Funeral services for Linda Dean, 72, of Athens are scheduled for 1:00 p. m. , Tuesday, October 10, 2023, at Fellowship Baptist Church of Athens with Bro. Randy Jones officiating. Private family graveside services will be held at Oaklawn Memorial Park, Athens under the direction of Hannigan Smith Funeral Home. Mrs. Dean went to be with her Lord and Savior on October 6, 2023, in Athens. Linda Gail Dean was born April 4, 1951, in Odessa, Texas, the daughter of George Vann and Margaret (Gilliam) Vann. She married Mike Dean in Odessa in 1970 where they lived until 1986 when they moved to DeSoto, TX, where she began teaching Pre-Kindergarten and later became Director of Childcare. In 1992 they moved to Athens, where Mike became Pastor of Fellowship Baptist Church. In 1994 she became Director of Weekday Education at First Baptist, Athens. Her love in life was her precious family and two children to whom she was fiercely devoted. One of Linda's many gifts were working with and teaching kids. More than anything, she loved teaching Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, Children's Church and AWANAS at Fellowship Baptist Church. Through those ministries God used her to influence numerous lives. She was a woman of tremendous faith, a loving mother and grandmother who will be greatly missed. She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Mike, of 53 years; two children, Kristi Frye and husband Jeff of Frisco and Kevin Dean and wife Jennifer of Houston; two sisters, Nancy Hicks and husband Bud of Athens, Connie Daniel and husband Steve of Lafayette, Louisiana; grandchildren, Alex and Abby Frye and Lilian Vera Dean; and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved dearly. A visitation will be held prior to the memorial service at Fellowship Baptist Church in Athens from 12-1:00 p. m. In lieu of flowers the family would like donations made in her memory to the Fellowship Baptist Church Saints in Ministry. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Hannigan Smith Funeral Home family.

Ralph "Shorty" Sholars passed away on November 13, 2023 at the age of 96. He was born in LaRue, Texas on June 4, 1927 to Roy and Letha Sholars. He passed away in Athens after a brief illness. He graduated from La Poynor High School and entered the U. S. Navy in 1944. He joined the Navy with his life-long friend Joe Haydon Miller. He served during World War II for 17 months and 3 days. He graduated with his Bachelors and Master's degrees from Texas A&M (Commerce) formerly known as East Texas State University. He played basketball at ETSU and was selected All-American. He was also proud of the fact he was selected "Team Captain" by his teammates. For many years he was a coach and educator in the Athens ISD. He was head basketball coach and head baseball coach as well as assistant football coach through the years with Athens ISD. After retiring from coaching, he taught World History and was best known for being the Drivers Education teacher. Through his many years he taught countless young people how to drive. He was known for his many slogans and saying's as well as his countless stories. Mr. Sholars is survived by his two children. Rev. Nick Sholars and his wife Marty of Hideaway, Texas. His daughter Celia Juanita Smith and her husband Larry of Houston, 3 grandchildren, Meredith Sholars Searcy and husband Josh of Longview, Grant Douglas Smith and wife Monica of Richmond, John Kent Sholars of Dallas, 4 great- grandchildren Luke and Levi Searcy of Longview, Jakob and Jocelyn Smith of Richmond, numerous nieces and nephews survive him as well. Pallbearers will be Marvin Miller, Sorrell Miller, Jordan Miller, Wayne Mitchell, Tommy Richardson, Dan Taylor and John Ellis Crossley. Visitation will be at Autry's Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home on Friday, November 17, 2023 from 5-7 P. M. Graveside services will be held at New York Cemetery on Saturday, November 18, 2023 at 2:00 P. M. A Celebration of the life of Kathy Fender, 61, of Athens will be held 6:00 pm, Thursday, November 16, 2023, at Hannigan Smith Funeral Home of Athens. Ms. Fender passed away on November 9, 2023, in Tyler. Katherine Marie Fender was born October 10, 1962, in Key West, Florida the daughter of Lonnie Dewayne Henry and Opal Marie (Baker) Stephens. Kathy was the owner of LaKat Trucking for 17 years along with her late husband Lonnie. She loved spending time on her farm, raising all of her critters, turkeys, horses, peacocks, chickens, dogs and a cat. Yaya loved her family and loved attending all her grandbabies activities she could. Yaya had a way of making you feel loved after meeting her for the first time. Kathy enjoyed giving back to the community, she had a servant heart and would always help anyone in need. She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband Lonnie Fender. Kathy is survived by her loving children Mandy Brittain and husband Josh of Monahans, Lee-boy Fender of Athens, Angel Woodard and husband Matt of Athens; siblings, Natalie Wymore and Lloyd of Athens, Becky Hankins of Athens, Bubba Henry and Shelly of Athens; sister-in-law Sharon Florence and Keith of Palestine; sister-in-law Lavon Burton and Mitch. Grandchildren, Hunter Brittain, Brayden Brittain, Rylan Brittain, Hannah Fender, Oakley Woodard, Laramie Woodard, and numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Along with friends who have become family. The family will be accepting visitors at the home of Kathy, starting at 1pm on Thursday. A celebration of the life of Woody Fain, 67, of Athens will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, November 18, 2023, at Athens Life Fellowship under the direction of Hannigan Smith Funeral Home. Woody Fain left his earthly home on November 10, 2023, in Tyler. Woody Fain was born March 1, 1956, in Dallas, Texas the son of Mansel Glen Fain and Jeraldeen (Weeks) Fain. He was a member of Life Fellowship Church of Athens, loved his Church family and spent many hours serving his Church in several areas. He enjoyed hanging out with his buddies, traveling but his true joy in life was loving his wife, Connie. Professionally he was a body man his entire career, working in numerous Cadillac dealerships all over the DFW metroplex and then for the last 5 years working on his own at Woody's Customs in Athens. Grandpa Woody was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, and brother who will be missed by all those who were blessed to have him in their lives. He was predeceased by his father and a brother Larry Fain He is survived by his loving wife Connie Fain of Athens and children, Wesley Fain and wife Christy of Pottsboro, Valerie Clark of Tyler, Jason Fain and wife Ashley of Heath, Dustin Fain and wife Alyssa of Anna; bonus children Rachel Supercinski and husband Thomas of College Station, Amanda Gilbertson and husband Eric of San Marcus, Jason Walker and wife Vy of McKinney; grandchildren, Wyatt Fain, Dylan Fain, Blake Clark, Bailey Clark, Travis Clark, Tyler Fain, Carson Fain, Kinsley Fain; bonus grandchildren Josiah Supercinski, Annalise Supercincki, Micah Supercinski, Silas Supercincki, Maris Walker, Evyn Walker, Lailiana Walker, Duncan Walker; brother Glen Fain and wife Katy of Weatherford and sister Barbara Judd and husband Henry of Waxahachie.
