I'm sure she is somewhere smiling and hoping we are too, because she died the way she would have wanted, having just returned from a lovely week in Japan with her two sons - one of the most enjoyable weeks of her life. We are smiling with her, but it is difficult. Charles Laughlin Jr

Charles Laughlin Jr

Age - 82

December 8, 2023

Charles Eugene Laughlin, Jr. , age 82, passed away on Friday, December 1, 2023 in San Antonio, Texas. He was born on November 14, 1941 in Orange, Texas to Nona Lee Marshall and Charles Eugene Laughlin. Gene was a loving husband, dedicated father, doting grandfather and loyal friend. Gene grew up in Odessa, Texas where his legacy of diligent work ethic began. His family often relived with him his many years as a paper boy, first delivering on bicycle and later from his Chevy. He went on to The University of Texas earning degrees in Industrial Engineering and Business Administration. Austin is where he met the true love of his life, Mary Charlene Rogerson. They were married January 30, 1965, and Gene soon began Officer Training School in the U. S. Navy where he achieved the rank of Lieutenant (junior grade). He was stationed in Kingsville, Texas where their first daughter, Laura, was born. His second and third daughters, Mary Lee and Julia, were born in Plano, Texas as he began his professional career. Gene's career consisted of two chapters. The first drew from his engineering degree as he spent years honing his work ethic legacy at Texas Instruments in Dallas and later at Metal Fab Products and Petrosonics in Odessa and Midland. His second chapter drew from his business degree as he transitioned into financial consulting with Merrill Lynch in Midland in his late forties. Gene's brilliant mind and fierce determination made both chapters hugely successful and left his family with another lasting example of resilience in the face of change. Health challenges began for Gene at the young age of 36 when he suffered his first heart attack. Over the rest of his life, his resiliency was evident again and again as he endured many difficult surgeries and lengthy recoveries with grit and determination. Gene was a gifted tinkerer. His love of flight prompted countless hours spent designing, building and flying radio control airplanes. His respect for guns led to an extensive and well cared for collection. And his passion for food brought about a custom-designed smoker, large cookbook collection and many grateful family members and friends who enjoyed the fruits of his labors. Above all, Gene leaves a legacy of commitment to family. His adoration for Charlene was abundantly clear until his final days. Together, they treasured their children and grandchildren, and reflecting on their shared memories and recalling the joy they'd known as parents and grandparents was their greatest pastime in his later years. His daughters are proud and honored to have been his. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Laughlin; sister, Evelyn Hanson; mother, Nona Laughlin. Gene is survived by his wife, Charlene Laughlin; daughters, Laura Rooker and husband Chris Rooker, Mary Lee Pyle and husband David Pyle, and Julia Ogden and husband Chad Ogden; grandchildren, Caleb Rooker and wife Elizabeth Lindsey Rooker, Emma Rooker, Grace Ogden, Chloe Ogden, Kate Ogden and Elizabeth Rooker. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2023 at 12:00 p. m. at the Liberty Hill Cemetery, 16101 TX-29 Liberty Hill, 78642. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.Show more
