Leslie Talley

Leslie R. Talley, 91, of Cost, passed away Tuesday, November 21, 2023. Les was born on December 13, 1931 in San Antonio, Texas, to Leslie Erven and Alva Mae Caraway Talley. Les was a member of the Abiding Word Lutheran Church in Gonzales, where he and his wife, Helen, were founding members. Les graduated from Breckenridge High School in 1949. Following graduation, he enrolled at Southwest Texas State Teacher's College in San Marcos. He was a member of both the basketball and tennis teams. While at Southwest Texas, he met the love of his life, Helen Thieme, on the tennis court. He graduated in 1953, with a B. S. in Education. In 1957 he continued his education, graduating with a Masters Degree in Administration. Les and Helen were married on May 25, 1952, in Cuero, Texas. Both were hired to teach in the Clear Creek ISD in September of 1953. In June of 1954, Les, a member of the Army Reserve, was called to active duty in the Korean Conflict. He was assigned to the army base in Kaiserslautern, Germany as a dental assistant. Les and Helen were stationed in Germany until April of 1956. Helen said that "Les' Germany assignment was certainly a most enjoyable Army Tour of Duty. " Upon discharge, they returned to League City and Clear Creek ISD to continue their careers as educators. Les thoroughly enjoyed teaching and coaching. In 1963 he was the assistant coach when the Clear Creek High School boys' basketball team won the 3A State Basketball Championship. In 1965, Les became the principal of Edward H. White Elementary School in El Lago, Texas. He remained there as principal until his retirement in June 1992. His 27 years at Ed White Elementary were probably his most rewarding years spent in education. Les was surrounded by dedicated teachers, cooperative parents, and great students; and they became his school family. Upon retirement the street in front of the school was renamed as "Les Talley Drive" in his honor. Following retirement, Les and Helen settled in Cost, Texas, where they loved spending time on their ranch with family and friends. Les is survived by his beloved wife of 71 years, Helen Talley; his three children and their families: Mike Talley and wife, Darla, of Duncanville, Texas; Gary Talley and wife, Joy, of Corpus Christi, Texas; and Nancy Davison and husband, Charles, of Rockwall Texas. He is blessed with 7 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Jack Talley. Les will be remembered as a kind and generous husband, father, grandpa and friend. He will be greatly missed by all. The family will receive friends for visitation, from 5 pm to 7 pm on Friday, November 24, 2023, at Seydler-Hill Funeral Home in Gonzales, Texas. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 25, 2023, at 10 am, at the Abiding Word Lutheran Church in Gonzales, Texas. Interment will follow at the Odd-Fellows Cemetery in Gonzales, Texas. Stanley Bias

Age - 75

Stanley Lewis Bias, 75, of Gonzales, went home to the arms of his precious Lord and Savior, November 21, 2023 after a 3-year battle with pancreatic cancer. Stan was born in Bakersfield, CA on November 21, 1948 to MT Bias and Dessie Samples. After the death of his dad, the family moved to Stratford, TX. He was drafted into the US Army and served in Vietnam from 1968 to 1969. While serving he also earned his GED. Stan married his soul mate Jeannie Long on December 31, 1977 in Guymon, OK and moved to Dumas, TX. Stan made a career working for the railroad. He held multiple positions over the years working for the Rock Island Railroad and Santa Fe Railroad. In 1992 Stan was transferred to Gonzales, TX to open the new short-line Texas Gonzales and Northern Railway, (TXGN). He served as General Manager until his retirement. After a short retirement he went back to work for WB Farm and Ranch for 12 years. Stan has been a VFW member and active member of the Elks Lodge from 1992 until his death. He was a kind and gentle man who would do anything for anyone. He was loved by all who knew him. He was a true blessing to his wife, kids, and grandkids. Stan is survived by his adoring wife of 46 years, Jeannie Bias of Gonzales. His 3 children, Natalie Capshaw of Conneaut Lake, PA, Joey Bias of Carlsbad, NM, Renee and husband Michael Rhodes of Burnet, TX, 5 grandchildren, Coke Capshaw, Mesa Capshaw, Lacie Rhodes, Branstan Rhodes and Chloe Rhodes, brothers Eddie Bias (Mittie) of Palacios and Benjamin Hulen of Dalhart as well as his nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, MT Bias, mother, Dessie Hulen and dad Charles Hulen and a brother, Charles "Chuck" Hulen. A memorial service is pending with Seydler-Hill Funeral Home and will be announced when a date and time can be confirmed. Honorary pallbearers: Michael Rhodes, Coke Capshaw, Branstan Rhodes, Wayne Burnam, Wayne Cole, Donnie Grauke, Elks Lodge Officers past and present, and WB Farm and Ranch staff past and present. Oscar Samuel Grant III was born November 1, 1962, to Jennie Taylor and Oscar S. Grant II in Gonzales, Texas. Oscar confessed Christ at an early age at Providence Baptist Church. Our father Oscar left this world on November 11, 2023, at the age of 61. He will always hold a special place in our hearts. Our dad was a talented musician and drummer. Growing up he played in his family's band, with his brothers, sister and father. They performed in various places around the area and loved doing it. He took a lot of pride and loved music, whether it came to playing the drums or being a connoisseur of different genres of music. Oscar was a devoted family man to his children. He loved attending any basketball games that his children were playing in. He was always a big supporter when they needed him. Oscar was a hard worker and needed to do whatever the family needed. He had a big heart towards those he loved. Our dad would help a stranger on the side of the road whose car had broken down, even when it would inconvenience him. He was a man who enjoyed living, joking, and laughing with his family and friends. Oscar Grant III was preceded in death by his father; Oscar S. Lynn Smith

Age - 95

A true Texan, Lynn Smith Jr. was born November 22nd, 1927 in Luling, TX to Lynn Smith Sr. and Sally "Wootsie" Davis Smith. The family moved to Gonzales where Lynn Jr. attended Gonzales High School and played on the football team. He attended Baylor University where he played the saxophone and clarinet in the orchestra. His love of big band music was locked in; Count Basie and Glen Miller were his favorites. He also participated on the boxing team. Shortly after college, he married Janet Laurence, his lifetime love and partner, and never left her side. Lynn Jr. helped his father run the Lynn Theatre until he found his true passion: ranching. A love of animals and stewardship of the land was something he cherished throughout his life. He served in the Army and was Lieutenant Colonel in the national guard. He also belonged to the Independent Cattlemen's Assoc. , NRA, Oddfellows Lodge and was named Citizen of the Year in the 1980s. He served on the Boards of Directors for the Gonzales Warm Springs Foundation, Luling Foundation Farm and Groos Bank. He was active in Gonzales County politics and the community, emceeing the Come and Take It Parade for many years. He loved the Presbyterian Church and served as an Elder, Deacon and Sunday school teacher. His favorite hobbies were hunting and fishing, playing cards and dominoes, reading, and telling the best stories. He never backed down from a challenge, earning the nickname "Chief. " Lynn Jr. wasn't just our Grandad, he was Grandad to all our friends too. He treasured time with family and welcomed everyone with open arms to join in a meal, a party, the church and everywhere in between. He is survived by wife Janet Smith, daughters Loy Smith and Lynnette Cooper, grandchildren Nicole Cooper and Slade (Courtney) Cooper, and great grandchildren Davis Cooper and Nash Cooper. Services will be held Friday, November 17th, 2023. The graveside ceremony will be at 10 am at Oddfellows Cemetery. Rita Luedecke

Rita Irene Luedecke, 74, of Del Valle, Texas, claimed the promise of her baptism on Monday, October 23rd, 2023 in Austin, Texas. Rita was born in Gonzales, Texas on December 18, 1948, to Stanford and Viola Staton. Rita attended Gonzales High School where she was a proud Orange Jacket. She shared schoolgirl memories of being the first one to be picked for a spelling bee and last one for athletic competitions. Rita met the love of her life, Lynn Luedecke in 1965 at a dance at Turner Hall. Excited to start their new lives together, the two were married October 14. 1967 at St. James Catholic Church. They shared fifty-six years of devoted marriage together and enjoyed attending dances and live music shows with family and friends. Rita and Lynn couldn't wait to start a family of their own, and their children meant the world to them. Though Rita loved attending musical events and reading her favorite role was that as a grandmother. She treasured her time with her grandkids and loved being their Nanny, never failing to keep their favorite foods on hand or make time to watch them whenever needed. Rita was passionate about her many roles at the United States Postal Service. Working for the company for thirty-six years, she made lasting friendships that she cherished. She held the honor of Miss Zip promoting the use of zip codes in mailing addresses. Rita was an active member of Salem Lutheran Church, devoting her time and energy to anything that was needed which included being on the church council, serving as treasurer, as well as writing and printing the bulletins for each service. Rita also served on the East Travis Gateway Library District as Board President and shared the importance of keeping libraries available to the public. Rita will always be remembered for her beautiful smile and the way that she was always willing to help her family and friends. We couldn't have asked for a better wife, mother, grandmother, and sister, and will miss Rita every day. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved her. Rita was preceded in death by her parents, second mother Fran, sister Ruby, brother Woody, and daughter Sheila and is survived by her husband Lynn, sons Dale and Daniel (Davina), her daughter Julie, brother Tim Staton (Misty), Joe Staton (Cindy), Mike Staton, Harry Staton (Lauren), her sisters Rose Jensen (Bo), Margie Cooley (Jim), Judy Cruse (Ervin), Carol Payne, Beth Thayne (J. Lenora Jeanette Sampleton was born November 19, 1937 to the union of Reverend Willie Gus Sampleton and Lenora Ollison in Kenedy, Texas. She transitioned into eternal rest on Monday, October 16, 2023. Lenora grew up with a Christian foundation and accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized. Later she joined Mr. Eden Missionary Baptist Church family. Lenora earned the nickname "Tittie" as a young child and it followed her throughout her life. She was known by many as "Tittie" Lenora received her education from Ball High School in Seguin, Texas. She loved playing the piano and cheerleading. She later married Bill Francis in 1957, no children were born to this union. Lenora moved to Minneapolis and worked at the Minneapolis bank as a teller for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, grandparents, sisters, and brothers. Johnnie Ray Deese, Jr, departed this life on Sunday, October 8, 2023. He was born to Johnnie Ray Deese, Sr, and Eunice Mae Hicks on June 10, 1973. His mother preceded him in death when he was 3 years old. He was raised by his grandparents, Alvin (deceased) and Mary Deese. He was born in Hays County, Texas and attended school in the Luling Independent School District. Johnnie completed his education and was a 1992 graduate of Luling High School. Johnnie began his work-life at the age of 17 in the oil field industry and quickly worked his way up to driller and continued in this field of work until the year 2015. He was a man of multiple skills including plumbing and welding. Working with cattle is what he loved most. He just had a way with cattle and was popularly known as the "cow whisperer". Riding bulls and roping was his favorite enjoyment. Johnnie's rodeo journey began on a bucking barrel behind a house with a group of his high school buddies. He entered rodeos and won several buckles. Johnnie was a shining light in many people's lives. Always dressed to impress. Johnnie stayed starched up, boots, cowboy hat and a smile that could light up a dark room. He loved to dance to country music and socialize. He was a man of integrity and honesty. He loved the Lord, his family, and his friends deeply and unconditionally. Johnnie was an amazing man with a big heart, and he will be dearly missed. Johnnie will forever be loved by his wife, Courtney Moseley Deese, children, Weston, Easton, Laven and Brianne, father, Johnnie Ray Deese, Sr. , paternal grandmother, Mary Deese, brother, Norman Deese, sister, Rose Dotson, and numerous other relatives and friends whose lives Johnnie touched. Peggy Barnett

Age - 83

Peggy Sue Barnett, of Wrightsboro, TX, met her Lord and Savior on October 14, 2023 at the age of 83. Peggy was born on August 14, 1940, to Dago and Maxine Piland in Nixon, Texas. Born and raised in Smiley, TX, Peggy attended Smiley schools where she played volleyball and basketball. It has been said that while playing basketball, Peggy arguably scored more fouls than points as she was a famous lefty who liked to guard with her right arm. She also enjoyed her time as a high school cheerleader where she proudly cheered on the mighty Bantams. She would go on to meet her husband, Jack, in 1956 while working at Rhoades Drug Store. They dated until she graduated from Smiley High School in 1958. Just 6 months after graduating, she and Jack were married on October 25, 1958. They were married for just shy of 65 years. In the years following their marriage, Jack and Peggy welcomed their four boys, Morgan, Mike, Mark, and David, into the family. From 1959 to 1975, Peggy's job was to be a full time mother, where she raised chickens and her boys, likely in that order. Once her boys were older, she began working for Gonzales ISD in 1975 as an Athletic Aid, where she coached girls basketball and track. She always spoke fondly of this job and often times referred to it as her favorite. Peggy then began a long career in banking, starting at Smiley State Bank in 1976, and retiring from South Star Bank of Gonzales in 2013 as the bank's Vice President. Peggy gained great satisfaction from banking by helping countless individuals and families over the years. Her heart was always with the community of Gonzales and she loved nothing more than seeing others succeed. However, more than her love for anything else was her love for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was extremely proud of her title as "Nana" and each of her grandkids held a special place in her heart. Peggy is survived by her husband, Jack Barnett, of Wrightsboro, TX; sons, Morgan Barnett of Wrightsboro, TX, Mike Barnett (Dusty) of Brock, TX, Mark Barnett of Austin, TX, and David Barnett (Julie) of San Marcos, TX; grandchildren, Brittany Salazar (Kevin) of Goliad, TX, Emily Connor (Eric) of Gonzales, TX, Tarah Parsons of Austin, TX, Jon Barnett (Taylor) of Brock, TX, and Ryan Barnett of San Marcos, TX; great-grandchildren Kennedy Salazar, Mason Connor, Evelyn Connor, Kase Salazar, Morgan Connor, Baker Salazar, Bay Barnett, and Bowen Barnett; sister-in-law, Nancy Piland of Woodsboro, TX, as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins whom she loved dearly. Peggy is preceded in death by her parents, Dago and Maxine Piland of Smiley, TX, sister and brother-in-law, Graham and Penny Howell of Round Rock, TX, brother, Leonard Piland of Woodsboro, TX, and Daughter-in-Law, Jill Barnett of Wrightsboro, TX. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 17, 2023 from 5-7 PM at Seydler-Hill Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 18, 2023 at 2:00 PM at Seydler-Hill Funeral Home in Gonzales, TX with Reverend Marvin Miles officiating the services.
