Charles Smith Jr

Feb 27, 1954 - Dec 12, 2023

location-icon

Pembroke, NH

Charles Lindley Smith, Jr. , walked into the loving embrace of Jesus on December 12, 2023, surrounded by family. Beloved husband of Michele (Russo) Smith, and the son of the late James and Grace McKenzie, he was also predeceased at birth by Charles Lindley Smith. Loving brother to Mary Kardonsky of Derry, NH, Sandra McKenzie of Londonderry, NH, James McKenzie of Londonderry, NH, and Michelle DiNatale and her husband Tony of Jupiter FL. Dedicated father to Maria Smith and her husband Raul of Newton, MA, Letitia Borelli and her husband Frank of Concord, NH, Elisabeth Smith of Somerville, MA, and Charles Lindley Smith III and his fiance Pilar Trujillo of Portsmouth, NH. He was "Papa" to his three beautiful grandchildren, Frederick, Alexander, and Alba. "Charlie" as he was known to his friends and family, was born on February 27, 1954 and raised in Somerville, Massachusetts. From a young age Charlie was a hard worker, from cutting meat at Miller's to pumping gas at a local fill station. Charlie had a knack for business which served him well in his career at Store 24 where he excelled, eventually becoming a regional manager. He also spent a couple of years owning and running his own convenience store in Exeter, NH. A devastating Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis led Charlie to embark on his greatest vocation as a stay-at-home dad. Charlie met the love of his life, Michele, in their childhood. They grew up down the street from each other and were friends before they ever dated. Their loving adventure began in 1970 when they started "going steady. " They married in 1979 and moved from MA to NH to begin their family. They were blessed with four children. Charlie was always just a phone call away when his children had a bad day at school, needed a ride to work, or shuttling to various after-school activities. He opened his own "hair salon" to wash his girls' hair, bought all the "sugar cereals" if mom was away, and introduced horror movies at a young age. His children absolutely adored him. Due to his steadfastness and courage, the story of his life is reflected in his children's career choices: neuroscience, physical therapy, retail operations, and entrepreneurship. Charlie had a great sense of humor and a knack for sarcasm. He found enjoyment in fishing, woodworking, reading about space exploration, listening to talk radio, and bird watching. His grandchildren gave him great joy; the wheelchair rides with Freddie, lengthy FaceTime conversations with Alexander, and receiving blessings and "besos" from Alba all put a big smile on "Papa's" face. There are no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on December 22, 2023 at 10AM at Christ the King Parish, 72 S. Main Street, Concord, NH 03301. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at the Granite VNA Hospice House. The Roan Family Funeral Home in Pembroke is assisting the family with arrangements. His family lived in Montgomery and Birmingham, AL and Hot Springs and Little Rock, AR before moving to North Little Rock. He later received his Master of Divinity from the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta and then his PhD in the Sociology of Religion and Social Ethics from Boston University. He volunteered with the Scouts, ran New Rye Church's dart booth at Old Home Day every August, and enjoyed performing in the town's annual Odd Fellows variety shows. He also coached Odyssey of the Mind and EYAA basketball while his kids attended Epsom Central School, and he was a member of Pembroke Academy's Friends of Football, the booster club that first helped establish a football team at the school. In addition to being an avid sports fan, Rev. Jim was a Jeopardy! fanatic and enjoyed doing crosswords and word searches. His boisterous disposition was welcomed by all who turned to him for guidance, in the best and the worst of times. His smile and his laughter will be remembered fondly. Rev. Jim was predeceased by his wife, Dorene Fraser (Wells) Young. He is survived by his son James R. Young, Jr. , his wife Cara, and their daughter Aurora of Worcester, MA, and his daughter Alicia Young and her fiance Jeff Rawitsch of Arlington, MA.
