Martha Edwards
Age - 80
November 8, 2023
Martha "Jean" Edwards completed her earthly duties and ascended to heaven to watch over her family from above on the evening of November 3, 2023. She was born March 27, 1943 to two young parents James Edwards and Dorothy (Jolly), Her parents faced the uncertainty of a world at war, threw caution to the wind and started a family of four children, the eldest being Jean, then Ronald James of Slaton TX, Dorothy Gale (Haynes) of Ruidoso Downs, NM and Katherine Louise (Fortier) of San Angelo, TX. On a small plot of land in Slaton Texas, James built a house, planted a field of cotton and worked at the family cement business while Dorothy built a home. Jean had plenty of "not-so-wonderful stories" of having to pick that cotton after school for sure! She was proud of that hard work though, crediting it for instilling a strong work ethic and sense of duty which contributed to her many life successes. Over the next 80 years Jean cobbled together a rich and rewarding life. Starting with charming and colorful memories she and her siblings created on "Edwards Road" (which was really 7th St), where they and a herd of cousins burned up the path to "Granny and Grandpa"s" lovely rock house on the corner. . . and were spoiled. It stood next to the Edwards cement company which sustained multiple generations for more than 100 years. She married, then raised three children in Victoria, TX, Randy Galneau, Lisa Galneau and Tracy (Bean). She was a successful business executive at CP&L that took her to Harlingen, Texas where she earned her Bachelor's degree at the University of Texas at Brownsville, and finally to Goliad, Texas - a town that reminded her of Slaton and she often said gave her the happiest years of her life. In Goliad she got to be a real "Granny Jean" (GJ) to the love of her life Brynna Galneau. In Goliad she also developed a vibrant social circle of wonderful people, bridge parties, weekly dominoes at Harry's house, ice cream socials at the Senior Center, cards, and the occasional "cut throat" poker game if her cherished grandsons Brian Galneau of San Antonio, TX and Connor Galneau of Marietta, GA were in town. She was so proud of her son Randy Galneau's two boys she called "movie stars". Well, she called all her grandkids that. She had a special place in her heart for the beautiful and strong women she forged, imparting strength and confidence often reminding them that they "stand on the shoulders of giants" that came before them. She was so proud of her daughters Tracy Bean of Pensacola, FL and Lisa Galneau and her "easy to love" daughter-in-law Tracy (Mize) who both live in Goliad. She was in awe of the accomplishments, poise and grace of her granddaughter Meagan Bean of Savannah, GA,And then there's the "GJ and Brynna Mutual Admiration Society". . . they were, and always will be, "Best Friends" who have shared tea parties, dress up, Old Maid, Memory (Brynna always won), love, laughs and tears. Together they created an unending repertoire of stories, jokes and simply beautiful, loving memories that out live her through those of us left to tell them. . . and we will. She loved her house, her yard, plays at the Shiner Playhouse, the annual hummingbirds, Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune of course and her new car. Above all though, she loves "Her People" and we love her too. Jean was preceded in death by her father James, mother Dorothy, and her son Randy and is survived by her daughters Lisa Galneau, Tracy Bean and Tracy (Mize) Galneau, grandsons Brian and Connor Galneau, granddaughters Meagan Bean and Brynna Galneau, She is also survived by her siblings Ronnie Edwards, Kathy Fortier and Gale Haynes and nephews Collin and Lanny Joe Edwards, Tad Haynes and Jason and Cody Blaylock and three great grandchildren. A Memorial Service to Celebrate the life of Martha will be Wednesday, November 15, 2023 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Grace Funeral Home, 214 N. Market St. , Goliad, Texas.
