Justin Sartin

Age - N/A

November 29, 2023

Justin's older brother Jeremy Jr was his idol, therefore it was no wonder that Justin learned to crawl at 5 months and walk at 7 months so he could chase after Jeremy. When he learned to walk, he also learned to climb and jump off any and everything. As a child, Justin loved to play basketball and football, play video games and spend time with his friends. He also did very well in school; teachers often commented that he was one of the most well-behaved students they've ever had. At 15, Justin became a father to the most amazing baby. The happy parents named him Justin Jr. Justin took his responsibility as a father very seriously, joining a teen parenting group for young men, taking parenting classes and spending as much time with baby Justin as possible. Of course, having a child so young was not always easy, but the true love and devotion between father and son was undeniable. Justin was also blessed by the fact that Jada is an excellent mother. Justin was a quiet and private person and kept a close group of trusted friends from a very young age. He was blessed to have the loyalty of his group and the love of his brothers, Jeremy, Jamaree and Tango. Justin had a spark for adventure, travel, and experiencing new things. This past year, he and his friends traveled to San Diego, Arizona and Miami. His open spirit drove him to seek work driving and when not at work, Justin could be found in the gym boxing, weightlifting, or challenging himself with brutal exercise routines. Justin had no problem being dragged around by his mom on "boring family outings" to the Zoo, the beach or river, OMSI, the Newport Aquarium, carnivals and fairs. Justin was photogenic and did side jobs modeling. His smile and laugh could weaken any heart. His style and fashion were immaculate. Fresh to death. Justin would most like to be remembered for his love for his son, family, friends, his devotion to athleticism and of course his good looks. Our family would like to share our most sincere gratitude for all who helped us during this terrible time, from bringing meals, sending flowers, volunteering expert time and services, and most importantly simply being there if you were able. We thank you much. May God bless you all.Show more

In the early morning hours of November 19, 2023, Sharon "Sherry" Lenore Hillhouse, 78, of Portland, OR, passed away quietly after falling unconscious following an accidental head injury. Sherry was born in Missoula, MT, on January 24, 1945, and grew up on a farm on the Rattlesnake Creek. She was born to her parents Fred Hill, and Clara Hill, the youngest of her three siblings, with two brothers Butch and Denny Hill. Sherry graduated from Missoula County High School. Sherry worked as the Parts Supply Administrator at Leatherman Tool for 30 years. She enjoyed going to the coast with her family; spending time at the alpine slides on Mt. Hood; and watching bull riding. She took pride in her creative skills making crochet towels and wash rags, that she gifted to everyone she knew, as well as cultivating a vegetable and fruit garden. She even provided pumpkins to kindergartners at the local elementary school for many years for Halloween. Additionally, she took pride in the fantastical wonderland that she created in front of her house with fun figurines and colorful decorations to bring joy to children and anyone passing by. In her early years Sherry was unstoppable. She was a golden glove boxer, bull rider and bronco rider. She was always active and full of life and when she had her children, she instilled that quality in them. She played softball with local teams, and enjoyed camping, biking, and doing anything out in nature. She longed to return to her roots in Montana. Sherry thrived on helping others and loved animals. She was known in her later years to feed the stray cats, adopting at least three of them and later became a foster parent for the local Humane Society. Sherry is survived by her dear friend Victor Baldwin, her two daughters Starr Winborne-Smith, and Spring Hillhouse, and her grandchildren Charity Waters, Sierra Waters, and Jordan Winborne, along with her brother Denny Hill, and multiple other friends and near family members. Beyond his professional pursuits, Phil was a pillar of strength and a source of inspiration for his family. He cherished moments spent with loved ones, friends, and traveling the world with his longtime partner, Jean Yates. He was a member of The Bergie (Bergfreunde) group for 15 years (probably longer), tennis groups and multiple car club groups throughout the years. For almost 22 years he delivered Meals on Wheels which was a huge joy in his life. He loved gardening, raising bees, feeding birds, snowshoeing, biking, playing pinochle, refereeing basketball and football, attending as many social gathers as he could, a good trivia question and all things sports. His kindness knew no bounds, and he made a friend everywhere he went. A true friend to many, Phil had an infectious spirit that brought joy to every gathering. His sense of humor, warmth, and genuine interest in others created a welcoming atmosphere wherever he went. Whether through a shared laugh, a thoughtful gesture, or a comforting word, Phil had a unique way of making people feel seen and valued. His smile and laughter were truly contagious. Phil's departure leaves a profound void in the hearts of his family, friends, and the community at large. Yet, as we mourn his passing, let us also celebrate the rich tapestry of a life well-lived. He may be gone from our sight, but his spirit will forever reside in the cherished memories and the countless lives he touched for those fortunate enough to know him. As we say our goodbyes, let us remember Phil not with sorrow, but with gratitude for the gift of his presence in our lives. May his soul find eternal peace, and may the memories of Phil continue to inspire us to live with the same passion, love, and kindness that defined his remarkable journey on this earth. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to Meals on Wheels, a cause close to Phil's heart.Show more

Eleanor Stodd

Eleanor Stodd

Age - 93

November 29, 2023

Eleanor "Ellie" Jean Vetorino Stodd passed away peacefully in the early hours of November 8, 2023. Ellie was born December 16, 1929 in New Bedford, Massachusetts, the fourth of five children, to Frank and Clara Vetorino. Descendants of Portuguese whalers, her family moved to Cincinnati, Ohio in the early 1930s, though they stayed connected to her New Bedford roots with summer trips "passing thru the Lincoln Tunnel" to visit extended family. She often talked about eating fresh caught lobster on her uncles' fishing boats. Raised Catholic, Ellie started out attending Catholic school but eventually graduated from Withrow (public) High School in 1948. She worked odd jobs in Cincinnati before moving out west in 1954 to join her oldest sibling, Frank in Portland, Oregon. Living in downtown Portland while working at the Benjamin Franklin Savings and Loan, Ellie met Rodney "Rod" Stodd through a mutual friend in 1955. They were married in late October 1956 in Portland and honeymooned in the Oregon coastal town of Yachats at the Adobe Hotel, where they would continue to celebrate their anniversary for almost 50 of their 56 years of marriage. Ellie gave birth to four children in five years starting with Tom in 1958, Dave in 1959, Amy in 1961 and Lisa in 1963. Our family lived our first 15 years in Beaverton, Oregon where Ellie and Rod formed lifelong friendships with neighbors who shared the common bond of raising multiple children. In the early 1970s we moved to Central Oregon - first Sunriver, then Bend - where Ellie would remain in the same home on Quincy Avenue for 50 years. As a stay-at-home mom and a talented self-taught cook and seamstress, Ellie was the creative force behind our lively household, turning chaos into laughter and joy. She wasn't just the heart and humor of our home; she was the ultimate hostess, orchestrating gatherings that became cherished traditions in our family, from family reunions to our festive Christmas celebrations. She created an atmosphere that beckoned relatives and friends with open arms, resulting in a lifetime of fun and hilarious memories. Her later years were spent visiting her children and grandchildren, camping, golfing, and reading her mystery novels on the deck. She was an energetic and entertaining lady, and even as her memory eventually faded, she maintained her witty and sardonic sense of humor. Ellie was preceded in death by her husband Rod, who passed in 2012, her parents, and her siblings, Frank, Bob and Kathy. She will be remembered lovingly by her children, Tom, Dave (spouse Kevan), Amy (spouse Doug) and Lisa, and grandchildren, Guy, Bridget, Jake, Nicholas, Annabelle, Peri and Sophie, and her brother, Gordon. As we mourn the loss of Ellie, let us celebrate the vibrant spirit that defined her life. May her memory live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her. David Maynard

David Maynard

Age - 78

November 29, 2023

David More Maynard; December 8, 1945 - November 22, 2023 David was born in New Haven and grew up in Wilmington, Delaware. He took pride and joy in being son, brother, husband, father, minister and counselor. As a conscientious objector, David felt compelled to suspend his studies at Harvard in 1966 to counsel draftees with the American Friends Service Committee. He and wife Phyllis welcomed daughter Krista, returned to Boston to finish his degree, and enlarged the family with son Michael. Divinity school ultimately brought David and his family to the West Coast, crossing the country in a Volkswagen van, the first of three he cherished. With his M. Div. from Berkeley's Starr King seminary in hand, he moved alone to finish his preparation for ministry by interning at First Unitarian Church in Portland, where he met and married Jane, his partner for the next 47 years. His call to serve took David, Jane, and step-daughter Leslie to Peoria, Illinois, where they added son David and gained an appreciation for midwestern values. He was next called to the UU church in Nashville, Tennessee from 1980 to 1993. Every summer, he and Jane loaded the kids into the van for cross-country camping trips, a memorable part of their childhoods. The youngest children having left for college, David and Jane moved back to a magical home in Northeast Portland. The family's roots on the East and West Coasts made not only travel but hosting visitors from around the world a part of family life that came to define Jane's and his life together. David began a second career as an addiction counselor and found great fulfillment in that role and in his advocacy on behalf of 12 Step programs. He also continued his ministry, first at the West Seattle Unitarian congregation and then, from 2002 to 2012, at the Eastrose Fellowship UU in Gresham. In retirement, David and Jane frequently visited grandchildren in California, and family and friends throughout the world. The Norwegian Star became a favorite getaway, and they cruised all over the globe. David never stopped counseling, talking every day to family, friends and mentees around the country and the world. And he never stopped repairing locks, exploring construction sites, and relishing the challenge of a daily New York Times crossword with anyone who was willing to help. David is survived by wife Jane, four brothers, four children, five grandchildren, and the loving community he fostered wherever he was. In lieu of flowers, consider a donation to Compassion & Choices or to SOLVE Oregon. Better yet, bend over and pick up litter in your neighborhood.Show more
