Marilyn Lois (Vestal) McEntire, 93 of Spearfish passed away September 8, 2023. Marilyn was born September 6, 1930 at her grandparents' home in Ottertail County, MN. Baby Marilyn, her mother and father then returned to Fort Snelling, where her father was stationed, and they lived there for her first few years. Later, Marilyn and her parents returned to her grandparent's farm where she and her parents lived in a small house on the farm. In 1943, after the death of her father, Marilyn and her mother moved to Minneapolis where Marilyn attended high school and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Following high school, she moved to California where she held a variety of jobs including working as a riveter for an aviation company. Marilyn also received cosmetology training and was a licensed cosmetologist for Revlon and Max Factor, a position she held for many years. In 1968 she married James "Red" McEntire and her return to military life started again. Marilyn and Jim made their home throughout the United States as they followed Jim's military career. They enjoyed making their home in many states including Rhode Island and Nevada. After Jim retired, both Marilyn and Jim worked for the Civil Service Department and continued their love of travel. Later, they accepted jobs in Alaska, the dream of their life and lived and worked on the Aleutian Islands. In 1998 Jim fully retired and Marilyn and Jim returned to her grandparent's home in Ottertail County, outside of Vergas, MN. Marilyn often commented that her journey in life brought her back to the same house she was born in. Marilyn and Jim lived at her grandparent's home for a few years before moving on to Washington State and then permanently to South Dakota. Marilyn had many hobbies. She was a beautiful seamstress and a great cook; she also enjoyed making ceramics. She and her husband spent their off-duty time traveling to all parts of the United States. They also enjoyed riding dirt bikes through the desert and learning how to pan for gold, where they enjoyed some success. Marilyn could navigate any city, and this was before GPS. Marilyn is survived by her husband, James "Red" McEntire. She was preceded in death by her infant brother, Dale Vestal, and her parents, Curtis Vestal and Luella Albright Vestal Buck and step-father, Randolph Buck. Theta Lorraine "Snookie" Grove, 92, passed away peacefully on November 21st, 2023. Leaving behind her legacy of unconditional love and generosity. Theta, born on October 17th, 1931 to Richard Enderby Sr. and Blanche Teresa Lorang Enderby, at 101 Cemetery St. Lead, South Dakota. Snookie graduated from Lead High School in 1949. Shortly after, Snookie married the love of her life, Darl "Peanuts" Grove on July 30th, 1949. The two shared a bond built on unwavering devotion and companionship. Together, they created a nurturing home filled with laughter, affection, and cherished memories. Later, they had four children, two twin boys, Lonnie (stillborn) and Lennie, Lorrie "Sissy" and Lindie "Peachie". After all of her children were in school full time, she worked at Western Auto Store and Norwest Bank (First National Bank) in Lead. A friend to all, showing kindness to everyone in her bank line, later retiring at 55. Always joking she was the "good looking lady with the white hair. " After Peanuts passed away, Snookie married James (Jake) Schumacher in 1985, later divorcing in 2005. Her love extended far beyond her immediate family. Known for her vibrant spirit and welcoming nature, Snookie had a remarkable ability to connect with everyone she met. Her genuine interest in others and her infectious smile made her loved by all. Family was the cornerstone of Snookie's life. Her devotion had no boundaries. Her grandchildren were her greatest pride and joy. She loved simple things in life. Such as bowling and watching figure skating. Loving Gone with the Wind, Vodka Squirt, Oreos and milk, listening to books on tape, and of course Robert Redford. Among her passions were family gatherings, which held a special place in her heart. Snookie is survived by three children, Lennie (Dottie) Grove of Spearfish, SD. Lorrie (Jeff) Townsend of Spanaway, Washington. Lindie Dunlap of Tucson, Arizona. Seven Grandchildren, Brian Grove of Spearfish, SD. Jennifer (Dave) Dorward of Paradise Valley, Arizona. Isaac (Emily) Dana of Tacoma, Washington. Danielle (Daymond) Cole of Hoquiam, Washington. Mindie (Lance) Morlock of Kalispell, Montana. Keef (Charmaine) Pinkerton of Tucson, Arizona. Keelia "Cheetie" (Adam) Nissen of Flint, Texas and twelve Great Grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her mother (Blanche) in 1932, her father (Richard) in 1950, son Lonnie in 1952, husband Darl "Peanuts" Grove in 1980, brother Richard Jr. "Pinky" Enderby in 1996, brother Robert "Whitey" Enderby in 1996 , brother William "Blackie" Enderby in 1998, step-sister Raetta Enderby Arionus in 2021, and half-brother Charles Enderby in 2023. She lived a full life that touched the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her. Services and a celebration of Snookies life will be held in Summer 2024.Show more

Mae Beth Gill, daughter, sister, companion, friend, teacher, and artist left us November 18, 2023 after a valiant battle with cancer. Mae Beth Klock, was born September 14, 1961 in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Later she moved to Sarasota, FL to be closer to her parents. It was there she met and fell in love with Perry Salzmann. They moved to Spearfish in 1999. Being the first in her family to go to college, she received college degrees in K-12 Education, Special Education and Art, graduating in 2006. For six years, she worked for the Ann Froelich Summer Youth Theatre, taking great joy in creating something wonderful from odds and ends. Mae never saw a piece of wood or egg carton that she didn't see as a potential art piece. Mae taught Special Ed in Newcastle, Gillette and Belle Fourche. Always an artist and art advocate, she used her free time in Belle to have an Art Club and art class for her grade level. She was multi-talented, experimenting with different mediums such as painting, jewelry, fabrics appliques, and wood assemblages. "Creative people don't have a mess; they have ideas lying around everywhere!" And that was Mae!Mae, Anita, and Laurie created The Art Nest Gallery in Spearfish 4 1/2 years ago, featuring 50+ artists. There are a number of Mae's artworks in the gallery. Her sisters say if you need to know who, what, where, just ask Mae; she had a memory like an elephant. Everyone who knew her would agree. She seemed to always need the bathroom when it was time to do the dishes, last one in the car and up from the dinner table. She is survived by her companion, Perry Salzmann; parents Dan and Joyce Klock, sisters, Patricia (Don) Hicks, Ruth Ann McCargar and Loretta Houtch, a niece, Lucy Mobley, and nephews, Aaron Klock and Christopher Houtch. Michael L. Smith, 74, of Spearfish, SD passed away on Thursday, November 2, 2023 at the Monument Health Spearfish Hospital. A Funeral Service will be held at 2;00 pm on Wednesday, November 8, 2023 at Rude's Funeral Home in Brookings, SD. A Visitation will be held one hour prior from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm on Wednesday, November 8, 2023 at Rude's Funeral Home. Michael Lee Smith was born on February 12, 1949 in Belle Fourche, SD, the son of Whitey and Pete (Falon) Smith. The family soon moved to Brookings, SD where he attended Brookings High School until the 10th grade. Michael then enlisted in the United States Army from April 18, 1966 till April 17, 1969 where he served in Korea. He was married to Linda Nelson in December of 1971. To this union, 3 children were born; Jennifer, Eddie and Patrick. He worked at Waltz construction where he originally learned how to run a crane. Michael then worked for Graves Construction, building bridges on Interstate 29. He then worked for Keller Construction which turned into Hayward Baker Construction until he retired in 2010. In 2004, Michael met Karen Jacobsen. They would spend the next 19 years together before being united in marriage on September 6, 2023. Michael enjoyed watching football and baseball, the outdoors (hunting and fishing), playing cards and rolling dice. He also was very knowledgeable in the kitchen and enjoyed to cook. Michael was a very generous man, sometimes too much. He was very loving and was always there to talk when you needed him. Michael was a member of the local 3 union and was a lifetime member of the V. F. W. . Michael is survived by his wife, Karen Jacobsen; children, Jennifer (Keith) Vanden Bosch and Eddie Smith; grandchild Logan (Trinity) Harmelink; step-children Cynthia (Jerry) Bruns, Cory Smith and Darrin (Carmen) Smith.
