Lloyd E. Willis, aged 99, peacefully departed from this world to join the presence of the Lord on September 9, 2023. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and a remarkable man whose legacy will forever be cherished by his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dewey and Ida Willis, and his first wife of 43 years, Marjorie Green Willis. He also joins his brothers, Lawrence and Arthur Robert Willis of Escondido, CA, and sisters, Valerie Middleton of Montrose, CO, and Virginia Smith-Gore of Damascus, MD. Lloyd is survived by his loving wife, Esther, of Colonial Beach, VA, and his devoted sons, Dr. Norman (Eileen) Willis of Portland, OR, and Kirt (Jeanette) Willis of Bellevue, WA. He is also survived by his step-sons, Jonathon Vermillion of Golden, CO, Theodore (Barbara) Rothman of Great Mills, MD, and Timothy (Tracy) Rothman of El Dorado, CA. Lloyd leaves behind a rich legacy with 16 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. He was also a cherished foster father to Ian Moog and leaves behind numerous nephews and nieces. Lloyd's thirst for knowledge led him to attend schools in Maryland, Michigan, and California. He graduated with an AA degree from Palomar Community College, San Marcos, CA, and achieved an honor graduate status, receiving a BA degree in Urban Studies from the University of California, Riverside. Additionally, he earned his pilot's license in Lansing, MI in 1946. During World War II, Lloyd served with valor in the Army Paratroops as a squad leader and test jumper of experimental parachutes from 1942 to 1945, with assignments in Panama, Canal Zone, and the Philippines. He was recalled to active duty in 1950 with the 40th Infantry Division, serving as a platoon sergeant in Japan and Korea. His dedication to duty earned him numerous medals and awards. In recent years, Lloyd and Esther remained active with the 551st PI Association and the 542nd Airborne Command. Lloyd retired as City Manager in Chehalis, WA, in 1988, following prior administrative positions as City Manager in San Marcos, CA, Assistant to the City Manager in Escondido, CA, and Unit Administrator for the California National Guard. He also served as a dedicated police officer. Throughout his life, Lloyd was an active member of numerous organizations, including the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, where he held the title of Past Exalted Ruler and life member. He served two consecutive terms as Post Commander of American Legion Post 149 in Escondido, CA, and was a life member of American Legion Post 148 in Colonial Beach, VA. Additionally, he was a Life Member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10574 in Colonial Beach, VA, and served as Past President of Kiwanis International Division 37 in California. Lloyd also played an active role in various community organizations, including Economic Development Council and the Chamber of Commerce in Chehalis, WA. He was a recipient of the President's Volunteer Service Award and was a former member of the Chehalis/Centralia Airport Board. Lloyd also served as a volunteer for the American Red Cross during federal disasters in Chehalis, WA. He was a dedicated and active member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. A funeral service to celebrate Lloyd's life will be held at 11 am on September 19, 2023, at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Oak Grove, VA. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place at St. Peter's Cemetery in Oak Grove, VA. William N. Hooks, Jr. , 93, of Colonial Beach, VA passed away on November 15, 2023. Bill graduated from Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy in 1953. Known for his unwavering determination, he pursued his goals with steadfast dedication. Bill possessed a unique ability to think outside the box, and his proudest career moments were marked by his work on projects including the Tomahawk missiles and the Saturn II rocket with Rocketdyne in California. His career brought him to Dahlgren where he retired in 1994. During the Korean War era, Bill served in the Navy as a pilot/navigator, flying numerous missions over the South China Sea in search of enemy mines. As a veteran, Bill was an active member of the Colonial Beach VFW Post 10574, where he served in various capacities including District Commander. He was also a dedicated member of the American Legion. Bill's quick wit and humor endeared him to many. He He loved sharing jokes with friends and strangers alike, always seeing the best in people and offering encouragement. His zest for life was evident in his daily exercise routine and adventurous spirit. Whether roughing it in a tent or enjoying the luxuries of a resort, Bill loved to travel and camp with his family. He found joy in building model trains, both for summer and winter landscapes, as well as collecting lighthouses and model airplanes. To his family, Bill was an absolute rock. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Bill & Rose Hooks; and his wife of 51 years, Maureen. Bill is survived by his wife, Sandra; children, Philip (Charlene) and Michele; step-daughter, Catherine (James); grandchildren, Alex, Amy, Summer, Angela, Argus, Amber, and Drew; step-granddaughter, Celes; and ten great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 11am to 12noon on Saturday, November 25, 2023 at Storke Funeral Home, Colonial Beach followed by a funeral service at 12noon. Burial will be handled privately. Chuck Morton, formally Charles J. Morton, Sr. , died peacefully at his home in Colonial Beach, Virginia on Friday, November 10th, days after celebrating his 80th birthday with his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Connie Canby-Morton, his four children, Charles Morton, Jr. of Baltimore, Maryland (Paddy Morton), Paula Carren of Damascus, Maryland (Chris Grover), Joanne Frailer of Bel Air, Maryland (Ron Frailer), and Kevin Morton of Baltimore, two step-sons, Tim Fekete of Everett, Washington, and Tom Fekete (Michelle Fekete) of Sebastian, Florida, 18 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. Chuck was born in Baltimore in 1943 to John and Yvonne Morton (nee von Moos), the second of four children. He is survived by his sister, Louise Golder of Bethesda, Maryland and brother, John (Ellen) of Laconia, New Hampshire. His sister, Marianne Paluck, predeceased him. He grew up in Aspen Hill, Maryland, attended Catholic schools, and graduated from Archbishop John Carroll High School in 1961. Chuck loved to build. A mason by trade, his career was spent in construction as a craftsman, entrepreneur, and long-term superintendent of Senate Masonry. He enjoyed pointing out his projects while driving anywhere in the DMV. Chuck earned the reputation of being the hardest working man on every jobsite. He always got the best from his team. His efforts paved the way for hundreds of colleagues, many of whom were immigrants trying to establish themselves in the United States. He could be both passionate and playful. Whether it was boating, skiing, or golf, he undertook his interests with the same intensity and delight, sharing his new-found excitement with the people he loved. Pets, in the form of birds and dogs, were his thing, bringing him such joy. In turn, he cared deeply for them. Quick to laugh and a friend to all, he was known throughout the Mid-Atlantic by clerks at 7-Elevens where he would stop for coffee on his way to a job. Most, though, he loved his wife and family. He and Connie were a team. They moved to Colonial Beach, where he renovated three houses, from Hamilton, Virginia and made the town their home. They shared 36 years of marriage. He delighted in spending time with family and took pride in their accomplishments. He considered his family his greatest legacy. He succumbed, after a lengthy battle, to complications related to Parkinson's Disease. He will be missed by many, and his memory will always be a blessing. A funeral service will take place at 1:00pm on Sunday, November 19th at Storke Funeral Home, King George, Virginia. Garland Wayne Burchell, 83, of Bowling Green, passed peacefully on November 8, 2023, at Cardinal Village Memory Care where he had been a resident since August of 2022. He was born in King George County and was a 1958 graduate of King George High School. He worked for Safeway Stores for 30 years as a stock clerk, produce clerk, and produce manager. He then worked for Storke Funeral Home and G. H. Watts Construction, but his real passion was farming. He loved his cows and being in the woods. He also coached his sons' Little League teams and worked on the grounds crew for Caroline Little League. He was predeceased by his parents, Forrest and Viola Burchell; a brother, Howard Burchell, and a sister, Marie Guy He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Kathryn Davis Burchell; 2 daughters, Tracy Coates (Preston) and Susan Stewart (Tim) both of Fredericksburg; 2 sons, Allan Burchell (Jen) of Gainesville and Peyton Burchell (Liz) of Glen Allen; a sister, Emma Nichols (Nick) of Fredericksburg and a sister-in-law, Janice Burchell of King George; seven grandchildren, five great grandchildren, as well as a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation will be held at Storke Funeral home on Thursday, November 16, from 5:30-7:30 p. m. with a followed by a memorial service at 7:00 PM led by the Rev. Kathleen Price. A graveside service will be held at Potomac Baptist Church at a later date. Broaddus, Dorothy Reid, 77, of Bumpass, VA, passed peacefully away at home on November 7, 2023, with her best friend and beloved husband, William W. "Bill" Broaddus, as always by her side. Growing up with 4 brothers; Farnum Thomas Reid, Jr. (Gayle), Michael Warren Reid, William Joseph Reid, and David Scott Reid (Carol), Dorothy knew early she could hold her own. Starting out as a secretary at Fort Belvoir got her into the workforce. A man's pay grade, though, was her ambition. She sought out programs that allowed her to become an Engineering Technician testing contractors' equipment used in various overseas conflicts. Dorothy also worked with the Corps of Engineers on the Pentagon Renovation Team and reclamation of Poplar Island on St. Michael's Island, MD, where she retired with 38 years of service. Virginia was home base for her travels with Bill. The exception was time spent in Pennsylvania to help out during the growing years of her niece, Olivia, and nephews; Jack, Luke, and Alex. Lake Anna was, at first, a weekend camping trip that eventually became the water playground for family and friends. In 2016, the beautiful water views on the lake throughout the seasons, became her and Bill's forever home. Thank you, Dorothy! We treasure all the memories you have left us in our hearts.
