Lillian Washington was born on November 27, 1951 to the loving late parents; Howard and Lillian Pitt's. Lillian was 1 of 9 Pitt children: Norma Edwards, Marguerite Green, Brenda Darby, Beverly Featherstone, Tawana Thomas, Howard, Waymond, Robert, and Roland Pitts. She is survived by her remaining 4 Sisters, Beverly Featherstone, Tawana Thomas, Annette Goodwin, Kimberly Sidbury. Howard and Lillian believed that family was very important and they instilled this truth in their 9 children. Lillian, met and married her teenage sweetheart Fred James Peterson III and they both welcomed their 4 beautiful children: Tyra Doucoure, Frednicia married to Noel Morris, Fred Peterson, Marquis Peterson. Lillian worked as a buyer for a prominent department store in the Maryland and DC area for a number of years. Lillian loved fashion and clothing and was known to purchase items of various sizes. Whether she could fit them or not. Family and friends alike would often shop her closets or basement to complete their wardrobe. Lillian was kind, generous and always willing to share. She never met a stranger, and if she did. They weren't strangers for long. Lillian and Fred raised their family while traveling abroad and stateside for his job, eventually they settled in Washington state where she worked for the State of Washington in an Administration position. Lillian went on to marry Calvin Washington and she gained a blended family with 3 loving stepdaughters; Denitsha, Jerrica, and Onika Washington. Later together she and Calvin welcomed their suppotive son Javin Washington. Lillian loved being a grandmother to her adoring grandchildren: Treonna, Alonzo, Tenajha,Taylor, Xavier, Nysirra, Zalonna, Zaheim, August, Akiym, Zarelle, Zyrionna and 5 great grandchildren. Calvin and Lillian relocated to Winston-Salem, NC in 2023 to discover a new adventures together. Although the journey was short the feeling of familiar joy was had by Lillian and Calvin until Lillian closed her eyes in death on Friday September 29, 2023. Lillian is survived and loved by a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws: Richard Washington, Elethia Washington, Beatrice Smith, Vanessa Toomer and friends. Mrs. Washington departed this life Friday September 29, 2023 at Trellis Supportive Care Center. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm Saturday October 7, 2023 in the chapel of Hooper Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 12:30pm-1:00pm Saturday at the funeral home. Her remains may be viewed Friday October 6, 2023 from 12pm-6pm at the funeral home. "Lil, the eldest daughter of seven (7) children was born February 2, 1934 in Davison County, N. C. to Russel and Blanche Thomas. Lil attended elementary schools in Midway, N. C, Lexington, N. C. , following Kimberely Park and Adkins High School in Winston Salem, N. C. She moved from Winston Salem, N. C. , to seek employment in Philadelphia, PA in 1955. She left at the age of 20 (twenty) years old and lived in Philadelphia for 12 years. It was in June 1967, she moved to Detroit, MI, and soon married Otis Ousley in 1975. Lil worked different jobs for a decade and landed a job at Ford Motor Company in 1977, where she worked as an Assembly Worker for 22 years and retired in December 1999. She loved to travel, spending time with UAW Members at picnics, loved attending church, and loved the Lord. While in Detroit, she was a member of New Providence Baptist Church, under the leadership of the late Rev. Solomon, where she was baptized. She was a member of New Providence for over 23 years and then moved her membership to the New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Dr. Wilma R. Johnson, where she served on the Circle of Sorrow and Hope Bereavement Board. After living in Detroit for over 40 years, retiring from Ford Motor Company, she returned home to Winston Salem, in 2007, being away for over 52 years. Lil purchased a home around the corner from her sister (Savannah), both attended church, and joined United Methodist Missionary Baptist Church (UMMBC), where she served on the Women's Missionary Board and a faithful member, loved by her church family. Lil was predeceased by her husband, Otis Ousley, mother and father (Russel and Blanche Thomas), and a host of other family members, Cynthia Thomas, Dejuan 'Peanut' Marshall, Charlie Frank Thomas, Savannah Thomas Jones, Henry Lewis Thomas and Bruce Lindsey. She leaves her precious and endearing memories to her beloved sister, Margie Thomas, other family members, Monike, Jade, Jalen, Arrington (Jamila), Iris (Patrick), Jane (Dennis), Denoris, Reginald, Voncille, Michael, Veniessa (Horace), Charlotte and Linda, and long list of great nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends. Robert Lee Pitts, Jr. passed away peacefully on December 2, 2023. He was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina to Robert Pitts, Sr. and Sandra Pitts. He was a graduate of North Forsyth High School. He spent his whole life in Winston-Salem, where he left an indelible mark on those who knew him. Robert had a passion for fishing and enjoyed being out in nature. Robert loved being out on the pier watching the waves crash on the sand. Robert also enjoyed being "ampa" to his five grandchildren who he loved deeply. Robert dedicated many of years to UPS and the Winston-Salem Journal. Robert was a gentle giant that never met a stranger. He was a selfless man who would have given his last to others. As a devoted Christian, Robert's faith played a significant role in his life, providing him with strength and guidance throughout his journey. Robert is survived by his three children, Taylor (Brittany) Pitts, Addison (Morgan) Franks both of Winston-Salem, NC and Robert Braden (Mackenzie) Pitts of Virginia Beach, VA; three sisters, Juanita Pitts, Sabrina (Morris) Garrett both of Winston-Salem, NC and Kimberly (Sean) Stafford of Durham, NC; five grandchildren, Braxton Flores-Pitts, Kingston Pitts, Zaydin Franks, Laylani-Lynn Franks, and Emerick Pitts; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral services will be held at 11:30am Saturday, December 9, 2023 at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dr. Kendall Jones, Sr. officiating. -Kenny Chesney Alex Jeremiah Wilson, 17, gained his wings on November 27, 2023 at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Health in Winston-Salem, NC. He was born in Winston-Salem, NC on August 24, 2006 to Tanya Wilson. Alex attended the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools in which he planned on graduating with the Parkland High School Class of 2024. Alex had a kind and generous spirit that led him to volunteer at the William C. Sims Recreation Center helping out with the neighborhood youth. Alex was curious, funny, and energetic from a young age. His smile would make you smile, and his laughter could fill a room. He had a strong passion for life. He wanted to travel and see the world. He loved sports and was a good athlete and would play football with his friends in the neighborhood. He enjoyed wrestling with his brothers and sister. He loved to eat and enjoyed his sister Mo's late night hook-up meals. He also favored "movie time" with his momma. -Unknown Alex was a part of a huge family and was always loved. In addition to his mother, he leaves behind his siblings, Alexander Wilson, Miocheo Wilson, and Elijah Wilson; a loving grandmother, Beaulah G. Wilson; loving aunts, Illa Jackson and Valiree Wilson; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends. Edward J. P. O'Connor was born March 17, 1937, in Highland Park, Illinois, while his father was stationed at Fort Sheridan, and raised on the family farm in Hancock, Wisconsin. In grade school, he took up the cornet and began the foundation of his career in music. He graduated from Wautoma (WI) High School and received a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from Northwestern University in 1959, where he had studied the French Horn. He was drafted into the U. S. Army and spent nearly a year and a half touring Europe with the Seventh Army Symphony Orchestra. He returned to Northwestern University, completing a Master of Music degree in 1962. During that time, he began to work as a freelance musician in Chicago. He made two national tours as solo horn with the Chicago Little Symphony under Thor Johnson, performed on several concerts with the Chicago Symphony, worked at Universal Recording Studio in Chicago, and became a member of the Chicago Lyric Opera Orchestra in 1963. In 1964 he married Carol Ann Meek, whom he had met at Northwestern. They moved to New York where he began doctoral work at Teachers College, Columbia University, while Carol Ann studied voice. In 1966 he joined a woodwind quintet in New York, the members of which taught at the University of Connecticut. In 1967 he assumed a full-time position at the University of Connecticut. In 1967 he assumed a full-time position at the University of Connecticut directing a research center. Upon completion of the Ed. D. in 1967, he joined the music faculty and in 1969, became assistant dean of the School of Fine Arts primarily responsible for student affairs. He served as assistant and associate dean for ten years. He felt that he highest compliment he received was from students who said, "We hear that you are the person who knows how to cut the red tape. " During that period, he also was engaged as an evaluator of public-school music and fine arts programs, a service that he continued throughout his career. He also became active in the Music Educators National Conference serving as chair of the state of higher education and multicultural sections. In 1979, he left the deans' office and became director of undergraduate studies for the Music Department, serving as a master advisor in addition to teaching courses in music education, research, and world music. As a member of the University Senate, he chaired the Curriculum and Faculty Standards Committees. Having become interested in music of world cultures, he joined the Society for Ethnomusicology, eventually serving as president of the Northeast Chapter and as the nation Chapter Chair. He was especially active in the education section of the Society, becoming one of the leading Figures in the movement for the inclusion of world music in public school curricula. He did workshops in public schools on international folk music and dances. Altogether he presented more than 50 papers for professional societies. In 1992 the Connecticut Music Educators Association named him music teacher of the year. Becoming especially interested in the music and dances of Czechoslovakia, he made this the primary focus of his research. On two sabbatical leaves, 1981 and 1988, he spent nearly a year in Czechoslovakia studying both classical vocal literature and folk songs. The second sabbatical was supported by a fellowship from the International Research and Exchanges Board. Subsequently, he performed a number of vocal recitals of the songs of Czechoslovakia as an outcome of his research on performance styles. He served as Dean of the School of Fine Arts for the 1991-92 academic year. He retired from the faculty in 1994. In 1996, he and Carol Ann moved to North Carolina. In 2000, for tutoring and other services that he did in an elementary school, he was named Volunteer of the Year by the county school system and received a Governor's Volunteer Award. Having joined Grace Moravian Church in Mount Airy, NC, he was elected to the Board of Christian Education for the Southern Province of the Moravian Church in 2002 and served as chair of the Commission on Church and Society. He was elected chair of the Board of Christian Education in 2006, serving for four years. These positions involved him in a number of affiliated organizations as well. Left behind to cherish his memory are his wife, Carol Ann O'Connor, and two daughters: Lauren Jungreis and husband Aaron of Ra'anana, Israel; and Cathryn Olson and husband Richard of Derby, KS. In addition, he was blessed with seven wonderful grandchildren: Tzvi Jungreis, Eliana Jungreis, Kalanit Jungreis, Gilad Jungreis, Henry Olson, Ferris Olson, and Liberty Eden Olson.
