Marilyn J. Rivers passed away on Monday October 2, 2023 at the age of 72. She was surrounded by her family, in her home. Originally from Rocky Hill, Marilyn made Tolland her home for the past 37 years. She is predeceased by her parents, Charles and Kathryn (Roehm) Weldon. Marilyn loved her family deeply and was the glue that held everyone together. She is survived by her loving husband, John Rivers. They met in 1978 working in the wire and cable industry. Though married for almost 41 years, she always joked he "had potential. " Marilyn also leaves behind her daughter Amanda Rivers, her daughter Alison Rivers and son-in-law Jerrard Palamara, and her cherished 4 year-old granddaughter Lucia Palamara. Marilyn is survived by her four sisters: Charlotte Powell (Tom Powell), Norma Miller (Keith Miller), Laurie Weldon (Annie Johnson), and Carol Stacy (Michael Stacy). Marilyn also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends. Always a selfless caregiver, Marilyn ran her own home daycare for over a decade allowing her to be home with her daughters. She then returned to the wire and cable industry to work as a purchasing agent before retiring. She was a talented gardener and loved being outside watching birds. Marilyn loved reading and passed the joy of a good book and a cup of tea to her daughters. She went on almost daily walks around the neighborhood with her neighbor and friend, Emogene Cayward. Marilyn was a remarkably kind, generous person who was happiest with her family especially her dogs Misty, Amber, and Abbington. She filled every holiday, birthday party, special occasion, and even the average weekday with love and joy. We will always remember her love and the way she would light up when she was with her granddaughter. William Nelson "Bill" Butler, 81, of Farmington, beloved husband of 60 years to Penny Jane (Martin) Butler, passed away peacefully with his family by his side after a courageous battle with Leukemia on Tuesday, November 28, 2023. Bill was born on April 1, 1942, in Hartford, son to the late Edgar Buell Butler and Sarah (Taylor) Butler. Bill grew up in West Hartford and graduated from Conard High School. Following high school, he proudly served his country with the United States Army. During his time in the service, he was assigned to the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe and was stationed in Paris with the Dental Corp Unit. Penny joined him there while he finished his last year in the service. They then moved to Switzerland where they worked and attended college. Upon returning home to the United States, they settled in Boston whereupon Bill continued to work towards his business degree from Boston University. They later returned to West Hartford where he finished his degree from the University of Harford and shortly thereafter launched into a career that quickly turned entrepreneurial. He started with Butler Nursery and Garden Center in 1972 which he eventually sold in 1995 to focus on his blossomed landscape design and lawn and arboriculture business while growing his other businesses including Line Systems in Chicago, Butler Power and Rental, and Butler Construction (known today as BCI) which his son's presently run. Bill served on the Finance Advisory board for the Town of West Hartford and was elected president for three terms for the CT Landscape Contractors Association. Bill is also fondly remembered as a coach for the West Hartford Youth Hockey League. After retirement, he relocated to Farmington and became a volunteer fireman and EMT for the Oakland Garden Firehouse and served on the board as Commissioner of Fire and EMS services for the Town of Farmington which included five fire houses. Bill believed in the value of hard work and set the example for his five sons. He was so very proud of them and their achievements. He was a fun-loving Dad, providing a lot of adventures for his family. He loved his sports and was considered a natural athlete. Name the sport and Bill most likely played it, enjoyed it, and conquered it. Hockey was his passion. While in France he played with the Canadians of Europe and while in Switzerland, he helped to form a team in the town that competed in other mountainous villages. Anyone who knew Bill or even just met him, understood that he loved his home on Lake Memphremagog in Mansonville, Quebec. It was there that he shared his passion for outdoor adventures with his family and friends. In retirement, Bill developed many hobbies. He and Penny enjoyed a mini farm (Hay Penny Farm) with horses, chickens, and pets. He learned the art of beekeeping and produced delicious honey to share. Bill lived a rich and full life. His legacy of hard work, independence, and sense of fun will live on through his family and the many lives he touched. His infectious spirit and love for life will be deeply missed but never forgotten. Bill was predeceased by his parents; his beloved daughter-in-law and Bob's wife, Caroline Butler and his sister-in-law Suzy (Martin) Bronstein. Bill's family deeply appreciate and thank the doctors, nurses and staff at the UConn John Dempsey Medical Center Oncology Department for their loving care and compassion provided to him during his time of illness. Reverend Kathy Ann Faber, 61, of Somers, beloved wife for over 23 years of Reverend Wayne A. Strever, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 25, 2023, with Wayne and their loving daughter, Nancy Strever, at her side. Kathy was born and raised in Shelton, CT, one of three children of the late Emil and Nancy (Hamilton) Faber and was a graduate of Shelton High School. She earned her associates degree in recreation studies and bachelor's degree in sociology/human services from Eastern Connecticut State University, her master's degree in counseling from Southern Connecticut State University, and her master's degree in divinity from Yale University. Kathy began her career at the Lower Naugatuck Valley Mental Health Shelter, where she was a program director for six years and worked as a children's and victim's advocate and counselor. She then decided to pursue ministry to help people further. After receiving her M. Div. , she was ordained as a minister and served as pastor at Clinton Congregational Church in Clinton, MA, Second Congregational Church in Manchester, and later at Enfield Congregational Church. She was a dedicated, patient, and kind person. Her calling as a minister was very important to her and serving her congregation was a priority as well as being a loving and dedicated spouse and mother. Kathy, along with her family, loved traveling around the world, skiing, and spending time at the beach and the family pool. Kathy's greatest joy was her loving daughter, Nancy, whom she loved very deeply and cared about above all else. She was consistently supportive of Nancy throughout her life and made sure to attend every sports game, concert, and recital of her youth. In addition to her husband, Wayne, and loving daughter Nancy, Kathy leaves her two brothers, William Faber of Shelton and Glenn Faber of Raleigh, NC, and their families. Lynn (Calverley) Halligan, 74, of Vernon, CT, beloved wife of Thomas P. Halligan, Jr. , died peacefully on Wednesday, November 22, 2023, at Hartford Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. Lynn was born in Wolverhampton, England, daughter to the late Harold and Mavis (Jenkins) Calverley. Lynn immigrated to the U. S. and came over on the Queen Mary with her parents when she was eight years old. She grew up in Litchfield, CT on the White Flower Farm properties where her father and mother were employed. Lynn was a graduate of Wamogo Regional High School, and she went on to attend Southern Connecticut State University. Lynn met and married the love of her life, Thomas P. Halligan, Jr. , on February 26, 1971, and they began their life together in Manchester, CT, before moving to Vernon in 1974. Lynn was a stay-at-home mother who cherished raising her children. Lynn enjoyed gardening, flowers indoor and outdoor, and observing nature. She was an extremely talented artist who could sketch, paint watercolors, and acrylics. Later in life she began to create stained glass works of art. Her knitting and crocheting included blankets, sweaters, scarves, and dolls. She was an active member of the Vernon Senior Center, where she enjoyed activities, people, and teaching watercolor classes. Lynn was a beautiful, loving, caring, and sentimental woman who will be dearly missed. Her family was most important to her. Along with her husband Thomas of over 52 years, she leaves her children, Carolyn Halligan and her husband Christopher Collman of Enfield, Patrick T. Halligan and his wife Melissa of Ellington; her grandchildren, Emily Davis of Ellington, Nathan Davis of Ellington, Scott Halligan and his wife Adriana of Ellington, Ryan Halligan of Danielson, and Melora Halligan of Ellington; her great-granddaughter, Gracelyn Gilchrist of Ellington; and her siblings, David Calverley and his wife Kathy of Morris, Ann Audia and her husband Richard of Alfred, ME, and Martin Calverley and his wife Marci of Barton, VT. She also leaves her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Kathleen Halligan of Portland, Richard Halligan and his wife Gloria of Port Saint Lucie, FL, Clark Halligan and his partner Deb Byrd of Dalton, MA, Judith Sharp of Dalton, MA, and Philip Halligan of Fairfield and numerous nieces and nephews. On November 20 2023, the Rev. Richard Avery Watson, D. Min, of Bloomfield, CT, died in his home while surrounded by loved ones. One of eight children born to Arthur Avery and Helen Letts Watson of Wethersfield, CT, Dick loved to reminisce about his happy childhood. Many fellow WHS classmates were among his closest life-long friends. He was a proud graduate of Dartmouth College's class of 1959. He received a Master of Divinity from Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary, and a Doctor of Ministry from American University. A 20 year career as partner in the family insurance firm Arthur A Watson and Co ended when Dick was called to the ministry. The pursuit of this dream took him to India, where he briefly worked with Mother Theresa, and then to Mutare, Zimbabwe, where he and his wife Susan worked and served the community for 5 years. He was ordained there in 1988. Returning to the States, Dick served Episcopal parishes in New Hampshire, Ohio, and southern Virginia. Dick dedicated himself tirelessly to many projects and causes, with music front and center throughout. He founded and for many years led a popular youth musical group, Sing-Out Glastonbury. He co-founded the Glastonbury chapter of A Better Chance (an ABC House), which to this day provides the opportunity for a high quality education to underprivileged youths. Dick was very active in Earth Charter, an environmental organization, and ran a group called In Support of Democracy. His passion for the last decade was developing, clearing, and maintaining the beautiful trail system at Seabury, the community where he and Susan have lived for the last 14 years. Dick was predeceased by his stepson Joseph E. Lovejoy Jr. ; his brothers Bob, Gary, and Tom Watson; and his sisters Joyce Willsey, Eunice Crosen, and Betty Kottke. He is survived by his beloved wife of 37 years, Susan Lovejoy Watson; his children, Linda Moss, Allison Vail Fuller, Stuart, Tyler, and Jennifer Watson; his stepdaughter Clare Lovejoy Byrne; his grandchildren, Andrew and Timothy Watson, Michaela Byrne Soper, Olivia Byrne Kaneb, and Ian, Calvin and Avery Macdonald; his "baby" sister Judy Weiner; sisters-in-law Leslie St. Germain Watson and Wendy Scholes Watson; and numerous nieces and nephews. J. Linda (Johnson) Cutler, 71, of Vernon, beloved wife of Bruce R. Cutler died peacefully on Tuesday, November 21, 2023, at Manchester Memorial Hospital, surrounded by her family. Linda was born in Hartford, CT, on May 13, 1952, daughter to the late Helge and Edith (Olson) Johnson. She grew up in West Hartford and was a graduate of William H. Hall High School. Linda went on to graduate from Central Connecticut State University and later earned a master's degree in early elementary education. Linda met and married the love of her life, Bruce R. Cutler on May 24, 1975. They began their life together. Living in Vernon and then moving to South Windsor and then back to Vernon. She worked for the Hartford Board of Education for her entire career. First in the parochial schools and later as a kindergarten and first grade teacher. Linda taught most of her years at the West Middle Elementary School and ended her career as a Reading Literacy Coach. Linda and Bruce enjoyed many years of marriage. They were adventurous and enjoyed skiing, motorcycle riding, kayaking, and exploring new places. She enjoyed the beach and spending family vacations in Cape Cod. Linda was an avid reader and enjoyed a good book on the beach. Linda was an active member of Emanuel Lutheran Church in Hartford. She was a part of the Green Team, sang in the choir, and led the book club. Linda was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend to many. She will be remembered for her supportive encouraging nature, and warm heart. Along with her husband of over 48 years, Bruce, she leaves her daughters, Elizabeth A. (Cutler) Cummings and her husband Rory of Glastonbury, and Julia L. Cutler and her husband Saif Haddad of Flemington, NJ; her grandson, Oliver Cummings of Glastonbury; her brother, Bertil Johnson and his wife Marsha of Myrtle Beach, SC; her sister-in-law, Karen Sheridan and her husband Thomas of Vernon; and her cousin whom she considered a sister, Shirley Leich of South Windsor. She was predeceased by her brother, Erling Johnson. Carmella Josephine (DiBella) Fecso, 88, of Windsor Locks, formerly of Ellington, beloved wife of the late Eugene "Gene" Fecso, passed away peacefully, on Wednesday, November 15, 2023. Carmella was born on April 23, 1935, in Luzerne, Pennsylvania, one of four children of the late Salvatore and Catina DiBella. Prior to her retirement, Carmella was employed in the Catalog Call Center for JC Penny for many years. She also worked as a librarian at Rockville Library. She attended St. Luke Church in Ellington and St. Bernard Church in Vernon. Carmella enjoyed working in her flower and vegetable gardens, watching the Red Sox and the UConn Woman's Basketball teams, but her passion was in baking! She was a member of The Red Hat Society and the Ladies Guild of St. Bernard. Earlier, she was the President of the St. Luke's Ladies Guild and a member of the Women's Junior League. In addition, Carmella loved bowling on a league and volunteering for a children's reading program. She is survived by her three children and their spouses: Deborah and Richard Henderson of Ellington, David and Robin Fecso of Simsbury and Kathryn Fecso-Trefethen of Bristol, Rhode Island and her five loved and cherished grandchildren: Ryan Henderson and his spouse, Brooklyn, Samuel Henderson and his spouse Stephanie, Sarah Trefethen, Rebeccah Trefethen, and Nathanael Fecso, and numerous nieces, nephews and their families. In addition to her husband and parents, Carmella was predeceased by her three siblings: Angelo, Grace and Josephine. Elinor (Breining) Tinto, 99, of Bloomfield and Green Valley, AZ, beloved wife and best friend for 62 years of the late John E. Tinto, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 14, 2023. Elinor was born in Hartford, daughter of the late William and Ellen (Smith) Breining, and was a graduate of Bloomfield High School, Class of 1942, where she was the class treasurer and on the committee to choose the class ring. She was employed with the U. S. Postal Service, where she held many different positions, and retired after over 30 years of service. She and John moved to Green Valley, AZ in 1982 to spend their retirement years in peacefulness and sunshine. Elinor was a loving wife, mother, aunt, and friend. She will be fondly remembered as a kind and social woman who loved to get to know people, and after five minutes of being with someone, would know all about them. She was set in her ways and enjoyed doing things her way, but everything came from a place of love. Elinor was a member of the Green Valley Arts & Crafts Club, Stamping Group, the Marine Corps League, the New England Club, and the Camera and Computer Clubs. She and John loved to travel worldwide and attended Marine Corps reunions and took many Shrine and Masonic trips. Elinor had a green thumb and loved to take care of her gardens in both Bloomfield and Arizona, and her many many plants. She was an avid Red Sox fan and enjoyed watching the games until this past year. . . . Elinor is survived by her daughter, Gail Tinto of Bloomfield; nieces, Gloria Edgerton and Jean Tinto, both of Newington; many cousins in the Hartford area; and other relatives and friends. Elinor's family would like to thank the nurses, aides, doctors, and social workers at Duncaster, McLean Hospice, and Heaven's Hands for their attentive and thoughtful care of Elinor. The visits from the therapy dogs always brightened her days and provided the best medicine. Her service will be private. Born and raised in Connecticut, a daughter of the late Harmon and Phyllis (Ahearn) Howe, she touched the hearts of those who were blessed to know her. She left us on November 9, 2023, at the age of 68. A lifelong resident of the Nutmeg State, Debbie exuded a memorable personality. She was known for her unwavering love for family, her culinary talents, her crafting skills, and her eclectic taste in music and television. Debbie had a profound enthusiasm for Disney World, where she created countless magical memories with her family. One of her favorite musical groups was Herman's Hermits, and the timeless tunes of this band often filled her with nostalgia. Debbie also found solace and joy in watching older TV shows, transporting her back to the cherished moments of her youth. Debbie is survived by her daughter Sara Ferrero and her husband Matthew of Moncks Corner, South Carolina; April Basch and her husband Matthew of Willington, CT; her granddaughters Hannah Basch of Frigate Bay, St. Kitts and Nevis and Allyson Basch of Willington, CT. She is also survived by her brother Harmon C. Howe, Jr. and his wife, Bess, of Vernon, CT and Dennis Howe and his wife, Gail, of Ledyard, CT. Beyond her love for family, her hobbies, and entertainment, Debbie was a compassionate advocate for animal welfare. She supported various animal activism and rescue efforts, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of countless pets. Doris Joynson Geres, 89, died peacefully surrounded by family, Saturday, November 11, 2023. Doris, born February 25,1934 in Liverpool, England, was the daughter of Mona (Cottier) and Eric Joynson. She was the beloved wife of the late John (Jack) Hayden Geres. She crossed an ocean in 1956 to marry him and begin a life together. She and Jack lived in Hartford and Glastonbury before settling in East Hartford. Doris worked at the O'Brien and Hockanum schools in East Hartford as a paraprofessional. She enjoyed knitting and gardening, listening to all kinds of music and socializing with friends. She was an enthusiastic fan of the Liverpool Football Club. Doris was a member of British Brides, the Red Hat Society and her Wednesday women's group. Her family will fondly remember her Sunday roasts with Yorkshire pudding, her Christmas shortbread and trifle. Her true passion was her grandchildren. She loved spending time with them. She was a very special part of their lives, so much so that she became the honorary Grandma to many of their friends. Doris is survived by her sons: Michael S. Geres and his wife Sandra of Vernon; John E. Geres of Portland; and Stuart A. Geres and his wife Meaghan of Coventry; her grandchildren: David Geres and his partner Larissa Johnson of Waterford; Linnea Geres Rogers and her husband Bryan of Manchester; Andrew Geres of Glastonbury; and Morgan Geres and her partner John Epes of Snyder, TX. She is survived by her sister Margaret Stafford of Liverpool, England. She was predeceased by her brother Stanley Joynson and his wife Margaret, and her daughter in law, Lynne (Symkowicz) Geres.
