Shirleen Hanis

Shirleen Hanis

Age - 74

November 14, 2023

Shirleen Hanis passed away on November 10th at her home in Scranton, PA at the age of 73. Her love for travel, serving, and family will act as a powerful legacy for all those who knew her. Shirleen was born on November 13, 1949, to Carl and Eleanor Kellerman. The firstborn of eight, Shirleen was always independent and passionate. She came by her love of serving naturally. Her mother, Eleanor, served as a nurse, mother, or volunteer in some capacity her entire life. Her father, Carl, was a WW2 veteran, served as a railroad postman and a leader in their local church. After graduating from Scranton Technical High School in 1969, Shirleen went to work for Bell Telephone for many years. Her second occupation was at Net Federal Credit Union. These, however, were her occupations, but they were not her job. The work of Shirleen's life was the intentional love she displayed and the joy she shared. An avid traveler, Shirleen spent much of her time on excursions with friends and family. She visited much of Europe and Russia, went on a pilgrimage to Israel and Turkey, traveled to Brazil, and spent many happy days skiing in Colorado, Utah, and New England. Her final big vacation was a sister's trip with her younger sisters to Mackinac Island, a bucket list item that Shirleen was able to cross off before her passing. Shirleen was wholly devoted to her family. Her siblings and many nieces and nephews greatly benefitted from her love and intention. Regardless of the distance or effort, she never missed a graduation or wedding. Every trip meant one more exotic Christmas ornament in each niece's and nephew's stocking. She had a vested interest in the lives of all her relatives, was always quick to ask questions, and was genuinely curious about what was going on in the lives of those she loved. She was apt to have a great-nephew or niece accompany her on cross-country road trips and spoil them all along the way. Not only did she love her family, she believed that it was a joy and privilege to serve. Shirleen was an active member of Grace Bible Church in Dunmore where she was adored for her gentle spirit and gregarious demeanor. Her deep commitment to her faith drove her to constantly think of others and their needs. She served in Grace Bible's children's ministry, as well as at the Keystone Mission, and was the secretary for the Scranton Chapter of New Vision Pioneers. Shirleen joins her mother, father, and other family members in Heaven. She is survived by her two sisters (Betsy Kellerman Mead and Janice Kellerman Skiles), five brothers (Bill Kellerman, Bruce Kellerman, David Kellerman, Danny Kellerman, and Larry Kellerman), and dozens of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, all of whom were substantially blessed by this amazing women. There will be a service held at Grace Bible Church in Dunmore on Thursday, November 16 at 1:00 pm. Those friends wishing to see the family may do so prior to the service starting at 12:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Child Evangelism Fellowship of Lackawanna County or Keystone Mission in Scranton. On the Friday of Nov. 10, 2023 at 8:30 am, Richard A Plotkin, of Scranton Pennsylvania, passed away after complications from a stroke, under Hospice at St. Mary's Villa in Elmhurst Township. Richard was 82 years old. Richard was born on June 27, 1941 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, the third child, and second son, of Joseph and Tillie Arenberg Plotkin. Richard is remembered as a loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, entrepreneur, and bandmate. He continued the tradition of owning and operating the family shoe business, JG Plotkin & Sons Shoes, servicing the community with shoes and work boots. Richard was a man of many interests. Besides music, and managing his own record label, Debra Records, he had an entrepreneurial spirit and started several small companies selling toys, stuffed animals, and electric trains. He took up running and ran over a dozen marathons including the NYC marathon and Boston marathon. His sons fondly remember running laps around Lake Scranton with him while he was training. He went back to college later in life, and obtained his Masters degree in Criminal Justice at Marywood University (class of 1987) at the age of 45. He was always interested in the law, though he never paid attention to the parking regulations in downtown Scranton, preferring to park illegally behind his store. He was always the life of the party, and could often be found at festivals and events around town playing music with one of his Doo-wop bands, The Magics and The Paramounts, writing and arranging songs, or in the recording studio working with one of the many bands he produced. In more recent years his grandkids had the opportunity to watch him perform on the main stage at La Festa. Richard is survived by his sister, Adele Pollack; his two sons, Steven (Michelle) and Michael (Kendra); his former wife and best friend Carol Plotkin (thus proving anything is possible); three grandchildren whom he adored; several nieces and nephews who called him their "cool uncle"; and many extended family and good friends.
