James grew up on the family farm near Horntown and attended Moss Public Schools, then graduated from Holdenville High School as a member of the All State Choir. After graduating from Holdenville, James graded peanuts for the USDA. He married his high school sweetheart Donna Kibby on October 3, 1969 in Holdenville. They later moved to Anadarko Oklahoma where James transferred with the USDA and continued grading peanuts in the Anadarko and Binger area. After about a year, they moved back to Horntown on the family farm where James joined his dad in farming peanuts and running Hamilton Irrigation, where James was an excellent aluminum welder. James also worked in the oilfield during this time. James and Donna enjoyed raising their three children Annette, Candy, and Richard in the Moss community where they attended many school events. The kids were very active in sports and the family enjoyed showing animals through the 4-H and FFA. James would play Santa for families and businesses in the Holdenville and later the Anadarko area. After the oil business slowed down in 1987 they moved their family to Anadarko again. James served his community as a City Councilman and then as Mayor of Anadarko for a time. He loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren watching them play sports and showing animals.
