Lois Westervelt, age 86, formerly of Nashua, died Wednesday, October 4, 2023, at Oak Park Place in Dubuque. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a. m. Thursday, October 12, 2023, at the United Methodist Church in Nashua. Interment will be held in Greenwood Cemetery in Nashua with Weston Westervelt, Dana Bobst, Erin Jaeger, Natalie Hess, William "Bill" Mashek, and Mike Mashek as pallbearers. Visitation will be held 4:00 - 7:00 p. m. Wednesday, October 11, 2023, at the Hugeback Johnson Funeral Home and Crematory - Olson Chapel in Nashua. Dolores Cuvelier age 88 of Lawler, IA, died Sunday, October 22, 2023, at UnityPoint Health - Allen Hospital in Waterloo, IA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a. m. Friday, October 27, 2023, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler with Rev. Nick Radloff celebrating the Mass. Interment will be held at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Cemetery, Lawler with Adam Cuvelier, Grant Cuvelier, Matthew Cuvelier, Spencer Cuvelier, Cade Kuennen, and Cole Fencl serving as pallbearers. Friends may greet the family from 4:00 - 7:00 p. m. Thursday, October 26, 2023, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler, where there will be a 7:00 p. m. parish scripture service. Visitation continues an hour prior to the Mass at the church on Friday. Dolores Caroline (Bodensteiner) Cuvelier was born December 12, 1934, on the family farm southeast of St. Lucas, IA, the third child of Henry and Julia (Winter) Bodensteiner. She received her education at St. Luke schools, graduating from St. Luke High School in May 1952. After graduation, Dolores stayed home and helped on the family farm while her brothers served their country in the military. Dolores met Bob Cuvelier on a blind date arranged by a mutual friend. Their first date was a dance at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake. Many dates later, Bob and Dolores were united in marriage on January 19, 1955, at St. Luke Catholic Church in St. Lucas. They lived on different farms in the Lawler area until March 1962 when they bought an acreage south of Lawler. Bob worked for various feed and fertilizer plants in the area. Dolores was a homemaker, tending a large vegetable garden and doing lots of canning and freezing of the produce and baking to feed their six sons. In the fall of 1969, the parochial school in Lawler closed and Dolores became the Director of Religious Education for Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish. Dolores, Father John Moran, and many volunteer parents and parishioners set up the CCD program for grades pre-school through high school. She worked from home and spent many evenings and weekends at church while Bob was home with the children. In 1974, when all the children were in school, Dolores started working at Meyers' Locker and Superette in Lawler, while still keeping her DRE position. In 1979, Dolores and Bob moved to Lawler. Dolores then became an employee at the State Bank of Lawler as an assistant cashier until 2004 when she retired. Dolores especially enjoyed her co-workers and the customers she served, as well as hosting bus trips to Branson MO. Bob and Dolores enjoyed traveling to various places. They made several trips to Alaska to visit their son and daughter-in-law and spent five winters snowbirding in Mesa, AZ. In addition to gardening and traveling, Dolores very much enjoyed family gatherings and attending activities of the extended family, from the fine arts through athletics, at all levels, from little league through college. In her later years, she loved watching football on TV, especially the Northern Iowa Panthers, Iowa State Cyclones, Iowa Hawkeyes, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and Green Bay Packers. Dolores was a life-long active member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church where she devoted many hours of volunteer time and labor. She was a member of the Parish Society and a 64-year member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She held various offices in the American Legion Auxiliary and gifted innumerable volunteer hours to the community. Dolores is survived by her six sons, John (Leslie) of Lawler, Gary (Nancy) of Lawler, Richard "Dick" (Lindsay) of Decorah, Thomas "Tom" (Sue) of Dubuque, Paul (Susan) of Mason City, Mark (Renee) of Cresco; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law Donna Sokolik of Hampton; Dorothy (Don) Harmon of Anamosa, Carol Koenen of Hampton, Jeannie Cuvelier of Sierra Vista, AZ; and many nieces and nephews. Dolores was preceded in death by her husband, Bob on April 20, 2015; her parents Henry and Julia Bodensteiner; sister, Bernice (Greg) Hauer; brothers Kilian (Elaine) Bodensteiner and Henry (Janet) Bodensteiner; great-granddaughter Natalie Rose Kuhn in infancy; parents-in-law Elmore and Iva (Vincent) Cuvelier; sisters and brothers-in-law: Albert (Billie) Cuvelier; Iven (Jean) Cuvelier; Orlo (Patricia) Cuvelier; Harley (Ruth) Cuvelier, Leland (LaVera) Cuvelier, Craig Cuvelier, Maxine (Burdine) Hahn, Sheryl Sokolik, Bill Koenen, and Eva Cuvelier in infancy. Alvin E. Vsetecka, age 91 of Lawler, IA passed away peacefully on July 29, 2023 at Mercy One New Hampton Medical Center. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a. m. Saturday, September 23, 2023, at Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, Lawler with Rev. Nicholas Radloff celebrating the Mass. Interment will be held at a later Date. Friends may greet the family from 4:00 - 7:00 p. m. Friday, September 22, 2023, at Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, Lawler . Visitation continues an hour prior to the Mass at the church on Saturday. Alvin was born July 5, 1932, to Frank and Annastasia (Klima) Vsetecka near Jackson Junction, IA. He received his early education at School District No. 7 south of his home and at St. Wenceslaus Catholic School in Spillville, Iowa until the 8th grade. He received the sacraments at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Spillville. Alvin was drafted into the Army with his training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and served most of his time in Korea until he was discharged. Upon his return home, he took over the family farm. On October 7, 1961, he was united in marriage to Patricia Brincks at St. Luke's Catholic Church in St. Lucas, IA. This union was blessed with four children: Lowell, Linda, Joseph, and Jeffrey. The couple farmed north of Jackson Junction on the family farm until 1993 when they retired to Lawler. Alvin enjoyed playing the accordion and listening to old time music, talking the Czech language, playing cards, driving around the countryside, visiting with their coffee group, cracking walnuts and hickory nuts and socializing. He was a member of OLMC, Lawler, VFW in Ft. Atkinson, and the Lawler Legion. Alvin is survived by his wife of 61 years, Patricia 'Pat' (Brincks) Vsetecka of Lawler; children Linda (Kevin) Luzum of Ft. Atkinson, Joe (Lisa) Vsetecka of Ft. Atkinson; and Jeff Vsetecka of Charles City; Grandchildren Cynthia (Matthew) Overmann, Jacob Luzum, Emily (Tyler) Barkau, Hanna (Mak) Kriener, Heidi Vsetecka, Josh Vsetecka, Lia Vsetecka, Kaitlyn (Katlynd) Vsetecka, Kelsey Vsetecka, Lindsey Vsetecka, and Luke Vsetecka, great grandchildren Kaislee and Teegan Kriener and Landon Overmann, Brother-in-law Parnell (Diane) Brincks and Sisters-in-law Geraldine (Ronald) Tlusty, Verneal Koudelka, Mardell (Melvin) Sobolik, Ilene (Alvin) Stika and many nieces and nephews. Irma Anna Hageman, age 97 of Lawler, Iowa died Friday, September 8, 2023, at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a. m. Thursday, September 14, 2023, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler with Rev. Nick Radloff officiating with Interment at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Reilly Ridge. Visitation will be held 4:00 - 7:00 p. m. Wednesday, September 13, 2023, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler. There will also be a 7:00 p. m. Parish Scripture Service. Further visitation will be one hour prior to the Mass on Thursday at the church. Irma Anna Hageman was born on June 8, 1926, on the family farm near St. Lucas. The daughter of Konrad and Barbara (Kuennen) Wurzer. She received her education at St. Luke's Catholic School. On June 16, 1948, she married Florian Hageman at St. Luke's Catholic Church in St. Lucas. The couple was blessed with ten children, Robert, Kathleen, Ronald, Karen, Jolene, Mark, Alice, Laurie, Sylvia, and Gladys. The couple moved to a farm five miles north of Lawler and became members of Sacred Heart at Reilly Ridge. Irma served as a CCD teacher and later the DRE. She also served as a lector, and communion minister and attended the first Lay Ministry Program graduating in 1982. Irma attended sewing classes at Area One and spent several years teaching sewing classes in the area. She dedicated a lot of her time and talents as a 4H leader. Irma spent 10 years working for Cutsforth Pizza and Chicken in Lawler. Irma was an integral part of the family farm, and every year had extensive gardens that were always filled with a variety of vegetables that would feed the family every year. When Sacred Heart became an oratory in 1989, the family became members of Mt. Carmel in Lawler. Irma was a member of the Court Mt. Carmel Order of Catholic Daughters. She served the Court as recording secretary several times and held the position of Regent and District Director for several years. In 1992, the couple retired from the farm and moved into Lawler. Irma spent many happy hours tending her flowers, which she enjoyed immensely. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, embroidery, and sewing. She also supplied the family with many quilts and afghans. She also enjoyed mending and sewing for others. Irma is survived by her children, Robert "Tex" Hageman of Lime Springs, IA, Karen (Keith) Weiss of Madison, WI, Jolene (Joe) Rosenbaum of Little Turkey, IA, Mark Hageman of New Hampton, IA, Alice Miller of Ossian, IA, Laurie (Doug) Hanson of Decorah, IA, Sylvia (Jeff) Schluetter of New Hampton, IA, Gladys (Randy) Schluetter of New Hampton, IA; son-in-law, Doug Ball of Little Turkey, IA; 35 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Alvina Hemesath-Murray of Lawler, IA, Alma Hemesath of Ossian, IA, Doris Smith of Ft. Atkinson, IA; sister-in-law, Margaret Wurzer of Ft. Atkinson, IA.
