Reverend Steenbergen

Reverend Steenbergen

Age - 95

December 1, 2023

Reverend James "Jim" Calvin Steenbergen, 95 year old Woodward resident, passed away peacefully Saturday, November 25, 2023 in Woodward, Oklahoma finally joining his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p. m. Friday, December 1, 2023 at the First Methodist Church Woodward. Burial will follow in the Elmwood Cemetery with the United States Air Force providing military graveside rites. Arrangements are under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home. James Calvin Steenbergen was born on July 10, 1928 in Ft. Cobb, Oklahoma to Freeman and Lula Mae (Dabney) Steenbergen. In high school, Jim played football, and after school, he worked at a pharmacy where he learned about dental care and warned kids against sugary sodas that could damage their teeth. He spent a lifetime living by this rule often flashing his handsome smile and healthy teeth into his 90's. He began his college degree at Cameron University in Lawton, Oklahoma, and before finishing his degree, he joined the US Air Force. He was stationed in San Bernadino, California, where he met and married his beautiful wife and life partner-California girl Elizabeth "Betty" Wiepert. After being honorably discharged from the U. S. Air Force, he attended Oklahoma State University, earning his Bachelors degree in Animal Science and entered into a Masters program. After his OSU graduation, he supported his family by becoming a FFA instructor in Ft. Supply, Oklahoma. He loved his students and, until his death, remembered them fondly. He was a lifetime learner with a love of science often field testing seeds, animals and various agriculture growing methods. While living in northwest Oklahoma, he made lifelong friends like Johnny Nemechek. Johnny became fast friends-bonding over their love of farming and Christian values. Although he left to buy and run sale barns in Pauls Valley and Anadarko, where he donated the cafeteria space to a restaurant ran by his aunt, who donated all profits to build an Assembly of God Church in Anadarko. His love for the people in the NWOK area brought him back to farm and ranch in Woodward until his death. Jim promoted unity among all Christian churches and loved organizations, like Gideon's, that spread the word of God and love for all God's children. A lifelong Baptist, after his retirement from full time ministry, he and his wife began attending a local Methodist church. Betty grew up Methodist and supported Jim's desire to attend the church after one of Jim's former students was growing the church and requested his support. Jim came from a long-line of ministers and the hand of God was with him. In his early ministry years he served as a Deacon and taught a senior men's Sunday school which he said reminded him of his days teaching military veterans. He also honored senior citizens and encouraged younger generations to learn from older and wiser folks around them. He did all he could to help anyone in need. During his time as a pig farmer, he and Betty set aside and delivered sausage to local widows and those in need during Christmas. If they passed by a home they felt would benefit from a roll of frozen sausage, he would recruit his kids to place the sausage by the front door, ring the doorbell and dash away. Jim often told stories about sharing Gods love including the time he reached out to a woman from Louisiana who attended First Baptist Church. Her thick Cajun accent confused folks and was difficult to understand so Jim reached out to her making her feel safe and understood in God's house. It was his hope that everyone he met would follow the Lord. He was known to scoop up and preach to children who were homeless, ostracized and who's parents couldn't afford the basics in life let alone the small fee to attend Bible camp-which he happily paid on their behalf. He would purchase lice treatment kits and rent hotel rooms for homeless families allowing privacy to provide the lice treatments while he shopped for the kids' camp needs and clothing. During camp, these kids accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior. For those of you who knew Jim, you may remember him declaring the need for all of us to have Jesus as Lord, to love God and to love our neighbor. During the popular WWJD movement, many who visited Jim teased that the acronym really meant What Would Jim Do? Instead of being flattered, he was flustered and would remark they needed to know Jesus better. Jim would say, "I have many flaws and even the most perfect people in the world do too. We ALL need Jesus. There is not one righteous, no not one. " Jim was a long time Mason and a member of the Woodward Masonic Lodge 189. He was also committed to public and community service. He represented the community as a member of the Northwestern Electric Cooperative Board of Directors. He was also known to change flat tires for stranded motorist and even located petrified wood from the Burley Homestead to be placed in front of the Plains Indians and Pioneers Museum in Woodward, Oklahoma. He rejected the museum's offer to add his name to the wood display and instead encouraged the museum to honor the Burley's by placing their name on the wood so visitors could better understand the history and hard work required by settlers to clear land for ranching and agriculture. In the end, Jim always did his best to be a good neighbor and considered his life to be very blessed by having so many of both. He was dedicated to ranching and even in his 80's he successfully backed a gooseneck trailer up to a standard sized door to help neighbor Lois Mackey solve a difficult cattle situation. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth "Betty" Steenbergen of the home; two sons: James (Corky or Jim) Calvin Steenbergen, II of Woodward, Dale Glen Steenbergen and wife Sharon Fain of Cheyenne, Wyoming; one daughter Laurie Ann Steenbergen-Young and husband Jay of Woodward; grandchildren: Alexis Steenbergen, Adrienne Elise Steenbergen, Gunnar James Steenbergen-Young, Livya Dabney Steenbergen-Young, Grace Fain Steenbergen; his younger brother, Freddie Bruce Steenbergen of El Reno; other relatives and many friends. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, one sister JoAn Freie and his two younger brothers who died at birth. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to ones church or charity of choice.Show more

Age - 92

November 22, 2023

Florence Delene Triplett, 92, born on April 20, 1931, in Woodward, Oklahoma, took her final journey on November 11, 2023. She gracefully departed from this world, leaving behind a legacy as vibrant as her spirit. Delene's life was filled with love, laughter, and a touch of mischief. She was an adventurer from the start, growing up as the only child of Dean and LillyBelle (Rhynard) McFarland. But fate had other plans, and at just 3 months old, she lost her mother. Through life's twists and turns, Delene found comfort in the arms of her grandparents, who provided her with a nurturing home in Wichita, KS. They moved south of Curtis, OK, when Delene was in third grade. While attending Mooreland High School, Delene's heart found its match in Jimmie Reese. Their love story was straight out of a romance novel, complete with a July 9, 1950, wedding, and the joyful addition of siblings she had always yearned for. Together, they built a beautiful family, welcoming their sons Nelson and Jimmie Jr. But fate dealt a cruel blow when Jimmie passed away on August 6, 1955, while Delene was carrying their son Jimmie Jr. With love and strength, Delene packed up her boys and embarked on a courageous journey to Denver in 1959, only to return to her beloved Oklahoma in 1968. In a twist of fate, Delene found love again, marrying Elmer Peach in 1971. They shared 29 years together until Elmer's departure in March 2000. And just when you thought Delene had exhausted her capacity for love, along came Clyde Triplett. They tied the knot in November 2004, and Delene gained four amazing daughters. Clyde, too, left this world in June 2007, leaving Delene with a heart full of cherished memories. Delene's zest for life was contagious, and she embraced every moment with open arms. Her wanderlust led her on countless escapades, often accompanied by her beloved sister, Idabelle. They were affectionately nicknamed "Thelma & Louise," bringing laughter and mischief wherever they roamed. Family was the heartbeat of Delene's existence. Delene's life was marked by both joy and sorrow. Their spirits now join hers in eternal peace. Education paved the way for Delene's journey, with her attending Linwood Grade School, Oak Grove District School, Mooreland High School, and Central Business College. From getting lost in captivating books to binge-watching Blue Bloods and NCIS, she knew how to find bliss in every moment. Suzanne Kee

Suzanne Kee

Age - 74

November 22, 2023

Suzanne Swigart Kee passed away peacefully in her home on November 2, 2023, surrounded by her family. She was a devoted wife, beloved mother and grandmother, and true friend. A celebration of her life will be held in the Woodward Methodist Church on Wednesday, November 22nd at 2pm. Suzanne was born in the summer of 1949 in Mooreland, OK, to Ruth Collins Swigart and Velden Swigart. She was an overcomer from the beginning, having contracted the polio virus prior to her second birthday. Iron lungs, surgeries, casts, doctor appointments, and remote education were unfortunately a significant part of her early years. Despite these challenges, she lived a full and beautiful life, with many never realizing the limitations she endured daily. During her childhood, Suzanne inspired many. Instead of spending her days as a normal, active child, her life consisted of multiple surgeries and hospital visits. During this time, she became special friends with her neighbors, Bill and Delpha Wynn, who became like family. She spent countless hours on their ranch convalescing and when possible, riding her favorite pony, Bunny. Suzanne met the love of her life, Jamie Kee, in 1963 as a freshman at Mooreland High School. They both continued their education at the University of Oklahoma and then married in 1970. Suzanne taught first grade in Moore, OK, while Jamie pursued a law degree. In 1975, they moved to Beaver where they made their home for 35 years and raised their four daughters, Elizabeth, Sara, Erin, and Mara. Suzanne herself may have never been able to play sports, but her daughters quickly compensated and provided a myriad of softball and basketball games, cross country and track meets, all at which she cheered them on fervently. Many would joke that you did not want to sit by Suz during one of her girls' basketball games or your side would be bruised from her elbows as she would move in her seat to help them pivot or pass. Despite her physical limitations, Suzanne enjoyed sewing. She made at least five prom dresses, not to mention a variety of other fashionable items, and her customers - Elizabeth, Sara, Erin, and Mara - were high maintenance and particular! She also enjoyed traveling with her family. Even if it required navigating her scooter and handicap accessible accommodations, she refused to miss out on both international and domestic trips. Girls' shopping trips were her favorite. Upon entering a mall, it became immediately apparent that Suz could outshop the best of shoppers with zero pain and unlimited energy. Some of her sons-in-law are dismayed that a few of her daughters inherited this trait. Regardless of the challenges she faced throughout her life, Suzanne never complained. She always approached life with the most beautiful, warm smile. While her children and grandchildren may fondly discuss, and often giggle, at the quirky way she gave directions, her obsession over American Girl dolls, and her insistence to freeze everything including potato chips and milk, it is undoubtedly Suzanne's legacy as a selfless, courageous, and Godly mother that will be forever imprinted on their hearts. Suzanne is preceded in death by her husband, Robert James Kee; her parents, Velden and Ruth Swigart; and her infant sister, Nancy Jane Swigart. She is survived by her four daughters and their husbands, Elizabeth and Thad Parsons of Mooreland, Sara and Clint Metcalf of Stillwater, Erin and Richard Kirksey of Mooreland, and Mara and Justin Funk of Enid; ten grandchildren, Hutton Parsons, Ethan Parsons, Avery Metcalf, Keeton Metcalf, Michael Metcalf, Aidan Kirksey, Mikala Kirksey, Carson Funk, Finley Funk, and Connor Funk; two brothers, Ronnie Swigart of Mooreland and Larry Swigart of Woodward; brother-in-law Mike Kee and his wife Vicky of Quinlan; numerous nephews and nieces, close friends, and caregivers.
