George Putman
Age - 86
November 29, 2023
Blacksburg-- Our beloved daddy, George Ronald Putman, age 86, met his Lord and Savior face-to-face on November 27, 2023, at Wendover Hospice House in Shelby, NC.
George was born on April 25, 1937, weighing in at 11 lbs, 14 oz. , the eighth of 11 children born to the late Hobert William and Nellie Dorman Putman. He loved his family and thoroughly enjoyed his time with them. Growing up, he was known for swimming in Dolittle Creek, switching the Blacksburg and Cowpens city limit signs, and driving fast. He was often known for being on the nose with the many stories he told. Daddy always wanted to be a blessing to others and leave them with a smile.
He is preceded in death by brothers Paul, Frank, and Edward (late Allie) and sisters Louise and Vinnie (Late Ed). He is survived by brother Charles Putman (late Beverly) of Gaffney, SC, sister Ruby Starnes (late Bill) of Blacksburg, sister Martha McCraw (late Ken) of Inman, SC, sister Carolyn Stacy (late Terry) of Blacksburg, SC, and brother Kenny (Betty Sue) Putman of Easley, SC. He had many nieces and nephews that he loved.
George served his country well. He was an Assistant Army Chaplain, and while stationed at Fort Knox, KT, no gold was stolen. He was Army-Strong! He was a Blacksburg Rural Mail Carrier for 46 years. He worked 33 years without taking a sick day and drove over 1 million miles without a preventable incident. He was a faithful member of Cherokee Falls Baptist Church and worked with the Handy Man Ministry. He loved his brothers and sisters in Christ and spent his retirement visiting and ministering to those in need.
George, the world's best daddy and granddaddy, is survived by his son, Greg Putman of Gaffney, SC, and daughter, Renee Dyer, and son-in-law, Robin, of Shelby, NC. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Matthew Wray, and great-grandchild, Ember Wray. He is survived by three grandchildren, T. J. Wray (Abigail) of Forsyth, MO, Laura Sullins (Niles) of Black Mountain, NC, and Nathan Wray (Brittani) of Shelby, NC, and seven great-grandchildren, Eliza and Grady Wray, Adriel and Ariel Sullins, and Luke, Remy, and Matthew Wray.
We would like to thank the kind and compassionate care of his Hospice nurses and staff, Joannie Mabry and Marie Bell, and the nurses and staff at Wendover Hospice House.
