Lorraine Deborah Papa, formerly of Stratford, passed away on August 25, 2023, at Maefair Healthcare Center, just days after her 76th birthday. Lorraine was born on August 20, 1947, in Bridgeport. In 1959, her family moved to Stratford. She attended Frank Scott Bunnell High School, in Stratford and Albertus Magnus College, in New Haven. Lorraine was fluent in several languages and she used them throughout her career, most recently at the Ct. State Department of Social Services. She also taught conversational French, Spanish, and Italian, as well as business subjects and opera appreciation throughout the community. Lorraine was a former soloist at Golden Hill United Methodist Church, in Bridgeport, as well as a guest soloist in other churches. Lorraine is survived by her sisters, Louise Norell of Fairfield, Marianne Bevilacqua, and her husband, Frank of Guilford, and Roberta Shea and her husband, Daniel of Stratford. She also leaves behind her beloved nephew, David Woiknoris of Groton and his partner, Elizabeth Jackson. She will be missed by many cousins, with whom she made a point of keeping in touch. She was predeceased by her parents, Frank Papa, and Nancy Cappello Papa, as well as her brother-in-law, Richard Norell. Lorraine will be remembered for being an avid reader and for her extraordinary talent for languages. She loved singing, music and the arts. She could always be relied upon for telling a good joke and an entertaining story. The family would like to thank the caregivers at Maefair Healthcare Center and Athena Hospice. Also, many thanks to the medical professionals at St. Vincent's Hartford Healthcare, for the diligent care that Lorraine received throughout the year. Donald Kirkham

Donald H. KIRKHAM, 85, Pastor Emeritus of the Stratford United Methodist, died on December 4, 2023, of complications of Lewy Body Dementia. Born in 1938 to the late Phillip and Mary Anne Kirkham in Sydney, Australia, he was educated at Fort Street Boys' High School, Bathurst Teachers' College, and the University of Sydney. He taught elementary school and worked for the Commonwealth Office of Education. In 1966, Don came to the United States to study at Drew University, where he earned a Bachelor of Divinity. While Assistant Minister at St. James Methodist Church in Lynbrook, New York, he met his future wife, Phebe Weissner, and decided to stay in the United States. After being ordained in the United Methodist Church, Don began his ministry in East Village (Monroe). He earned a PhD at Duke University, where he was a Dempster Fellow, before continuing his ministry in West Haven. After teaching theology at Phillips University Divinity School in Enid, Oklahoma, he returned to Connecticut to lead churches in Darien and then Stratford. He continued to teach, focusing on Methodist History and Polity at Yale Divinity School. He was appointed District Superintendent for Central Connecticut and after completing his term, went to Jesse Lee (Easton). Even in retirement, Don served when called, acting as Interim at Monroe. Don was on the Board of Ordained Ministry, United Methodist Homes, and was a delegate to the World Methodist Conference. In his later years, Don spent his summers at his lake cottage in New Hampshire, sailing, canoeing, and observing the eagles and loons. He collected Methodist and John Wesley memorabilia, and researched his family history, publishing Eastenders: The Kirkhams from Poplar. With more time to devote to writing, he was able to revise his doctoral dissertation into a book: Outside Looking In: Early Methodism as Viewed by its Critics, which won the 2020 Saddlebag Selection Award. He was predeceased by his sister Janet. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Phebe, daughter Phebe (Eric), son Jonathan (Sarah), grandchildren Phebe, Graydon, Keaton and Katherine, and several nieces and nephews. His surviving family in Australia includes a niece, two nephews, and cousins, whom he remained in close contact with and frequently visited. A Memorial service will be held on at the Stratford United Methodist Church, 2600 Main Street on Saturday, December 16 at noon (12 PM). Lillian K. Dinihanian, age 90, of Stratford, beloved wife of the late Nelson "Nails" Dinihanian, passed away on December 5, 2023, at Lord Chamberlain Health Center, Stratford. Lillian was born in Bridgeport on August 15, 1933, to the late Peter and Anna (Resnick) Krug and had been a lifelong area resident. She retired from Dresser Industries. Survivors include her 5 devoted children, Nelson (Sandra), Neil, Lori, John (Cheryl) LuAnn (Sandy), 6 cherished grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, sister, Dolly Barker and several nieces and nephews. Joyce Marie (Lynch) Santos, age 53, of Monroe, passed away on Sunday, December 3, 2023 after a courageous battle with cancer. Joyce was born and raised in Bridgeport a daughter of Robert "Jesse" Lynch and the late Pauline (Mason) Lynch. Joyce had worked as a hairstylist and cosmetologist. She was a loving mother, daughter and sister. Joyce will be greatly missed but never forgotten. In addition to her father, Bob "Jesse" Lynch, she is also survived by her son, Dylan Santos; daughter, Mayson Wallander; siblings Sharon Carleton (Kevin), Robin Lynch (Michele), James Lynch, Kelly Nicolia (Frank) and Kimberly Paola (Angleo); several nieces and nephews; aunts, Joyce Pistey and Vera Bowkley; many cousins; and her life long friends Mike Wallander, Debbie, Jeannette, Annie, and Michelle. Ronald Sperling

Ronald A. Sperling, age 89, of Stratford, beloved husband of the late Lisbeth Brown Sperling, passed away on December 2, 2023, at Bridgeport Hospital. Ron was born at home in Stratford on December 4, 1933, to the late Richard and Louva (Cook) Sperling and had been a lifelong area resident. He was a U. S. Marine Corp veteran of the Korean War and was a retired mechanical engineer for Raytheon Corporation. Ron was life member of VFW Post 9460 in Stratford and was also a member of American Legion Post #16 Shelton. A lifelong athlete, Ron was an avid golfer. He also played on many softball teams, bowled for Grace Lutheran Church and was a member of the American Legion Horseshoe League. In addition, he was involved in youth sports, coaching the Holy Name Cardinals football team and PAL little League teams. Survivors include his devoted children, Cheryl McCuen and Gregory Sperling (Doloris) all of Stratford, 3 cherished grandchildren, Caitlyn McCuen (JP), Molly McCuen (Joseph), and Rebecca White (Matthew), 3 great-grandchildren, Marleigh and Madelyn Maxfield, and Vincenzo White. Geraldine M. Brown, age 95 of Stratford, Connecticut, passed away on November 29, 2023. Born on June 25, 1928 in South Boston, MA, she was a daughter to Michael McColgan and Anne Hartin. Geraldine was predeceased by her husband, Royal Brown. She was also predeceased by sisters Kathleen M. McColgan, Rita T. Dwyer, Patricia A. Higgins, Florence T. Noonan, Ann G. Cardinal and brothers John J. , George M. , James W. , Eamon D. , and Donald J. McColgan. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Geraldine retired from Xerox Corp. where she worked in Rochester, NY and Stamford, Ct. An avid Bridge player, Gerry was also involved in various community projects at Oronoque Village where she lived for many years. A parishioner at St. Marks Church, Gerry dedicated her life to the Catholic Church. LIAN, James W. (Jim) age 82, of Stratford past into eternal rest, Monday, November 27, 2023 in the West Haven VA. Jim was born in Bridgeport, December 12, 1940, son of the Anthony and Anna (Pekar) Lian. He was educated in the Stratford school system graduating from Stratford High School, class of 1968. He proudly served in the US Navy for over 10 years, earning two Good Conduct Medals and several combat medals while in Vietnam aboard the USS Charles S. Sperry (DD697) as a BT1/C . He also served aboard the USS Glennon (DD840) as BT2/C and then the USS Georgetown (AGTR2) as a BT/1C and the Senior Boilerman. While in the military, he attended Boiler Class "A" school at Great Lakes, IL. , also Boiler Class "B" school at Philadelphia PA. He was a member of the Sterling House Tin Can Sailers, American Legion, Fleet Reserve Association, D. A. V. , Amvets, USO, and the Republican National Committee. He was employed by Dresser Industries in Stratford for thirty-two years, until his retirement in 2000. Jim was a longtime friend of Bill W. and Dr. Bob, to whom he was eternally grateful for being in his life and saving it. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Richard (Dick) Lian. Kathleen (Kay) Zorka, age 102, of Bridgeport, beloved wife of the late John M. Zorka, passed away on November 25, 2023, in her home. Kay was born in Bridgeport on December 12, 1920, to the late Nicholas and Anastasia (Zboroluk) Nykorchuk and had been a lifelong area resident. She attended the University of Bridgeport, where she was the first women to receive a certificate in the Insurance Program. Kay was the proprietor of Zorka Insurance-Real Estate and Travel Co. She was a longtime active member of St. Mary's Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Bridgeport and was involved in many of the church activities and held many offices. Survivors include her devoted daughter, Kathleen Danilowicz and her husband Michael of Stratford, 3 cherished grandchildren, John Banot, Tamara and Aleksandr Danilowicz, sister, Dorothy Lewis of South Carolina, and several nieces and nephews. Joseph James Minkowski, age 70 of Stratford, the beloved husband of Marlyn Graham Minkowski, passed away on Friday, November 24, 2023 in his home. Born in Bridgeport on June 14, 1953 to the late Jan and Pauline (Bernaski) Minkowski, he has been a lifelong area resident. Joe, a 1971 graduate of Bunnell High School, was a senior manufacturing engineer with Paragon Medical, formerly Lacey Manufacturing. He had a passion for boating and was a long-time member of the Housatonic Boat Club. He loved fishing, hunting, gardening, and photography and especially enjoyed spending time with his daughter. Survivors include his beloved wife, Marlyn and his loving daughter, Susan Minkowski. Michelle Lucielle Taylor Edwards, age 61, of Stratford CT, passed away peacefully at Bridgeport Hospital with her two children by her side on November 17, 2023, after a 10-year battle with Kidney failure. Michelle was born on January 31, 1962, to John Robert and Mae Beatrice Darden Taylor in New Haven. After Michelle graduated from St Mary's in 1979, she went on to study at Housatonic Community College earning an Associate Degree in business administration, a Bachelor's Degree from Albertus Magnus College also in business administration. Following, she pursued and obtained an Associate's Degree in Drug and Alcohol Recovery counseling (DARC) from Gateway Community College. This was a lifelong dream to become a drug and alcohol counselor and she worked at CrossRoads of New Haven. Before working in her dream field, Michelle was employed by Southern New England Telephone company and AT&T for many years ending in 2008 as an Executive Assistant in Tribeca, New York. Michelle had 30 years of sobriety devoting her life to helping others become clean and sober. Michelle met and married Henry J. Edwards in New Haven, having two beautiful children, Nicole Danielle Edwards and H. Jonathan Edwards III, both of Stratford. After her divorce, Michelle fell in love and spent the last 20 years of her life with the love of her life, Lisa McGhee of Brooklyn, New York. Michelle loved to spend her quality time cooking, laughing, singing and dancing with her family.
