Otter Creek Loretia M. Tripp, 92, passed away peacefully on October 3rd, 2023, her son Bruce Tripp and granddaughter Caresse were by her side. Rita was born in Northeast Harbor to Richard and Clara (Reed) Murphy on October 5th,1930. Rita Married Walter Tripp in 1947 and they lived in Otter Creek all 54 years of marriage. Rita loved her walks from the end of Walls Street through the ledges to Otter Creek Beach. She lay in the sun at low tide on the giant rock that would appear. She was a happy yard sale shopper and an avid reader. To the very end, even with her mind betraying her, Rita would light up at the image of a child, and she always adored babies. Rita worked at a few jobs in her life, but the one she loved most was at the Otter Creek Grocery Store/Post office. She loved learning all the rules for running the post office. That store let her talk to all her neighbors and the campers that came in from Black Woods Campground. She loved telling them all about the island and how she grew up here. It's hard to say how many people's lives she influenced in her life. She would tear up hearing all the wonderful stories from people about she touched their lives. It's bittersweet seeing her go, but knowing she needed to, knowing her suffering is over and she is free to run through the woods, splash in the waves, and soak in the sun again, surrounded by family and friends, impatiently waiting for the rest of us to stop dallying c'mon, catch up. Rita is survived by her family; oldest daughter, Brenda Kinter and husband Robert, only son Bruce Tripp (Susan, gone to soon). She has 5 grandchildren, Dale Lawrence, Eric Parsons, Melanie Mace and husband Travis, Caresse Hanson, Jennica Piecuch, and husband Steve; 5 great grandchildren, Shelby and Courtney Lawrence, Samantha and Tysen Mace, and Mila Piecuch; 5 great-great, grandchildren; Ryder Cyr, twin brothers Hudson and Tucker Childs, and Crew and Wren Childs. She was predeceased by all siblings, Maitland, Joyce, Leland, and Gail as well as her beloved husband Walter, daughter Bonnie Tripp, and daughter in law, Susan Tripp. Graveside Services will be held 12:30 pm, October 21, 2023, at Otter Creek Cemetery, Otter Creek. Those who desire may make contributions in Rita's memory to the Susan Tripp Scholarship Fund at the First National Bank of Bar Harbor. Condolences may be expressed at www. jordanfernald. com

Swan's Island Theo P. May, age 95, passed away peacefully early on the morning of November 23, 2023, following a very brief illness. She was at Eastern Maine Medical Center with her daughter by her side. Born on April 8, 1928, to Theodore and Alberta (Sprague) Buswell, Theo was the oldest of five siblings. She met her future husband Roy May when he came to the island to work as a woodcutter. She said she fell in love with his beautiful white horse, and then she fell in love with him. The two were married on June 4th,1945 and would go on to have three children together. Theo worked for a while as a waitress at the Morrison restaurant on Swan's Island, which was owned by her sister Etta. After that, she worked as a lobster fisherman with Roy, as well as knitting bait pockets and heads to sell to other local fishermen. A talented knitter, Theo made sweaters, mittens, hats, afghans, and baby sets for the people around her. She was a wonderful cook, a social butterfly, and loved flowers, birds, and children. Theo was a very forgiving person. It was her belief that you had to let it go or it would eat you up. She lived by that belief and was known for her cheerful nature. In the '60s, Theo and Roy began fostering teenaged children, including Arnold Nash, Jimmy Ginn, and Richard Leavitt. Later, when those children had moved on, Theo and Roy got a phone call, saying that two children, ages three and four, were in immediate need of a home. Just two days before Christmas, Lori and Jessie (Dewey) Curtis joined their family. Within a few months, the household grew again, as three children, ages four, five, and six arrived. Chris, Donny, and Kevin Turner made them a family of ten. Theo and Roy raised everyone in their full house to adulthood. In later years, Lori left her infant son, Micah, in Theo and Roy's care. They gave him their name and he became their son. As the oldest person on Swan's Island, Theo was presented with the gold cane. She had the honor of holding it from 2019-2023. She is survived by her daughter-in- law, Gwen May; son, Leonard May and his wife, Jackie; daughter, Lisa Stanley and her husband, Lawrence (Sonny); son, Micah May; brother, Albert Buswell, with whom she had a close bond; sister, Leona Buswell and her wife, Betsy; and canine companion, Lucky-- all of Swan's Island. Theo leaves behind 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great- grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, including an especially-dear-to-her-heart niece, Linda Morrison. She was predeceased by her parents, Ted and Alberta Buswell; her husband, Roy May, who passed in February of 2004; her son, Roger May, who passed in June of 2003; and two sisters, Etta Morrison and Theresa Orcutt. A memorial service will be held at the Swan's Island Church of God on Friday, December 1, 2023, with visiting hours 10:30-11:30 followed by a memorial service at 12:00 with the Reverend Paul Joy officiating. A reception will follow. Theo will be laid to rest at the Rose Hill Cemetery. Charlotte Singleton

Charlotte Singleton

Age - 79

October 18, 2023

Mount Desert Charlotte Kennedy Singleton, 79, died on October 12, 2023, at Eastern Maine Medical Center from injuries suffered in a car accident. She was returning from a holiday in France to celebrate her birthday. Charlotte was born in North Carolina in 1944 and grew up in Kentucky, Missouri, and Texas. Her parents, Wilbur Henry Tyte and Marion Jones Tyte were gifted communicators, a minister, and a teacher. She graduated from Barnard College in New York, where she developed a passion for world affairs, human rights, and honest journalism. She raised her young children with her first husband, Stephen, in Germany and later in Portland, Oregon, where she became an influential community leader. Charlotte married her second husband, Seth, in 1988, who courted her on a trip to Siberia. They were both deeply committed to raising family. They moved to Mount Desert Island in 2001 and built their home among woods and quarries. Seth's expressive personality was a perfect complement to Charlotte's quieter presence. They were married for 35 years. Charlotte cared deeply about people, particularly children. She helped poor children in remote mountain areas of Vietnam gain medical treatment. For nearly 20 years in Maine, she was a court-appointed representative of children needing legal advocacy, taking the most difficult cases. In her final act of kindness, she facilitated the adoption of two sisters last month. Charlotte loved the experience of new places and cultures. She traveled throughout Asia, Russia, Mongolia, and Europe. She was an avid reader and an exceptional editor. Her favorite coffee mug, a gift from her family, reads "I am silently correcting your grammar. " She managed organizations with intense, quiet effectiveness - the World Affairs Council of Oregon and the National Council of World Affairs Organizations, the Mount Desert Island Historical Society, the program of the Camden Conference. She worked with Seth at universities in Ecuador and Vietnam. Charlotte led with an unerring moral and ethical sense, great kindness, and boundless energy. Charlotte's family cherished her loving nature, humor, generosity of spirit, and excellent cooking. Her grandchildren grew up on MDI skating on her quarry pond, playing games in her woods, and eating delicious food at her dinner table. She often expressed how she wished all people could experience her blessings. Over the last decade, Charlotte spent time with family at Governor's Harbor on Eleuthera, an island settled by her ancestors. She felt at home on the pink sands and with the kind and generous Bahamians. She enjoyed attending the beautiful church built in honor of her great-grandmother, also named Charlotte. She is survived by her loving husband Seth, by daughter Abigail Curless and her husband Michael, by sons Andrew Kennedy and his wife Catlin, and Matthew Kennedy, by step-sons Andy Singleton and his wife Mary Ann, and Will Singleton, and by grandchildren Audyn and Opal Curless, Owen and Fionna Kennedy, and step-granddaughter Anna Singleton. Alice Carter

Alice Carter

Age - 94

October 17, 2023

Northeast Harbor Alice G. Carter passed away on October 14, 2023, at age 94, after a long and full life. Born in Northeast Harbor, she was the daughter of L. Frances (Conary) Murphy, and grew up with her grandparents, Captain Elmer E. Conary and his wife, Gertrude (Fernald) Conary. Alice spent her early years at Mark Island Lighthouse, off Stonington, where her grandfather was the lightkeeper. She returned to Northeast Harbor at age six to attend Stetson Grammar School and then Gilman High School. She was, she proudly recounted, the valedictorian for the class of 1948. At Gilman she met Lewis K. Moore who she married in the summer of 1948. From this marriage came a son, Lewis E. Moore. The pair later divorced and several years later she met Dwight B. Carter from Seal Harbor. Alice and Dwight married in 1959 and were joined by two daughters, Katrina and Jennifer. As a young woman Alice held many jobs in Northeast Harbor and enjoyed reminiscing about them with friends and family. During high school she worked at the Asticou Inn. Hired as a dishwasher, she was too short to do her job and a wooden stool had to be built so she could reach the sinks. Promoted in subsequent summers, she later served in the dining room. She also worked as a telephone operator in the Northeast Harbor office and spent time working as an assistant for Dr. Haskell, the village dentist. In the early 1960s she worked at Mrs. Tracy's Shop in Northeast Harbor, where the display windows overlooking Main Street occasionally doubled as playpens for Katrina and Jennifer. In 1967, Alice and Dwight opened Carter's Real Estate from their home in Northeast Harbor and together they earned a reputation as honest and devoted real estate brokers and rental agents. Together they worked closely with clients and Alice took great pride in the longstanding friendships that owed their origins to real estate transactions. Beyond real estate, Alice and Dwight worked together for more than 30 years managing The Harbor Club in Seal Harbor and Alice stepped up with "Nanny's Sannies" whenever Dwight needed somebody to make sandwiches for Main Street Variety. Together, Alice and Dwight were a team. Alice believed strongly in civic involvement and remained active in many organizations well into her 80s. She was a pillar of the Union Church in Northeast Harbor and served as a Trustee for decades. As a member of the Guild she organized countless church fairs and dinners, and she was especially proud of her involvement in fundraising for the present day Parish House. She was on the board of the Mount Desert Development Trust, an early effort to erect workforce housing on Mount Desert Island, and often pointed out the Sound Drive residence built by this group in the early 1990s. She was also involved in the Mount Desert Housing Authority, the Mt. Desert Island Hospital Auxiliary, and the Cranberry Island Ladies Aid. She helped wherever she felt a need and was generous with her time and skills. Alice loved her family and her community deeply and spent her life devoted to both. Alice is survived by her children, Lewis E. Moore and Katrina L. Carter (Mark Middleton), three grandsons, Benjamin C. Moore (Melissa Moore), Christopher S. Moore (Korin Moore), and Willie Granston, and two great-granddaughters, Taylor and Gabrielle Moore. Alice is also survived by nieces and nephews, cousins, and numerous friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Dwight B. Carter in 2001, and her daughter, Jennifer L. Carter in 2004. Alice's family is deeply grateful to Marlene Walker and Charlene Wallace, of Total Care Solutions in Holden, for all they did to keep Alice safe and happy when she was no longer able to live in her home on Harborside Road. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p. m. , Thursday, October 19, 2023, at the Union Church in Northeast Harbor, with The Rev. Canon Percy Grant officiating. Private interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery, Northeast Harbor. Those who desire may make contributions in Alice's memory to Island Housing Trust, P. O. Box 851, Mount Desert, Maine 04660.
