Wanda Mae Humphrey Parker

location-icon

Durham, NC

Mrs. Wanda Mae Humphrey Parker, 85, died peacefully on Monday, February, 26, 2024, at her home in Durham, N.C.Mrs. Parker’s story began February 16, 1939, in Onslow County, a little crossroads called Pumpkin Center near Jacksonville, N.C. Her parents, the late Wilbert Lee Humphrey and Lillian Joyce Barefoot raised 5 boys and one girl on a tobacco farm. Early in her youth, her mother moved the family to Wilmington where Wanda embraced a lifelong love of the beach and developed the sassy, fun-loving personality that made her so adored by friends and family. She often reminded people that she was the only sister of five rambunctious brothers. She graduated from New Hanover High School where she met and married the love of her life, Carl Dennis Parker, Jr. They loved singing in the choir at Oak Grove Presbyterian Church and married there. This little church was founded in Carl’s mother’s home and was a beloved meeting place.During their 65 years together, the two lived in Wilmington before settling in Durham in 1975. There they raised a family, opening their home to become the hangout for their daughter’s and son’s neighborhood friends. She never knew a stranger, making warm lifelong friendships through church and community at every stage of her life. When the kids were in high school, she enjoyed moving into the workforce, serving for 12 years as a library assistant for IBM. After retirement, she viewed it as a great blessing to play an active role in the lives of her four beloved grandchildren.Mrs. Parker’s faith was important to her at every stage of her life, and she lived it fully in all her interactions. A naturally caring person, she reached out to those in need with a word of advice, a caring hug, or a gift of time. She and her husband sang in their church choirs for almost 50 years. She appreciated God’s gifts in nature, embracing her garden and tending daily to her flowers and plants.Though small in stature, Mrs. Parker seemed to always be in control and was lovingly nicknamed The Little Boss. Throughout her life, she liked to dress up, always with perfect make up and pretty jewelry. She maintained precious relationships with friends and family, enjoying long talks as she sipped a glass of Duplin red wine and managing to always have the last word.In addition to Carl, her husband of 65 years, Mrs. Parker is survived by her daughter Annette Adkins and husband, Doug of Durham; son Michael Parker and wife, Melanie of Knightdale, grandchildren Annalee Adkins and Sarah, Christopher and Kristina Parker, brothers Gene Humphrey of Leland and Franklin Humphrey of Wilmington, and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Parker was preceded in death by her brothers, Charles Humphrey, Vance Humphrey and Willie Humphrey. Nearly all had a chance to spend time with her over the final month of her life, cherishing a long goodbye to this very special woman. In addition to her family, she was loved and deeply cared for by her loyal family of caregivers: Teresa Littiken, April Durham, her husband Brian, daughter Kendaleah, daughter Taylor Walker, son Braxton Walker. Niece, Alissa Sanchez. Taylor’s daughter, Ava (5) was also a delightful, energizing blessing to each day.Flowers are acceptable, or contributions may be made in Mrs. Parker’s memory to:Duke Dementia Family Support Programdukefamilysupport.org,Box 3600 DUMCDurham, NC 27710Duke HomeCare & Hospicehttps://www.gifts.duke.edu4321 Medical Park Drive Suite 101Durham, NC 27704
