Daniel "Dan" McNamara, age 95, of Bird Island, MN passed away on Saturday, December 2, 2023 at Bethesda of Willmar. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, December 9, at 11:00 a. m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bird Island with Rev. George Schmit as officiant. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday, December 8 from 4 to 6 p. m. at Dirks-Blem Funeral Home in Olivia and will continue one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Mary's Catholic School and a Hospice organization of your choice. Daniel Henry McNamara was born on October 21, 1928 to Henry and Ellen (Wagemaker) McNamara on the family farm in rural Bird Island. He graduated from Olivia High School in 1947 and continued his education at the Minneapolis Business School. Dan served his country in the United States Air Force from 1951 to 1955. Dan met the love of his life, Mary Ann Meyer at the Scott Air Force Base in Belleville, IL. They were united in marriage on November 26, 1955 at St. Peters Cathedral in Belleville, IL. They made their home on the family farm in rural Bird Island where they raised their seven children. Together they enjoyed golfing, dancing, and playing cards with their card clubs. They also enjoyed traveling; their favorite place being Naples, FL where they wintered for 35 years. In 1989, Dan and Mary moved into town and even though you can take the farmer off the farm, you can't take the farm out of the farmer. Dan enjoyed combining so much it became known as his "happy place" every fall until 2018 after he celebrated his 90th birthday. Dan was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Bird Island Lions Club, and American Legion. He was a faithful member of St. Mary's Catholic Church serving as a communion minister and lector. Dan leaves behind a legacy of faith, family, and farming. Dan is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Mary Ann; his children: Linda (Rick) Beckler, Karen (Jeff) Weis, Mike (Nancy) McNamara, Enid (Ken) Jacobson, Chris (John) Kinzel, Scott (Lisa) McNamara, and Erin (Joe) Gebhardt; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Matthew (Anna) Beckler, Jeremy (Anna) Beckler and their children, Jayce and Miles, Jenna (Carl) Skoglund and their children, Landon, Lucy, and Jackson, Sara (Josh) Zupfer and their children, Waylon and Lainey, Jami (Jon) Gubbels and their children, Lola and Cohen, Calli (Jamie) Wagner and their children, Elliott and Holden, Thomas (Danielle) Jacobson and their child, Grady, Renae (Jared) Brenner and their children, William, Henry, and Jasper, Josh Kinzel, Benjamin Kinzel, Anna Kinzel, Stephanie (Curtis) Campbell, Elizabeth (Michael) Schlegelmilch and their children, Gabriel and Lincoln, Nicholas McNamara, Dan Gebhardt, Claire Gebhardt, and Jack Gebhardt; his siblings, Helen McCormick and Jim McNamara; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Jim Russel Portinga passed away peacefully with his family by his side on November 30th, 2023. Jim graduated from Willmar High School in 1948 and served in the Navy during the Korean war from 1950 to 1954. After his service he attended the University of Minnesota, majoring in Poultry Nutrition and Business. Jim met Shirley, the love of his life, in 1955 at a Robbins Island Picnic and they were married for 67 and a half wonderful years. Jim had a varied career in business and poultry. He started working at Allstate Hatchery at an early age, which was the family business. Jim was most proud of developing a visionary computer program for poultry nutrition which was used to formulate feeding programs for over 70 million poultry in the US and Japan. His entrepreneurial spirit accompanied his life of hard work. He designed a new trailer hitch, winning first place at the Minnesota inventor's congress. Jim also drafted house plans for several of his own homes and for others. He always said, "The only thing worse than working is looking for work. " In his later years Jim continued his work ethic, including a career working in a photo department. Jim and Shirley lived in three different communities: Willmar, Big Lake and Branson, building community and lifelong friendships wherever they lived. As a couple they traveled extensively throughout North America, South America, Europe, and Japan. Jim loved his family. He is survived by his wife Shirley; their four children: Tim and Laura Portinga of Eden Prairie, Todd and Kris Portinga of Welch, Cindy and Lincoln Clements of Willmar, and Chris and Krista Portinga of Maplewood. Jim was especially fond of his 9 grandchildren: Nicole, Holly, Tyler, Johanna, Stephen, Jon, Jenna, Jake and Sam and 16 great grandchildren. The whole family gathered this past summer for a wonderful two-day reunion. Jim was welcomed into heaven by his parents, Rich and Grace Portinga, brother Dean Portinga, niece Judy Portinga and nephew Terry Portinga. A memorial service will be held at First Covenant Church of Willmar, Minnesota on January 6th, 2024 at 11am with visitation one hour before. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred. Obituary Ronald Blowers, age 88, of Benson, passed away Tuesday, October 17, 2023, at the Centra Care Care Center in Willmar, Minnesota. Visitation will be from 12:30 - 2:00 p. m. , Saturday, October 21, 2023, at Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church in Benson, followed by the funeral service at 2:00 p. m. at the church. Pastor Erik Rundquist will officiate. Interment will be in the Parkers Prairie Cemetery at a later date. The arrangements are with Zniewski Funeral Home in Benson. Ronald Roy Blowers was born on June 15, 1935, in Fairhaven, Minnesota, the son of Glen and Annette (Fischer) Blowers. He grew up in Fairhaven, Minnesota, Washington State, and Hackensack, Minnesota. He graduated from Buffalo High school in Buffalo, Minnesota. Ronald served the United States by enlisting in the U. S. Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Alaska and served in the Military Police. On July 27, 1957, Ronald was united in marriage to Leona Olson by the Rev. B. J. Holms in Murdock, Minnesota. They made their home in several places including Buffalo, MN, Navarre, MN, Saga Hill-Mound, MN, Watertown, MN, Parkers Prairie, MN, Dubois WY, Murdock, MN and Benson, MN. He worked for several places including Thompson Oil Company in Navarre, Cox Brothers Ready Mix in Chanhassen, Farmed near Parker's Prairie, Motel Manager in Dubois, Wyoming, Magnuson Sheet Metal in Willmar, and for Magnuson Farms in Pennock. Ronald was a member of the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Swift Falls where he served as an usher. He enjoyed playing cards, fishing, reading, making diamond willow canes, and loved raising and watching birds. He especially loved spending time with family and friends, and he relished his time visiting with friends and neighbors underneath the gathering tree at their home. He was called from this life on Tuesday morning, October 17, 2023, at the Cushman Cottage in the Centra Care Nursing Home in Willmar. He attained the age of 88 years, 5 months, and 2 days of age. Ronald is survived by his wife Leona of Benson; daughters Robin (Mike) Curtis of Osakis and Sue (Tom) Klavetter of Spicer; a son, Scott Blowers of Miltona; grandchildren, Andrew (Vanessa) Curtis, Jaci (Adam) Christiansen, Jordan (fiance Abby Kack) Klavetter, and Jacob Klavetter; and a great grandchild Hattie Klavetter; a brother, Terry (Lori) Blowers of Libby, Montana, brother-in-law Don (Viola) Olson of Benson; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents Glen and Annette, a son Doug, brothers, Jerry (Evon) Blowers and Don (Carol) Blowers, brothers-in-law Russell (Lucy) Olson and Ardell (Margie) Olson, Blessed be his memory.
