"Colleen Alberta Clough, 79, of Newcomerstown, OH, passed away on November 19, 2023. She was born on May 1, 1944, in East Detroit, MI to the late Hazel and Albert McAllister. Albert tragically passed away when Collen was only 10 months old, but ten years later she was adopted by Howard Nelson when her mother remarried. Colleen loved and respected him as a devoted and sacrificial father. To be loved by Colleen was to be attentively listened to, gently spoken to, and diligently prayed over. She had an uncanny ability to sense the dreams of those she loved, and encouraged them with absolute confidence and enthusiasm. She laughed easily and often, though she was more likely to teasingly roll her eyes and groan when "suffering" her husband's humor. Her mind was incredibly sharp and her large vocabulary served her well in games of Scrabble and quick-witted come-backs. Colleen was a graduate of Port Huron High School and obtained a BA in Psychology and Sociology from Olivet Nazarene University. Colleen dedicated 25 years of her career as a Remedial Reading Teacher, rising above the duty of teaching a skill to inspire a life-long love of reading for countless students. Colleen devotedly loved her husband, Fred Clough, dramatically wiping off thousands of wet kisses in their 58 laughter-filled years together. She will be additionally missed by her precious daughters and their spouses, Danelle and Tim Kilpatrick and DeAnne and Bryan Prosek, her cherished grandchildren, MacKrea (and CJ) Larue, Kaitlyn (and Beau) Garrett, Luke (and Elizabeth) Prosek, Levi (and Kayla) Kilpatrick, Lucy Prosek, and Charlie Kilpatrick, and her seven great-grandchildren, Lena, Gracie, Jeremiah, Elijah, and Gideon Larue; Isaac Kilpatrick and Albert Garrett. She was preceded in death by her mother, Hazel Nelson, her father, Howard Nelson, her birth father, Albert McAllister, her brother, Ed McAllister, her step-sisters, Anne Miller and Gertrude Jex and great-grandchild, Salem Larue. Colleen dearly loved Jesus and lived out her relationship with Him in the abundant love she showered on those around her. She attentively sewed pillowcase dresses for missions and pioneered a children's church program at Newcomerstown Nazarene Church. She worshipped at First Baptist of Newcomerstown for the past 43 years. She loved to sing Hymns and Sunday School songs with her family and did so even in her last days. She spent many years of her life camping across the United States with her family, hiking and sometimes running from baby bear shaped lumps on trees and reveling in the beauty of Creation. She enjoyed sewing with her grandchildren, teaching them to quilt, mend, and appreciate themselves as masterpieces even with imperfections. She captured many memories and paid beautiful tributes to those she loved through her many scrapbooks and cards. Baking and cooking was a passion of hers, and her love of trying new recipes kept her family deliciously well fed and amused--even if attempts like apple butter on pizza didn't quite pan out. She enjoyed thrifting and repurposing, finding treasures for herself and others and brazenly painting lampshades black. She loved to learn and was always reading several books at once. This love of learning and reading was intentionally passed on to her children and grandchildren as she fostered safe environments for endless questions and taught them the love and skill of reading. Colleen will be remembered in the warm smell of homemade bread, the peaceful bubbling of the Buckhorn Creek, the smooth stitches of her many gifted, colorful quilts, and a cup of tea abandoned in the microwave for hours at a time. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that contributions be made to the Gideons or Community Hospice in Colleen's memory. She had a generous spirit and would be thrilled to see her friends and family giving with a happy heart. "Show more

Lena Ruth (Fivecoat) Scott, 96, of Gnadenhutten, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning of November 21, 2023, at Riverside Manor in Newcomerstown. Ruth was born at home in Port Washington on Cornet Avenue on March 10, 1927, to the late Homer C. and Forest (Woodard) Fivecoat. She graduated from Newcomerstown High School in 1945. After graduation, she traveled to the San Francisco Bay/Oakland Bay area and worked for the government to support the war effort. She later married Clyde McDonald Scott in 1947 and had 4 children. She returned to Ohio in 1959. She began working at the Port Washington School as a secretary, then became the "first female bus driver in the state of OHIO" for the Gnadenhutten school. She worked most of her life as an office clerk at various places, retiring in 1987 from ODOT after fifteen years there. Although a resident of the area for most of her life, Ruth was a traveler. She loved Alaska and spoke often of her adventures working there while camping in her beloved RV. One memory that was a favorite of hers was when a friend tricked her into meeting them. They went on an airplane ride to take supplies to one of the outposts in Denali, Alaska, where they flew over herds of elk as well as all of the beautiful countryside. She had many groups of RV friends that she would make plans to meet up with all over the United States. One of the gals that traveled with her had a piano built into her RV and they would have sing-a-longs! She definitely had a sense of adventure and never knew a stranger. She visited all fifty states, driving to most, and went to Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Canada and the Fiji Islands. She was a member of the Gnadenhutten United Methodist Church and she also took part in the Ohio Wagon Train. On the Ohio Wagon Train, she was able to make new friends, but enjoyed this time mostly with her family. Her brothers, nieces, nephews, and grandchildren made these trips extra special. Another adventure in which she took great pride in was her time spent helping with Habitat for Humanity, where she worked on many projects and of course made new friends. Surviving are her children: Susan Jean (Antonio) Scott-Vargas of Cordova, Mexico, Stephan Dean Scott of Dover, and Peggy Ann (Michael) Jasper of Carmel, Indiana; grandchildren: David Pete (Alona) Stackhouse, Stephan Michael (Jamie) Scott, Lindy (George) Campbell, Kristy (Daniel) Brown, Shea Zurfas, Ashlie (Amos) Adsit, Ryan Jasper, and Shannon Buja; six great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and her brothers: Gary (Jean) Fivecoat of Delaware, and John (Karen) Fivecoat of Port Washington. Ruth is preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Carl Fivecoat, a son, Robert Charles Scott, and a grandson, Eric Scott. Dennis Barlow

Dennis Barlow

Age - 80

November 11, 2023

"Dennis (Denny) Richmond Barlow, 80, of Newcomerstown, passed away at home on Tuesday, October 31, 2023. He was born in 1943 in Fitchburg, MA, to the late Clement and Harriet Barlow. When he was 12, his father moved the Family to Newcomerstown, OH, to manage the Hellers (Simons) manufacturing plant. After graduating from Newcomerstown High School in 1961, he attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts for two years before being drafted into the Army. After fulfilling his obligations to the United States of America, he decided he wanted to meet the love of his life. Just so happens that his future wife was a student at Muskingum University. After courting and falling head over heels for a young Deanna Durben, he decided he might as well get a dual degree in Business and Chemistry while there. Shortly after graduation, they snuck away to get married, thus making Ms. Durben, Mrs. Barlow. From that point forward, they proceeded to create a loving family. . . Said Family is currently crying, laughing, and reminiscing on how to describe our Family in an appropriate amount of words. Anyways, Denny and Deanna's Family consists of their lovely daughter Tammy and her husband Jeff (Zimmer), their late but impossible-to-forget son Christopher Barlow, basically son Anthony Roe and his wife Staci, kind of adopted son Seth James Barlow as a late addition, and two all-star grandchildren, Alexis and Logan Zimmer. Denny had a successful career as a plant production manager at Dover Chemical, but he thrived through his involvement in the community, endless passions, and hobbies. He was a proud and distinguished Free Mason, becoming a member of Lone Star Lodge #175 and Valley of Cambridge Scottish Rite, awarded the honorary 33 degree in 2017. He served on the school board of both Newcomerstown and Buckeye Career Center for many years. Denny was a self-proclaimed chef, cooking Masonic spaghetti dinner fundraisers, preparing breakfast for the fellowship of Isleta United Methodist Church, and roasting the most delicious Thanksgiving turkey. As a younger man, Denny played football, camped at Hickory Hollow, and enjoyed sailing and building sailboats. Later, his infatuation with the sea shifted from the water to the sky, and he became a Coshocton County Cloud Climbers model aviation club member. Over time, the New England man developed into a true country boy, enjoying hunting, fishing, raising a garden (most recently in a barrel), tapping trees and making authentic Ohio maple syrup, and helping the kids with their 4-H animals. When he wasn't pursuing one of his passions, he buggy'd around the property and neighborhood, solving the world's problems with the best friends and most wonderful neighbors he could have asked for or whoever might have cold beer on hand. He was a remarkable and beloved husband, father, and friend who will be deeply missed. Services will be held at the Coshocton County Cloud Climbers Airfield at 2:00 p. m. on Sunday, November 12. The airfield is located off of Twp. Rd. 253. Please bring a chair and a full heart. "Show more

"David Arcand, 68, passed away early on Wednesday November 1, 2023, at the Riverside Manor Nursing & Rehab Center in Newcomerstown, Ohio. David was born in Schenectady, New York to the late Robert John Arcand and Katherine (Kulchinsky) Arcand. His family traveled extensively for many years as his father was in the U. S. Airforce. David was the oldest of five children and grew up near Springfield, Massachusetts, where he attended a two-year technical college and then worked for many years at Digital Equipment Company. He was the consummate "Computer Geek" and never met a gadget, database, or new device he couldn't wait to get into. He organized a computer club, an online bulletin board, and was active in ham radios. Geo-caching around New England and feeding the chickens at his sister Jean's farm were the extent of his outdoor activities. David had moved to Columbus, Ohio in 2010 for better job opportunities and to be near his sister Jean and her husband Scott who had a farm in Adamsville. Unfortunately, a year after starting a new job in database administration, he suffered a stroke which left him with enough disabilities requiring a long-term nursing facility. David had been at Riverside Manor since late 2012. This was still close enough to Jean's farm for visits, treats, movie outings and technical consultation. David is survived by his sisters: Jean (Scott) Bush of Apalachicola, Florida; Suzanne (Robert) Hachey of Mount Airy, North Carolina; and Marie (Paul) Caizzi of Bolton, Massachusetts. Davids's dry humor, video reviews and technical support will be missed. No memorial service is planned. Our family wishes to thank all the caring people at Riverside Manor for the excellent care of our brother. "Show more
