Stanley Horne

Stanley Horne

Age - 87

December 5, 2023

Stanley Robert Horne died peacefully at his residence, Leigh Hall, on December 02, 2023. Stanley grew up in Norfolk, Virginia on Holt Street, then to Ainsworth Street and finally to Maury where he grew up with Eleanor, Steven & Marianne, his mother Ruth and father Ellis, better know as the "Double EE". Dad raised Harvey & I in Colony point with his wife Jo-Ann Lila until 1972. In Colony point it was a "Little Israel" we had so many relatives and the so-called extended family that watched the 3 of us. My Nana moved into Colony point when she retired from Beth El Temple in the late 70's, soon followed 2 of my grandfather's sisters, Aunt Dora Popkin, and Aunt Gertie and uncle Dave. We had uncle Donald Korel with his 2 children Mark and Lanie, then I believe cousin Jennie move in for a short time before they purchased the house on Granby. Cousin Silva and Morris Korel also lived in the outer side of the apartments. We had the Nat & Ann Prince above us in our apartment and their grandchildren whom I'm very close with today. Lou and Jenny Feldman were like family as well right across the court yard. Then my cousin Shira Beth often came and stayed with both of her Nana's that were just 2 buildings down, Silva and Edna Shames. Of course, across the hall was the Littman family which kept a close eye on all us kids. We were all so Lucky, but the reason I take the time to mention some of the family is because I know Harvey, Dad and I were Loved and felt safe in our single entrance - Colony Point Apartments. My dad was Blessed that Harvey & I would be so influenced by a rich Jewish Heritage because most of our relatives were practicing Jews. Many Hadassah meetings took place in one or another apartment and my father would often have to listen to the problems of our Jewish family and friends, and the State of Israel. My father was richly surrounded by Jewish friends that I have honored when their passings came. My dad was a man of few words when it came to lecturing Harvey & I, however, he always stressed family first. That meant when dad was home early for dinner, we were expected to be at the table. My Nana - Ruth Horne, greatly influenced our Jewish culture and traditions. Harvey and I were enriched through and through. I left for college in 1983 and began my life living in a large home with 27 or so roommates, Nana, Dad and Harvey sometimes came for dinner in colonial place area. Nana made sure I had candle sticks for the Sabbath and lit them! Harvey came to many college parties at this house and was ready to move when his time came for graduation. This is when Diane Amdurski came into our lives, Diane was a beautiful woman and made my father so very Happy. They traveled often to Atlantic City, often took in shows and were enriched with our local arts here in Norfolk. Diane completed our family and we were lucky to have her in our lives for 27 years before the pancreatic cancer took her from us. My father was a very simple man and did not need much to be happy. A good cigar, his newspaper, good cup of coffee, the remote for watching all his football, basketball, etc. and his 2 kids. My father was extremely proud of both Harvey and I. My brother married Sarah Armentrout and they had 2 beautiful children, Hannah & Holley Horne. Reggie and I were lucky that dad was able to attend our wedding, June 2022. However, it was then that his life drastically changed after falling and breaking his hip in the following week. My father lived his last 16 months at Leigh Hall in Norfolk VA. He had a best friend there, Mr. Gerry Jacobs who he ate with, played cards daily with and often on the computer together. My dad had the knack and gift of gab. My father loved people and he loved helping people plan the homes with decor. My father worked for Haynes furniture since before I was born in 1964, I can remember playing down stairs when Haynes was in downtown Norfolk and my mom would drive to pick him up. I would love to play in the room downstairs with all the toys for kids while parents shopped. Sometime early in the 80's my father went to work for the Adler's on VA Blvd. for Herman, and Adie Adler. I saw Ms. Adler recently at Beth El and a flood of memories came back to me and how she was often giving us kids advice before we talked to dad depending on how his day was going. Ms. Adler was another extended family member as well as her daughter Ann. Thank you all for reading to just a few words about my dad and our family. I loved all of these people and I will truly miss my dad no matter what, he tried his best with what he had, Harvey & I were loved and that is all that matters.Show more
