Dora Irene (Burkett) Harden of Brazil, passed away on February 24, 2024 at Clay County Hospital. She was born in Freedom, In. on May 26, 1932, the daughter of Charles Burkett, and Eva (Hockman) Burkett.She graduated from Freedom High School in 1950.She married Max D. Harden on May 27, 1950. They had three children Ronald(Rose) Harden, John Harden, and Denise(Keith) Mishler. They made their home in Bowling Green, then moved their family to Brazil.She greatly enjoyed watching her grandchildren play baseball, basketball, and soccer. Her children, and grandchildren will cherish her memory.Survivors include daughter Denise(Keith) Mishler, daughter in law Rose Harden.Grandchildren Mark(Jaime) Harden, Michelle Harden-Price, Cassie Zentko, and Tony(Holly) Harden.Great-grandchildren Jacob Harden, Kennady Harden, Dylan Zentko, Christian Price, Max Harden, and Nolan Harden.Sibling Myrna Dyer and several nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Max, sons Ronald Harden, and John Harden.Siblings Lena Phillips, Orval Burkett, Cora Rawley, Celesta Summerlot, Byron Burkett, Della Carpenter, Emma Dayhuff, Orris Burkett, Immogene Herrington, her twin Lora Halfhill, Geraldine Keith, Danny Burkett.Per her request, she was laid to rest in a private graveside service with immediate family at Clearview Cemetery in Brazil.

Janelle Faythe Nicoson, 76, passed away February 26, 2024. Janelle was born to the late Sidney “Ralph” and Mildred June (Brammer) Nicoson in Brazil on June 1, 1947.Janelle grew up on a farm in southern Clay County with three brothers. She attended Ashboro Elementary, Clay City Jr. and Sr. High School, Hillsboro High School in Tampa, Florida and Berkley High School in Berkley, Michigan where she graduated from. Janelle had an honorable discharge from the United States Women’s Marine Corp. and the Indiana National Guard. She worked for P.R. Mallory, Peabody Co., and Hercules Corp. Janelle was a member of the United Mineworkers of America and United Autoworkers of America. She was a member of The Order of Eastern Star in Brazil. She enjoyed basketball, football, baseball, boxing, and NASCAR racing. She also liked swimming, golf, and playing card games. She loved and enjoyed playing with her son and grandchildren, and their friends as they grew up. Later in life when her family grew, she loved spending time with her great grandchildren. Janelle was loved for one of her “talks” and always lending a listening ear.Janelle also had a namesake, Janelle Garrison.Janelle is preceded in death by her grandsons, Mitchell Price, and Michael Nicoson, a nephew, Jason Nicoson, and a niece Tara Nicoson.Janelle is survived by her son, Timothy M. Nicoson. Laura Waugh, the daughter that she never had, her grandchildren, Nicole Riggen (Dwight), Derek Nicoson (Debrenne), and Erica Pittsford, great grandchildren, Wyatt, Abram, Brogyn, Calin, and Kymber Ann, brothers, Prentice J. Nicoson (Mary), Jeffrey R. Nicoson (Sandy), and John H. Nicoson. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews: Joel, Jared, Scott, Candice, and Greg.“Love many, trust few, always paddle your own canoe.”Private graveside services will be held at Clearview Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held June 1st at Forest Park with more details to come in the future.

He graduated from Northview High School with the class of 1994. Ruth E. Moss, 97, passed away Thursday, February 22, 2024 at her home. She was born on November 27, 1927, the sixth out of eight children to the late Edward and Mabel (Reichert) Herr. Ruth graduated from Ball Township School, and attended Nursing School at Memorial Hospital in Springfield, Illinois. She married Dr. Harlan Moss on August 14, 1949, together they operated a medical practice before she retired in 1994 after 30 years of caring for others. In her free time she enjoyed working crossword puzzles, reading, camping, and doing crafts especially embroidery, knitting, and sewing. She was preceded in death by her husband; son, Patrick Moss; brothers, Charles, Lee, Harold and Fred Herr; sisters, Margaret Herr, Dorothy Cinotto and Betty Cheek. She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Lois Moss of Center Point, as well as several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday, February 26, 2024 at Moore Funeral Home in Brazil with burial to follow at Ashboro Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1:00 P.M. until the time of service on Monday.

Margaret worked as a secretary for State Farm Insurance for many years.Margaret enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandkids, watching soap operas, Pacers, Colts and NASCAR, and Dirt Track Racing. Charles C. Price passed away the evening of February 17, 2024, at the Villas of Hollybrook, Brazil, Indiana. Born January 15, 1932, he was the son of Edward “Dick” and Catherine Bridgewater Price. He graduated from Brazil High School in 1949.Charlie was raised on a dairy farm and delivered milk as a young man. He later became a truck driver for Shwerman and reached the Million Mile Safe Driving milestone. He was a member of the Teamsters Union. Also, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. In addition, he was a member of the Masons for many years.He was known as Chuck as a young man and while married to his first wife Paulina (Polly) Foxworthy, whom he married in May of 1960. In retirement, Chuck and Polly lived for several years in Fort Myers, Florida.Following Polly’s death in May of 1998, Charlie returned to live in Indiana. He married Jo Ann Terril Pell in February of 2000. Charlie and Jo Ann enjoyed traveling to Florida for part of the winter months for several years.Charlie was a member of the Fairview Christian Church.Preceding Charlie in death were his parents, his wives, and his brothers Don Price and Bob Price.He is survived by nephews Troy Price, Brian Price, and Dean Price and nieces Cathy Coleman and Donna Price as well as his sister-in-law Dee Price. His step-daughters Becky (Jim) Clausen and Mindy (Rick) Godsey also survive as do great-nieces and great-nephews and step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.Private graveside services will be held. Interment will be at Summit Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Fairview Christian Church.

Jon R. Girton, 83, passed away February 13, 2024. Jon was born to the late Richard and Doris (LaBier) Girton on March 14, 1940 in Brazil.Jon graduated from Brazil High School in 1958. On October 1, 1960, Jon married the love of his life, Mary Jane Girton. She preceded him in death in 2017. Jon worked various jobs throughout his life, most involving heavy equipment. Jon enjoyed building Legos, watching movies, and watching sports.Jon is preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Mary Jane.Jon is survived by his three sons, Kevin Girton (Cathy), Steve Girton (Susan), and Brad Girton (Kourtney), grandchildren, Kerri Keyt, Kyle Girton, Kristin Frey, Sierra Girton, and Michael Hughes, four great grandchildren, a brother-in-law Hugh Swartz and a sister-in-law, Shirley Parr.Private family gravesides services will be held.

Nancy Jeanne Courtney (McGuire) passed away at the age of 92 on January 31, 2024 at Hutsonwood in Brazil, Indiana. Born July 31, 1931 in Liberal, Kansas to Donald McGuire and Jeanne Montaldo. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Ralph Courtney. Nancy is survived by two daughters, Karen Courtney of Terre Haute, IN and Mary Rose Tener (Tom) of Newburg, Indiana. Nancy received her Bachelors of Science degree from Indiana State Teachers College (kna Indiana State University). She worked at the Instructional Materials Center at the Vigo County School Corporation for many years and retired from there. She was a long-time member of the St. Benedict Catholic Church and a member of the Alter Society and Soup Kitchen volunteer for many years. Betty June Fields, 90, passed away Monday, February 5, 2024 at her home in Brazil. She was born on June 12, 1933 in Brazil, Indiana to the late Leo Solomon-Medaugh and Audrey L. (Williams) Medaugh. Betty attended Brazil High School and worked as in housekeeping at several motels and nursing homes, as well as working for Columbia House Records. In her free time she loved to sing karaoke, and watching television. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vention Fields; brother, Gary Medaugh; sisters, Winifred Silvers and Patricia Godsey; as well as her grandson, Nathan LeLoop. Survivors include her sons, Steven and Jeffrey Rogers; Sandra Robertson and Lori (Gary) Leloop; sisters, Beverly Mills and Leatta Godsey; seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces, nephews and other extended family. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Friday, February 9, 2024 at Moore Funeral Home in Brazil with burial to follow at Bee Ridge Cemetery. The family will accept friends for visitation on Friday from 11:00 A.M. until the time of service.

Modesitt, 85, of Brazil, Indiana, passed away unexpectedly, on January 31, 2024, at his home.Ed was born on January 14, 1939, in Spencer, Indiana, the son of William and Eunice (Crosley) Modesitt. He graduated from Brazil High School with the class of 1957. He worked at Arketex in Brazil and CBS Records, and retired from AET (Hercules) as a machinist.He enjoyed fishing, mushroom hunting, spending time at the family cabin, and was talented with building projects in his garage over the years. He was actively involved with the Clay County Historical Society, and was a board member. He and Fredia enjoyed their many trips to Branson, Missouri, and had many wonderful memories.Ed was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years Fredia Modesitt, Infant daughter Lana K. Modesitt; parents: William and Eunice Modesitt; brother John Modesitt; and a sister Sue (Modesitt) Withers.Ed is survived by his two sons: Paul Modesitt and wife Debbie of Brazil, Indiana and Ronald “Andy” Modesitt and wife Teresa of New Richmond, Indiana; brother Don Modesitt and wife Mary of Brazil; sister-in-law Mary Jane Alsip, of Brazil; grandchildren: Kelsey Tincher (Cameron), of Fillmore; Taylor Thomas (Michael) of Crawfordsville, and Garrett Modesitt (Danielle) of Alabama; he was “Pops” to his great-grandchildren: Addison and Easton Tincher and Benjamin Thomas as well as several extended family members.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Clay County Historical Society 100 East National Ave. Brazil, Indiana 47834.Visitation will be at Lawson-Miller Chapel 1702 E.
