In loving memory of Dr. Lindsey Vernard Heard 1951-2023Macon, Georgia- Lindsey Vernard Heard, devoted husband, loving father, and respected veterinarian, died Monday, September 4, 2023, following a brief illness. Funeral services will be Saturday, September 16, 2023, at 11 AM at Vineville Baptist Church. Burial will be private. Lindsey was the son of the late Charles W. "Billy" Heard and Helene Mae Bullington Heard. He was also predeceased by his sister, Kathy, and his many beloved furry friends, including his "bestest boy", his man-cat, Teddy. Lindsey was a graduate of Lanier High School, the University of Georgia and the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. He truly loved animals and spent over 30 years as a dedicated veterinarian. In addition to building and opening Wesleyan Animal Hospital in Macon, he established the first Mobile Veterinary Clinic in Middle Georgia. Scuba diving and searching for sharks' teeth at Fernandina Beach brought him much happiness. He also loved music- performing in a local band, "The Menagerie," in high school and continuing to play guitar for his entire life. Lindsey's family was his greatest source of joy. He is survived by his cherished and devoted wife, Becky, and their family of five children- Brooke Heard, Taylor Heard (Megan), Gregg Mangum, David Mangum, and Elizabeth Mangum, and two grandchildren, Mackenzie and Zack Heard. He is also survived by his brother, Dr. Chuck (Lee), sister Lane, and his treasured man-cats, Mr. Simon and Baby Raymond, and grand-cats Prince and Garfield, and grand-dogs Hope and PJ. The family would like to extend their thanks and appreciation to all Lindsey's doctors and nurses in Macon, Mayo Clinic Jacksonville, and Emory Hospitals Midtown and Clifton Road, for their excellent and loving care. Sherrill Kemp Smith, Sr. or "S. K. " as he was lovingly known, 88 of Macon, Georgia, joined his loving wife in Heaven on December 7, 2023. The family will have a time of visitation on Sunday, December 10, 2023, from 2:00-4:00 p. m. at FairHaven Funeral Home. Funeral Services to honor his life will be held on December 11, 2023, at 11:00 a. m. at Wesley United Methodist Church; 4256 Hartley Bridge Rd Macon, Georgia 31216. Immediately following the service, Mr. Smith will be laid to rest in Shiloh Church Cemetery. Reverend Josh Gale, Reverend Robert Webb and Reverend Austin Sturdivant will officiate. Mr. Smith was born on March 25, 1935, in Crawford County, Ga, to the late Samuel Lloyd Smith Sr. and Mattie Lee Hancock. He is preceded in death by his wife of 52 years Annie Elizabeth Sorrell Smith, daughter Debra Ruth Hall, granddaughter Debra Lee Heald, brothers S. L. , Kyle, Glen, and Johnnie Smith, sisters Myrtle Fausnight, Tavie Allen, and son in-law David Harp. Mr. Smith owned and operated Smith Realty and Auction and S. K. Smith Realty and Associates for many years. He was in the real estate business for 60 years. He was a dedicated A man of heart and soul, Sherrill was not just a husband or father; he was the patriarch of the family. He loved unconditionally, kept the ties of kinship strong, and never let anyone doubt his love for them. He put others unselfishly before himself and had unwavering faith and love for those closest to him. In his free time, he loved music, whether singing, attending the opera or playing the harmonica, it truly brought him great joy. Mr. Smith was a faithful member of the Mickey Fuller Masonic Lodge #720 F. &A. M. where he served for over 50 years. Survivors include daughter; Theresa Harp, Kathy Criswell David Cook), Vickie Logue (Scott), and Kristy Ard. Sons; Sherrill K Smith, Jr. (Elizabeth Batchelor), and Steve Smith (Jacopa). Elizabeth "Betty" Barlow, 69, of Twiggs County, passed away Tuesday, December 5, 2023. Daughter of the late James Petty and Mallie Stout Petty, Betty was born in Manchester, Tennessee on October 7, 1954. She was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She spent countless years nurturing the lives of those around her, especially through her cherished work at the Georgia Academy for the Blind. Betty's commitment to education and support for the visually impaired was not just a career but a calling. Betty brought light into every room with her vibrant spirit and kind heart, enriching the lives of all who knew her. Betty's passion for quilting was more than a hobby. It was a way for her to express her love and artistic talent, creating beautiful pieces that will be treasured for generations. Her adventurous soul led her to explore the world's wonders alongside her beloved husband, with whom she shared many memorable journeys. Above all, Betty's world revolved around her family, whom she adored beyond measure. She nurtured a home filled with laughter, comfort, and unconditional love, and her guidance and wisdom will continue to resonate in the lives of her relatives and friends. Robert Allen "Bob" Berlin, passed away on November 22, 2023, at the age of 84 in Macon, Georgia. Born to the late Harold Chester and Betty Jaffe Berlin on September 4, 1939, in Passaic, New Jersey. Ever the student, he began his higher education journey early, enrolling at Vanderbilt University at just 15 years old. Bob's exceptional intellect led him down an illustrious path within the legal realm. He graduated to become a respected attorney and eventually a senior partner at the law firm of Berlin and Hodges, P. C. His integrity and wisdom were further recognized when he ascended to the role of Municipal Court Judge, a position he held with honor for 25 years, along with serving as a pro hac Judge in three other courts. From 1973 to 1974, he represented Middle Georgia District 86 in the State House of Representatives, furthering his commitment to public service. Alongside his legal career, Judge Berlin served as a Navy Reserve JAG officer. His caring and thoughtful nature also led him to support others as a marriage and family counselor. Bob's knack for guiding others through conflict was unrivaled. Becoming a leader in Alternative Dispute Resolution training and services. His mediation training course had become internationally recognized and revered, attracting students from around the world. Bob was an enthusiastic teacher, trainer, and presenter, roles he embraced at various institutions including Wesleyan College, Georgia College, Macon State College, Middle Georgia College, Georgia Military College, Central Georgia Technical College, and Herzing College, as well as Mercer University and its School of Law. Outside the courtroom and classroom, Bob was actively engaged in his community. He was a member of the Forsyth-Monroe County Rotary Club, Macon Exchange Club, and Bibb County Jaycees, among other organizations. His service extended to volunteering at Hospice and Big Brothers Big Sisters, where he held roles as President and member of the Board of Directors and was a mentor to numerous young men and boys over the years. Bob was a man of many passions. As a testament to his playful spirit, he went to Clown school and became Bobbo the Clown, spreading laughter and joy wherever he went. His commitment to young people shone through as he served as a foster parent, Boy Scout Leader, and Sunday School Teacher, while also participating in the Bibb County Juvenile Court Citizens Panel Review. An avid Georgia Bulldog fan, Bob enjoyed life's simple pleasures. He was an insatiable reader, a routine runner, and a skilled private pilot. His quick wit was on display during Toastmasters and while indulging in his love for comedy--whether it was telling jokes, engaging in improv, or playing practical jokes. Bob's spiritual journey also included being among the founders of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Macon. He exercised this cooperative spirit in all areas of his life, showing an openness and respect for various beliefs and ideologies. Bob Berlin's legacy is one of profound service, compassion, and joy. Whether it was through his professional achievements or the laughter he incited as Bobbo the Clown, his impact on the world was immeasurable. A dedicated guardian of the law, a beacon of knowledge, and a cherished member of his community, Bob's memory will be held in high esteem by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His absence will be deeply felt, and his influence, forever cherished. Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Katherine Long Berlin. He is survived by his son, Robert Allen "Rab" Berlin, Jr. (Martha Ann), of Suwanee, Georgia; daughters, Sarah Ellen Berlin, of Macon, Georgia, and Alana Katherine Berlin, of Atlanta, Georgia; three grandchildren, Brandon Allen Berlin (Paisley), Brittany Ann Berlin, and Brooke Ansley Berlin; great grandson, Boden Clay Berlin; brother, Burgess Lee Berlin, of Union, New Jersey; and several nieces and nephews. James Edward Stallings, Sr. , age 85, of Macon, Georgia passed away December 1, 2023. A Rosary will be held Wednesday, December 6 at Snow's Memorial Chapel, 746 Cherry St. , Macon, GA at 5:30 pm with the Visitation following at 6:00. There will be a Mass on Thursday, December 7, 2023 at 11:00 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church officiated by Father John Johnson. James was born in Silvertown, Georgia to the late Clarence and Thelma Fowler Stallings. He was retired from the U. S. Air Force Reserve and served in Desert Storm. James authored a book "Georgia's Confederate Soldiers Who Died as Prisoners of War 1861-1865". He was the owner of Stallings Dental Company for over 50 years. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and attended St. Peter Claver Catholic Church. Throughout his life, James was a member of many professional and civic organizations where he often had a leadership role. Among these he served as President of the National Association of Dental Laboratories, President of the Southeastern Conference of Dental Laboratories, President of the Georgia Society of The Sons of the American Revolution, Commissioner for the accreditation of dental technology schools for The American Dental Association, President of the Ocmulgee Chapter Sons of the American Revolution, Camp Commander for Edward Dorr Tracy Jr. Camp #18 Sons of the Confederate Veterans, President of Macon Noon Day Optimist Club, Member of First Families of Georgia, Member of Military Order of Stars and Bars, and he received the Gartland Award from the Diocese of Savannah. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 64 years, Ramona C. Stallings; son, James E. Stallings Jr (Amy) of Macon; daughter, Crystal E.
