daughters. Jan later returned to school and graduated from Northwest Missouri State University in 1999. Jan was a rural housewife, cooking and bringing food to the field and working on their Mound City farm. She volunteered at the United Methodist Church and at the Mound City school where her daughters attended. She was an Avon district manager for four years. Jan was a head daycare teacher in St. Louis for two years, and a head daycare teacher at La Petite in St. Joseph. She later worked at Mound City Thriftway for 11 years. She was currently working at Amazonia Elementary School as a paraprofessional. She enjoyed spending time with her family and her dog, shopping, decorating her home, and helping her daughters decorate theirs. She enjoyed vacations with her close friends and family. Jan enjoyed the annual Christmas shopping trip with her daughters and grandchildren, family games of BINGO, and celebrating birthdays with her family. When she was younger she enjoyed playing cards. Jan also enjoyed working outside in her yard. She was loved by her Savannah co-workers and the children she taught. Jan enjoyed dancing and spending time with her friends at The Klub. Preceding her in death were her parents. Survivors include her children, Jennifer (Brian) Kelly of Rock Port and Mandy (Jacob) Crider of Mound City; brothers, Jerry (Carolyn) Hamilton of Athens, Texas, and Greg (Linda) Hamilton of Wright City, Missouri; grandchildren, Lauren, Brecken, and Landrey Kelly, Emma Long and Maycee Crider; and numerous nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews. A family gathering will be held from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Monday, October 30, 2023 at Chamberlain Funeral Home in Mound City. Memorials may be directed to Amazonia Elementary School.Show more

Mary E. Recob, 85, of Elwood, Kansas passed away Monday, October 9, 2023, at the Oregon Care Center, Oregon, Missouri. Mary was born on April 14, 1938, in St. Joseph, Missouri to Louis C. and Margaret V. (Marales) Nichols. She was of the Christian Faith and a member of the Red Hats. Mary was a cook for over 30 years for USD #406 in Wathena, after retiring she volunteered for the Second Harvest Food Bank. Mary loved spending time with family, camping at the river, and gardening were her passions. She loved ice skating for most all her life and loved celebrating Halloween and the fall season. Mary married Clifford L. Recob on September 21, 1957, in St. Joseph, Missouri. He preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her parents, son, Michael S. Recob, an infant brother, Daniel and a sister Charlene Wendt. Survivors, her children, Christopher L. Recob (Angie), Wathena, Kansas. Anthony L. Recob (Maggie), Maysville, North Carolina. Gale A. | | James F. "Jim" Broker was born June 15, 1939 in Oregon, Missouri, and graduated from Mound City High School in 1958. On September 2, 1958 Jim married Mary Jane Dwyre. To this union two daughters were born. Jim worked construction early in their marriage. In July 1965 he began working for the CB&Q Railroad as a telegraph operator. The CB&Q merged with Burlington Northern Railroad and Jim worked as a railroad agent until his retirement in 1988. After retirement he worked for the local Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge (now Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge) near Mound City at the front desk, and assisted the refuge naturalist and park ranger in teaching young people about wildlife, the environment and refuge management. Jim worked as a deputy marshall for the Mound City police department from 1965 to 1970. This inspired his creation of a digital book published in 2014 called, "The Last Marshall. " Jim and Mary also owned and operated a real estate agency in Mound City in the 1980's. Over the years Jim wrote and published "Evening Light," a Christian newsletter. He also wrote articles for the St. Joseph News Press and for various magazines. While living in Union, Mississippi in 2001 and 2002 he wrote and edited a weekly column for the Union Appeal newspaper. Jim also had a photography studio in Forest City in the 1970's. Most important to Jim was the work of the Lord. He served as pastor at Benton Church in Forest City and later in Gentryville, Missouri, Urich, Missouri, and then Union, Mississippi. He held various revivals all over many states. Jim felt most called as an evangelist. He traveled through Mexico, Belize, and British Honduras on foot with good friend and fellow minister James Huskey. Jim later traveled to Hawaii, Australia, and New Zealand in the late 1980's spreading the word of God. Jim faithfully read his Bible every night from a young age due to the influence of his grandparents Ezra and Ida Martin, whom he lived with during his formative years. Jim and Mary celebrated 60 years of marriage before Mary passed away on February 18, 2019. Jim passed away on Sunday, August 27, 2023 at a St. Joseph, Missouri care center. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother. Survivors include his daughters, Catherine Elizabeth Younger of Mound City, Missouri and Mary Ann (Gus) Pardo of Big Lake Village; four grandchildren, Joshua (Sirena) Younger, Katie Leach, Jason (Falisha) Leach, and Austin Leach; six great grandchildren; three brothers and two sisters. Jim and Mary's biggest request was for all the family to make Heaven their home. He will be sadly missed by family and friends.
