"Leonor Gomez Parra (June 3, 1932 - October 29, 2023) Leonor Gomez Parra, 91, of Lilburn, Georgia passed away on October 29th, 2023. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Abelardo Parra, her daughters, Marcia Parra Kucaba (Walter Kucaba) and Sylvia Lucia Parra (Matthew Ayres), and her grandchildren Victoria Marie Kucaba, Patrick Abel Kucaba, Abel Matthew Ayres and Cecilia Eleanor Ayres. Leonor was born in Zapatoca, Colombia to Victoria and Luis Gomez, the 8th of 13 children. She immigrated to the United States in 1964, knowing only one family member in town and speaking English as a second language. She settled in Atlanta, Georgia and went to work at Oxford Industries. Soon after, Abel followed her to America, and in 1968 they were married in a small Catholic ceremony with three witnesses and simple gold bands. Leonor and Abel's first daughter, Marcia, was born in 1971, followed by her sister, Sylvia, 13 months later. Since that time, Leonor devoted herself entirely to the care and education of her two daughters. She taught them, and many of their friends, the proper pronunciation for the names of several Latin American players on her favorite baseball team, the Atlanta Braves. She offered after school snacks and a welcoming home for the girls and their friends, and taught them all the importance of good posture. Leonor embraced all of the American traditions and was at every swim meet, football game, and cheerleading competition. She was a talented seamstress, a reluctant cook, and a meticulous accountant who knew how to keep a budget and run a household. But most of all, Leonor had a fierce love and loyalty for her family and a quiet grit and determination to make sure her daughters took advantage of all of the opportunities afforded to them by her new, adopted country. Leonor never pressed her daughters for marriage or grandchildren, always encouraging them to focus on their education and careers. When her first grandchild was born in 2004, she almost surprised the family with her excitement and enthusiasm for the next generation, a pelirroja just like her father. She enjoyed her grandchildren immensely, and despite her fading memory, continued to be at the center of family gatherings, with her beloved Abel by her side. To the end, Leonor gave glimpses of her sharp wit and dry sense of humor. When she finally succumbed to her failing physical body, it was quietly and without a fuss, as she had lived her entire life. Leonor's legacy is one of bravery, quiet confidence and resilience that will live on in her family. We remember her with love, celebrate a life well lived and trust she is a much better placed, healed and made whole. A private family mass and celebration of life will be held in early 2024.
