Mark passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, November 4th, 2023, with his wife by his side. He was born January 24th, 1947, in Middletown, CT. He was son of the late Sidney and Hulda Finkelstein of Portland. Mark will be missed dearly by all who knew him. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Donna of 45 years, who was the love of his life and best friend, and their children: Adam (Marilyn) Finkelstein; Matthew (Haley) Finkelstein; and Amanda (William) Longo; grandchildren Maya, Max, Billy, Abby and Daphne; cousins: Lois Wasserman, Miriam Grahame, David (Rosemary) Baggish; sister-in-law Wendy (Daniel) Heery; brother-in-law Kenneth (Louelin) Groth; brother-in-law Richard Hayes; as well as many other cousins, nieces, nephews and countless friends whom he considered family, most especially, Sheldon and Kathleen Sones and their family. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his Aunt Zelda Freifeld and sister-in-law Sharon Groth. Professionally Mark spent his life helping others, as one of the most distinguished long-term care administrators in the country. He became a nursing home administrator at just 25 years of age, leading New Lakeview Convalescent Home in Cheshire. He was named President and CEO of Health and Rehabilitation Trust, a publicly traded company out of Newton, Massachusetts, before the age of 40, and would rise to the presidency of the American College of Health Care Administrators, the nation's main advocacy organization for long-term care. Mark was a member of the adjunct faculty of Quinnipiac University and a guest lecturer at both the Harvard Business School and Yale School of Law. From 1992-2002, he was President and CEO of CPL Subacute LLC, managing long-term care facilities throughout New England. Throughout his career, he received numerous local and national awards, including Administrator of the Year from the CT Chapter of American College of Nursing Home Administrators, Health Care Hero Award from the Hartford Business Journal, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the CT Association of Health Care Facilities/CT Center for Assisted Living. Before retiring in 2018, he served as the Vice President of Hughes Health Care and Rehabilitation. Under his leadership, and the work of his team, Hughes was recognized as a "Best Nursing Home in America" for seven consecutive years by the U. S. News and World Report. In 2016, they were one of three providers nationwide to receive the Gold Quality Award from the American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living. In 2022, he was inducted into the inaugural class of the American College of Health Care Administrators Hall of Fame. In addition to his professional accomplishments, he was very active in his community, where he served as the Chair of the Portland Board of Finance, member of the Portland Board of Selectmen, and Deputy First Selectman of the Town of Portland. He was a Corporator of Middlesex Hospital, and a past member of the Board of Directors at Congregation Adath Israel of Middletown, where he was a lifelong member. In his free time, Mark was an avid sports fan, enjoyed going to the theatre, traveling (most fondly, Bermuda and Orlando), and most of all, spending time with his family. To those who knew him, Mark will be remembered for his humor, strength, knowledge, and generosity. He will be forever loved and greatly missed. A celebration of Mark's life will be held at Congregation Adath Israel Synagogue, 8 Broad Street in Middletown on Thursday, November 9th, 2023, at 1:00 pm. Following the conclusion of the service, the burial will take place at The Swedish Cemetery, located at 184 William Street in Portland. The family wishes to send a special thank you to all of Mark's doctors and health care heroes for their care and compassion over the years. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Congregation Adath Israel Synagogue, P. O. Box 337, Middletown, CT 06457 or the charity of your choice.
