She attended Fairfax Hall in Waynesboro, VA, followed by Pine Manor Junior College in Chestnut Hill, MA before transferring to UNC Chapel Hill, where she received a BA in History and met her future husband, Wally Joe (Joe) Shook from Hickory, NC. These are just a few of the many boards and committees she served on throughout her life. Her true passion, though, was her decades of volunteer service (56 years) to Catawba Valley Medical Center.
