Luther "Ed" Burns, 97, of Madison, WV passed away October 4, 2023 surrounded by loved ones, he was escorted by angels into the arms of God forever to be with the Lord and his family. Born on October 29, 1925 in Frog Alley, Barrett, WV to the late Raymond L. and Drusia B. Wallace Burns and later in life moving to Cazy, WV where he went to school at Cazy Grade School and later to Van High School. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife Emma F. Burns; brothers Paul, Harold, James, and Woodrow Burns; and sister Norma J. Burns Cabell. He is survived by his loving children, daughter, Frances (Danny) Hager of Quinland; son, Eddie L. (Opal) Burns of Uneeda, Rocky (Patricia) Burns of Madison, and Scotty D. Burns of Quinland; six grandchildren, Shane (Reneé) Hager of Julian, Casey (Kelly) Hager of Sod, Misty (Frankie) Cook of Foster, Kristin Burns of Quinland, Rocky (Carrie) Burns of Prosperity, SC, and Jennifer Ann Agosti of West Columbia, WV. Ed was much loved and will be missed by a surviving host of family and friends. He was a World War II US Navy Veteran and after his stint in the military, he returned home to continue his lifelong career as a coal miner. In 1982 he proudly became a member of the Quinland Church of Christ. Our family extends our heartfelt thanks to everyone for their kindness shown during these difficult times. Services will be 2 p. m. Sunday, October 8, 2023 at Handley Funeral Home in Danville, WV with ministers Tim Bailey and Mike Green officiating. Burial will follow at Family Gardens on Low Gap Rd. , Madison, WV. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Franklin "Mark" Kirk, 63, of Bloomingrose, WV went home to be with his Lord on December 1, 2023 after a long illness. Mark was the son of the late Nellie Morris and Frank Kirk. He was also preceded in death by his sister Lisa Lynne Kirk; grandparents; and numerous aunts and uncles. Surviving is his beloved sister, Kim Kirk of Bloomingrose; aunt, Pamela Perdue (Charles), special cousins, Angel Adkins and Chris Perdue, Esther Pettry and Lydia Thibodaux whom Mark was like a brother too. ; special friends, Ordy, Frank, AJ, and Kevin; and his beloved church family. A special mention to his cat, Buddy, that gave him great joy. Mark was a 1978 graduate of Sherman High School. He retired from Kroger in Kanawha City. He also worked at Walker Machinery, Walmart, Midtown Dental and was a chef at the Ramada Inn. He was a member of the Racine United Methodist Church. He loved his church and his church family. Mark loved sports. He especially loved his Cincinnati Reds and Miami Dolphins. He also loved bowling and was in a league for many years. He also loved visiting the nursing home in Danville to see his beloved Granny Grump. While it is with heavy hearts we mark the passing of his life, we are comforted to know that he has been greeted by a mother, father, sister and his beloved dog Lucy who passed before him. But more importantly, by the Lord. Service will be 2 p. m. Monday, December 4th at the Racine United Methodist Church at Racine with Pastor Daniel Light officiating. IN LOVING MEMORY Cathy Atkins Bailey, 1953-2023, November 26th, 1:39am. Cathy was born on November 15, 1953 to Charles and AnnahGay Atkins in Ravenswood, West Virginia. She was a kind, caring, and giving person who always put the needs of her family and friends before herself. Cathy was a strong woman who faced every challenge in life with courage and dignity. She was a source of inspiration to all who met her. Cathy will be deeply missed by everyone whose lives she has touched. Cathy was a woman of strong faith and instilled the practice of importance of family, hard work and doing what is right in her children. She was preceded in death by her parents Charles and AnnahGay Atkins, her husband Gerald Bailey, Sister Pam Callahan, and her son Bo Smith. She is survived by her brother and sisters, Charles Atkins II, Reida Hamilton, Rhonda Childers, and Lynn Atkins, children, Ericka Carrick, Richard Christian, and Tessie Rambo, Grandchildren Rico, Brandon, Rodney, Kyrie, Elizabeth, Taylor, Shelby, JJ, Devin, Jacob, Destiny, and Brent. Great Grandchildren Audrina, Isabella, Benjamin, Kayia, Adrian, Amora, Malachi, Roman, and Kinsley. The funeral service will be held at Handley Funeral home on Friday December 1 at 2:00 P. M. Family viewing begins at 12:30 P. M. for family and 1:00 P. M for friends. Mother, you will always be in our hearts and we will never forget you. We love you so much. Rest in peace. Jean Javins Pratt Walton, 93, of Charleston, WV passed away into the arms of her Lord and Savior on November 22, 2023, after an extended illness. She was born and raised in Foster, WV and was a graduate of Scott High School. She lived at Lippert Terrace in Kanawha City for 30 plus years and was a long-time member of Kanawha City Church of Christ where she was involved in many mission trips to Nicaragua. She was a Licensed Practical Nurse having worked at Heartland, CAMC General, Dr. Hash and as a private duty nurse while being an officer for the WV LPN Association. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Selina Chapter #81 at Malden. She had many interests and hobbies such as Red Hats, AARP Health Talents, Charleston Housing, Book Club, Computer Clerk, bowling, crafts, sewing, crocheting, quilting, and gardening. She loved the outdoors and her favorite place to go was Camp (on the river). She was preceded in death by her parents Carl A. and Maymie Smith Javins; brothers Cue and Carl E. Javins; sisters Mary Ann Halstead and Peggy Barker; and daughter-in-law Karen Darnell Pratt. Surviving Jean is her son Steve Pratt (Becky) of Foster; daughter Debbie Keeney (Joe Bill) of Elkview; grandchildren Kelli Pratt Show (Greg), Brian Keeney (Bridgette), and Jodie Keeney Henson (R. D. ); two great grandchildren Claire and Sadie Henson; sister Juanita Chambers (Dennis); and brother Larry Javins. Earl Eugene Balentine, 76, of Quinland, WV departed this world to be with his Heavenly Father on November 16, 2023, peacefully surrounded by his loved ones after fighting a long illness. Earl was the son of the late Paul and Georgie Balentine of Logan, WV. He was also preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, Webb, Paul, Dale, Rush, Jeff, Sue, Florence, Laurie and Renine. Earl was a member of the Griffiths Branch Church of Christ of Uneeda, WV for over ten years. He was a retired coal miner from Omar Mining where he served 30 plus years. He loved spending time with family and friends. He always found a way to make you laugh with one of his many jokes. He also adored his lawnmower and gravely. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Joyce Ann Balentine; sons, Willie Paul Balentine of Hurricane, WV and Steven (Amber) Balentine of Foster, WV; daughter, Kayla (Robert) Wooding of Charleston, WV; grandchildren, Megan Balentine of South Charleston, Morgan (Andrew) Javins of South Madison, WV, Hannah (Chase) Rittenhouse of Milton, Cory Balentine of Foster and Alyssa Balentine of Hurricane, WV; great grandchildren, Paisley Coffman, Natalie Burgess and Jameson Javins; and sister, Faye Tackett of Logan, WV; plus a host of family and friends. Special thanks to our sister-in-law, Cheryl Price of Quinland, WV for all her dedication and loving care over all the years.
