Melvin Franklin Minor Sr January 4th, 1944 - November 27th, 2023 It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of a cherished patriarch, Melvin Franklin Minor Sr, who departed this world on November 27th, 2023, at the KUMED center surrounded by his loving family. Born on January 4th, 1944, Melvin was the fourth son of Raymond T. Minor and Melwee Hopkins and the protective big brother to two little sisters. His early years were spent in the heart of Kansas City, KS, initially on Armstrong and later on Quindaro from 1956. Melvin graduated from Wyandotte High School (Go Bulldogs) and continued his education at KCK Junior College, where he proudly majored in "Bid Whist. " In his youth, Melvin embraced life with vigor and had a wide circle of loyal friends. A lover of the open road, he owned and rode motorcycles as a proud member of Vulture's motorcycle club. Beyond his adventurous spirit, Melvin was a responsible and industrious man. He worked as a dedicated welder at KC Structural Steel before embarking on a remarkable 38-year career with Proctor and Gamble, where he eventually retired. In 1969, Melvin married, and from their union, they were blessed with two beautiful children, Rodney and Melwee Minor. In a testament to enduring love, Melvin later married Karen Donnell on January 7th, 1983, and celebrated 45 years of marriage with the love of his life. From this union, four children were born: Melvin Jr, Meloney, Markus, and Angel Minor. Melvin was a pillar of strength, a man with a heart of gold who fiercely loved and protected his family. He had a passion for life and enjoyed hobbies such as dominos, drag racing, and horseshoes. But above all, his greatest joy was being with his kids, grandkids, and family. He shared his love for dominos, imparting the strategy and camaraderie of the game to those around him. His true happiness came from spending quality time with his grandchildren, teaching them life's lessons and even how to count to ten in Spanish. Melvin also found solace and joy in those quiet moments fishing by the water--unless, of course, he was shooting at the fish! He also enjoyed teaching his children how to shoot/target practice while visiting his big brother in Tonganoxie. Melvin's love for fishing was undoubtedly a highlight, showcasing his unique blend of patience and, well, marksmanship. Together with his wife, he was member of the First Baptist Church of Quindaro. Melvin leaves behind a legacy of love and warmth, survived by his sons Melvin Minor Jr, Markus Minor, and Rodney Minor (Tonja), and three daughters Melwee, Meloney, and Angel Minor. He is also remembered fondly by his two sisters Sharon Gooch and Darlene Banks (Curtis). Melvin's cherished grandchildren, Malik, Kanissa, Cali, Messiah, Melvin III, Jayla, Jaylen, Justin Jr, Paisley, Major, and Nicholas, will carry his memory forward. In addition to his immediate family, Melvin is mourned by numerous nieces, nephews, and a wide circle of friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Melwee Minor, siblings Thomas, Richard, and Clifton Minor. Melvin Franklin Minor Sr will be remembered not only for his hard work, but for the love he showered upon his family, the wisdom he shared with friends, and the indelible mark he left on the community he so dearly embraced. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, let us celebrate a life well-lived and honor the timeless legacy he leaves behind. He graduated from Miller Dorsey High School in Los Angeles in 1959 and joined the United States Air Force that summer. His time in the military took him to San Antonio and El Paso, Tx, and Rapid City, SD. He was discharged as an Airman Second Class. He graduated from the University of Utah and worked as an Electrical Engineer. He married his first wife Beverly and they had two children: Rusty and Nikki. His career took them to Ft. His career took them to Midland and Houston, TX; Omaha, NE; Roswell, NM; Owensboro, KY and Zanesville, OH. He and Leslie were avid gardeners, growing hundreds of varieties of iris and lilies. Everywhere they lived, Wayne would build a pond, and often a gazebo, in their backyard. They were both active in local garden clubs wherever they went and judged flower shows. After Leslie died in 2016 he retired and moved to Kansas City to be close to family. He found a wide variety of hobbies to occupy his newfound free time, including ice skating; taking piano lessons; relearning the violin (which he had played in middle school); playing bridge; auditing college classes; and being certified as an amateur ham radio operator. He volunteered with the Greater Kansas City Iris Society to maintain gardens in Loose Park. He enjoyed weekly coffee with his friends at the American Legion in Overland Park, KS. Wayne was a proud blood donor, giving blood his entire life, only stopping in the past year because his iron levels weren’t high enough. Wayne loved sports and was an avid fan of the Denver Broncos, until he moved to Kansas City where he became a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs, except when they were playing the Broncos. He loved college football and basketball and followed teams from many of the cities where he had once lived, recently becoming a big fan of KU basketball. He tolerated baseball if his daughter Denise wanted him to go to a game. He loved to play cards, with Pinochle being his favorite, spending countless hours playing with his family. He could often be seen out walking, sometimes five miles a day, while he listened to books on tape. He brought some iris with him from their yard in Ohio and planted several beds of iris at his house in Kansas City, often entering the blooms in iris shows. Wayne was very kind and helpful, always the first to volunteer. He loved hanging out with his KC family, who have a big family dinner once a month. He was always up for an adventure - whether it was visiting a new part of the city, driving alone to Florida to visit his daughter Sabrina, or teaching himself to sew so he could mend his own clothes. He was a member of the Maple Hill Baptist Church, American Legion Post 0370, the Greater Kansas City Iris Society, the Wyandotte County Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (RACES) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. But he was really "outdoors Dan," the guy in the kayak with a fishing pole, the guy behind the wheel of the ski boat/pontoon pulling tubers on the area lakes & reservoirs, the guy toting a shotgun through a Flint Hills pasture in search of whatever bird/fowl was in season (and always with a trusty hunting dog beside him), the guy coaching his daughters' soccer & softball teams (and always underneath one of the wide-brimmed sun hats and behind big, cool sunglasses). Dan loved playing golf, puttering around the garden & yard, and relaxing on the patio swing. He also enjoyed spending as much time with all of his grandchildren as he possibly could, whether it was attending one of their many activities, decorating sugar cookies with them all at Christmas or enjoying homemade ice cream with them on the 4th of July. He also loved and was loved by many dogs throughout his life, including Bella who is missing her treat sneaking dad. Cremation is planned. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Emporia, on Wednesday, December 6, 2023 at 10:30 A. M. Mass will be celebrated by Father Carter Zielinksi, of the church.
