Marian Jane Vetter, 92, of Springfield, died at 8:57 p. m. on Thursday, April 20, 2023, at Springfield Memorial Hospital. Jane was born on June 29, 1930, in Buffalo, the daughter of Russell and Ruth (Lester) Edwards. She married William "Bill" Vetter on February 14, 1953, and they moved to Fort Lewis, WA while Bill served in the Army. Jane worked in the office at Fort Lewis during their time there. Jane was a lifetime resident of Buffalo. She attended Brown's Business College and worked for Franklin Life Insurance Company for four years before getting married. Jane and Bill had three children together and after they all entered school, Jane worked at Tri City Elementary School as the secretary, as well as the unofficial nurse, mother, and grandmother to all the students. She worked there for 20 years and loved every minute of it. Jane was a founding member of the Town and Country Women's Club of Buffalo and served as President. She also served on the board for the Sangamon County Historical Society, was active on the board of the Brinkerhoff Foundation serving as President, was on the board of the Sangamon County Nurses Association and belonged to the Cachet Club and Questors of Sangamon County. Jane was a lifelong member of the Buffalo United Methodist Church and she also volunteered at Memorial Hospital for 17 years. In 2001, Jane was presented with the Women of Achievement Award by Lt. Governor Corinne Wood. The award recognizes women who demonstrate excellence in their professional or volunteer work and who dedicate their time and effort to enhance their communities. Lt. Governor Wood said "We recognize the women of today who are making history in their own right. They have committed themselves to improving our schools, hospitals, and families and I congratulate her on her achievements. "Jane was preceded in death by her parents, and brother Robert Wayne Edwards. She is survived by her husband, Bill Vetter of Springfield; children, Gary (Barbara) Vetter of Grayling, MI, Kevin (Shaffin) Vetter of Lakeville, CT, and Carrie (Daniel) Reter of Williamsville, IL; grandchildren, Matthew (Kerry) Vetter, Joshua (Emily) Vetter, Zachary (Cadie) Vetter, Maxwell and Madelyn Reter, and Alexander and Max Shariff-Vetter; and great-grandchildren, Noah, Lucas, Oliver, Finnegan, Brooke, and Sophia Vetter. Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4:00 p. m. until 7:00 p. m. on Thursday, April 27, 2023, at Butler Funeral Home - Springfield, 900 S. Sixth St. , Springfield. Funeral Ceremony: 10:00 a. m. on Friday April 28, 2023, at Butler Funeral Home - Springfield with Rev. Larry Hanson officiating. Burial will follow at Mechanicsburg Cemetery.
