Lifelong resident of Wanchese- Major Edward Curles was called home to be with the Lord September 9, 2023 in Nags Head. He was 84 years old. Born March 27, 1939 in Duck, NC, Major was the son of Jackson Curles and Fannie Rodgers Curles both deceased. Major's life was also impacted by the loss of his son, James "Jimmy" Curles; his four brothers, Alonzo Curles, Jack Curles, Garfield "G. C. " Curles, and Aldridge "Poss" Curles; and three sisters, Dora Hines, Josephine McDonald, and Gladys White. Major was a devoted family man and successful commercial fisherman who leaves behind numerous relatives and friends to celebrate his long life. They include his wife, Eleanor "Lena" Gallop Curles; two daughters, Sherri Butcher (Jody) and Sandy Midgett (Mike); one son, Shawn Curles (Audrey); three grandchildren, Kaitlyn Midgett, Finn Curles, and Isla Curles, and a host of other relatives and family friends. The Curles family is honoring Major's directives for a simple, strictly private burial. The family will hold a memorial gathering in the future. Manteo- Eugene Robinson Austin, affectionately known as "Buddy" age 76, passed away in Nags Head November 29, 2023. He served his country proudly and bravely as a veteran of the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. Eugene "Buddy" ministered through music: from eastern North Carolina to Virginia. His musical gifts and organizational skills led Buddy to envision and create the Manteo Male Chorus, the Manteo Community Choir, the Columbia Community Choir, and several other musical collaborations. Buddy's performances were highly regarded by other famous musicians near and far. Buddy is a humble gift to the body of Christ. He was preceded in death by his parents Clarence and Lillian Meekins Austin; his long-time friend Carole Scott; his niece Tanaya Farrow, and his nephew Jamie Farrow. Eugene R. Austin leaves to cherish his memory three sisters, Bessie Farrow, Charleen Mathews (Larry), Sally Simmons (Eddie); one aunt, Pensecola McClease; four nieces Rhonda Carver, Carla Beale (Dwayne), Davina Austin, and Latora Cason (H. Patrick); two nephews, Travis Mathews and Eddie Simmons, Jr. ; and a host of great nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Eugene's passing is also grieved by his loyal friends and long-time employers, Betsy Seawell and partner, Kerry Landherr and the Islander Motel family. Family and friends may view from 6 pm to 8 pm at Manteo Assembly Church Friday December 8, 2023. The funeral will be held Saturday December 9, 2023 at 1 pm at Manteo Assembly Church. Reverend T. J. Etheridge will officiate. Immediately following the funeral, the burial with military honors will be held at historic Haven Creek Cemetery in Manteo. Susan Dail Machen-Gentry of Nags Head, NC passed away peacefully on October 30, 2023, from natural causes at ECU Medical Center in Greenville, NC. She was surrounded by her husband and girls. Susi leaves to cherish her memory; her loving husband, Robert "Bobby" Gentry; her two girls, Sarah Clark (Freddy) and Andrea Lambert (Dave); grandchildren, Cameron, Savannah, Garrett, and Collin; and pet her children- Sochi and Sandi. Susie is also survived by her mother, Bettye Machen; her sister, Betsy Carmark (Mark); her brother, Phil Machen (Patti); and several cousins, nieces, and nephews. She was predeceased by her father, Charles Philip Machen. Susi was a Virginia Beach native who graduated from Cox High School and was a long-term employee of Fotomat and a local Chiropractic practice in Virginia Beach. She and Bobby relocated to Nags Head in 2007, where she volunteered with Nags Head Elementary School and was an active Outer Banks Presbyterian Church choir member. Susi was an amazing woman who loved her family deeply and was always eager to help those around her. She was the best friend of everyone she knew and lit up any room with her smile and kindness. She will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. A celebration of life will be held in the coming weeks. Salina Lynn Moose, 59, of Nags Head, NC, courageously battled ovarian cancer before she passed away September 19, 2023 at her home. She was born on March 11, 1964, in Statesville, NC. Salina graduated from West Iredell High School in 1982 and graduated from Mitchell Community College with a BA degree. Salina married Michelle R. Miller on October 15, 2016, on the beach in Nags Head, NC. Salina had an 18-year career at Hunt Bienfang Corp in Statesville, NC. For three years, she worked as an Operations Manager for Sound Feet Shoes in Nags Head, NC. Salina worked at Kitty Hawk Kites as a store manager in Nags Head, NC, and as a warehouse manager in Kill Devil Hills, NC, for almost 18 years. She is predeceased by her father, Kenneth Jack Moose, and her mother, Margaret Theresa Brown Moose, her sister, Lisa Money, and brother-in-law, Tim Williams. Survivors in addition to her wife, Michelle Miller include her son, Kolten D. Miller (age 13), of the residence; a sister, Rhona L. Williams of Statesville, NC; and three nieces and a nephew also of Statesville, NC (Jennifer Ayers, Sarah Davidson, Anna Money and Chris Bolick. ) Also surviving is Salina's brother-in-law, Robert Money; and uncles Lannie Brown (Jean) of Troutman, NC, and Bobby Moose of Loray, NC, as well as many cousins. Salina has many friends and family members that she loved and cherished. She felt lucky to have had the time to visit with many of them and tell them what they meant to her before she passed. If you knew Salina, you know she had impeccable timing with her jokes. She was very witty and had a wonderful, dry sense of humor. She loved to go to the beach at Pea Island on the Outer Banks and shoot hoops with her son--really doing anything with him as he was the center of her universe. She had a fierce work ethic. Salina was incredibly strong during her fight with ovarian cancer for seven years. Michelle is honoring Salina's directives for cremation. No memorial services are planned, but a celebration of Salina's life will be held at a later date.
