Janice Elaine Lehrke September 26, 1937-November 6, 2023 of Portage, Michigan Janice Elaine (Clarke) Lehrke age 86, of Portage, Michigan passed away on November 6, 2023, at White Oaks Assisted Living Center in Lawton. Janice was born on September 26, 1937, in Kalamazoo, Michigan to the late Richard Dalton and Phyllis Constance (Maxam) Clarke. Jan, as her friends and family called her, was a lifelong resident of the Kalamazoo/Portage community. She held several jobs over the years, but her role driving school buses led her to the love of her life; Frank Lehrke, who proceeded her in death. Frank and Jan married on August 6, 1977. Jan was a wonderful loving mother to Greg (Linda) Root of Kalkaska, Michigan, David (Terry) Root of Lawton Michigan, and Lynn (Bill) Dean of Paw Paw, Michigan. She cherished her seven grandchildren and was thrilled with her thirteen great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her beloved sister, Nancy Schallhorn, of West Friendship, Maryland and numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. Jan was employed by IHS Distributing for over 32 years as a bookkeeper and retired in 1999. She always had a smile and a kind word for everyone she met. Jan had many interests; she loved to travel and camp. She completed several beautiful quilts, enjoyed gardening and finding unique rocks to adorn her garden. Jan was a lifelong member of Pathfinder Church, formerly Portage First United Methodist Church. She was dedicated and active in her Church and her deep faith was a part of her identity. You could find Jan welcoming the congregation on Sundays, teaching Sunday School, and organizing Church potlucks, trips, dinners, and events. The family will receive friends from 11:00 am until 12:00 pm Friday, November 10th at the Pathfinder Church, formerly Portage First United Methodist Church 8740 S. Westnedge Ave. A service to celebrate Jan's life will begin at 12:00 on Friday after visitation at Pathfinder Church. Pastor Ron Hansen and Brother Donald Wolfgang will be officiating. Immediately following the service there will be a time for food and fellowship in the Church Fellowship Hall. Graveside services will be held Monday, November 13th at Mt. Robert Szyniszewski

Robert Szyniszewski, 68, of Portage, MI, passed away November 1, 2023, in his home after some time under hospice care. Robert was born on October 31, 1955, to Harry and Jane (Antczak) Szyniszewski of Detroit, MI. He graduated from St. Florian's High School in Hamtramck, MI in 1973. After graduating, he began in sales, working a majority of his career for CSC and Frost, Inc. On March 11, 1978, he was married to Joann Berent. Together they have 2 children, Keith and Lisa. Their family lived in Walled Lake for 16 years before eventually settling in Portage. Robert and Joann enjoyed time as members of the Eagle's Lodge FOE. You could often find Robert spending his days out on the golf course or on the lake fishing. He was a Detroit Tigers fan and always treasured attending games with his family to cheer them on. He found solace in bird watching, building puzzles and listening to music. Robert was preceded in death by his parents and his older brother, Harry Szyniszewski. He is loved and survived by his wife, Joann Szyniszewski; his children: Keith (Sara) Szyniszewski and Lisa (Rex) Trott; his grandchildren: Mason, Tanner, Camryn, and Tyson; his sisters: Beverly Bauser, Marilyn Hess, Pamela Marone, Camilla (Russ) Peabody, and Arlette (Al) Papcun; his sister-in-law Judy Szyniszewski; and many nieces and nephews. Thomas "Tom" Goddard age 81, of Scotts, Michigan, passed away on Friday, October 13, 2023. Tom was born on February 24, 2023, in Lansing, Michigan to the late Roscoe Wheelock and Grace Alice (Rose) Goddard Tom worked for General Motors Truck and Bus for 34 years. He loved to serve the Lord and serve others. He volunteered at The Bridge and Kalamazoo Gospel Mission. He was a member of the Gideons International. Tom is survived by his wife, Joan (Springer) Goddard, whom he married in 1965. Children: Lori Franklin (Kevin), Heather McAfee (Eric), Michael Goddard (Kirsten), and Scott Goddard (Kelly). Grandchildren: Logan Wolf (Gina), Megan Farquhar (Ryan), Emily Sayvone (Dominic), Tristan McAfee (Megan), Morgan Barbosa (Jonathan), Jack Goddard, Benjamin Goddard, Abigail Goddard, Ethan Goddard, Ty Goddard and Sara Garcia. Sandra K. (Schreuder) Szymczak of Portage, Michigan passed away on Sunday, October 15, 2023, at the age of 72. Sandra was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan on April 27, 1951, to the late Donald and Joyce (Denner) Schreuder. Sandra was married to LeRoy "Roy" Szymczak until his passing in 2016. In 1969, Sandra graduated from Portage Northern High School. She would eventually dedicate 15 years to, and retire from, Kalamazoo County Friend of the Court. Sandra and Roy were long time residents of Schoolcraft, Michigan. After Roy's passing, Sandra relocated to Portage where she would be closer to her family. Sandra enjoyed yardwork and gardening, but more than anything, she cherished time spent with her friends and family - especially if that time included pizza from Bimbo's Pizza. Sandra could often be found supporting her nieces and nephews at swim meets, soccer games, and football games. Sandra is survived by her sister, Lisa (Bob) Bonnema; brother-in-law, Rick Lingbeek; nieces and nephews, Benjamin (Shanna) Herson, Todd (Julie) Lingbeek, Mark Lingbeek, Erica Bonnema, and Ashley (Brandon) Tykoski; and many beloved grandnieces and grandnephews. Preceding Sandra in death were her husband, Roy Szymczak; parents, Donald and Joyce Schreuder; and sisters, Donna Lingbeek, Cathy (Dave) Herson, and Sue Schreuder. Benjamin was employed at the Battle Creek Veteran's Medical Center for 2o years and at Clark Equipment for 25 years. He was a member of Jehovah Witness Kingdom Hall of Kalamazoo. Douglas Gordon Beak passed away Wednesday, September 13, 2023, at the age of 81. Born in Janesville, Wisconsin on December 7, 1941, to the late Douglas George and Verle (Mann) Beak. He married Joyce Stoodt in Plymouth, Ohio on July 21, 1963. After serving his country in the United States Navy, Doug went on to a career as a computer technician for IBM. He enjoyed computers and reading, often reading the same books multiple times. Doug is survived by his loving wife, Joyce Beak; sons, Jeff (Cindy) Beak and Douglas (Stephanie) Beak; 3 grandchildren, Aislinn, Delaney, and Jaidan; 5 siblings, Victoria Boehm, Judith Kautz, Kristine Dean, Kimberly (Kenneth) Mohrbacher, and Steven (Sandi) Beak; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Passed away Tuesday morning, August 29, 2023. Dawn was born February 20, 1957 in Kalamazoo the daughter James and Barbara (Mitchell) Swander. Dawn graduated from Portage Central High school in 1975. Dawn worked at Liner Health Products and then on to Pfizer where she retired as a Logistic Operator in 2020. Dawn loved her family and friends. She was kind and compassionate, and very calm and patient with a wild fun side. She enjoyed gardening and all things beautiful, especially the color purple. Dawn looked forward to camping and fishing with her husband (Ron) and bonfires with friends and her family. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and supporting them in all their sports and activities and anything they were involved in. Dawn was an exceptional Mother, daughter, sister and Friend. She will be greatly missed On September 19, 1975 Dawn was united in marriage to her loving husband, Ronald Fisher, who preceded her in death on February 26, 2022. She was also preceded in death by her parents; brother, Jim Swander; and brothers-in-law, Scott Taylor and Rodney Fisher. She is survived by her children, Nickole (Tim) Johnson, Eric (Stephanie) Fisher; 3 grandchildren, Rylee and McKenna Johnson, Sloan Fisher; brother and sisters, David (Glenda) Swander, Sharon Rodimer, Deb Taylor; and several nieces and nephews.
