Susan P. Duarte, lifelong resident of Deming, has entered eternal rest on February 12, 2024. Susan, or “Susie”, was a warm and inviting person. She was well known for her cooking and baking, especially her popcorn balls and biscochos, which people could never eat just one. Susie would cook for events, parties and just to sell and share her love for making good food, often wrangling in her sisters and family to help! When she wasn’t cooking meals her other hobbies included canning homemade jams, fruit butters, and chiles, playing bingo and laughing with her loved ones. She looked forward to the Holy Family klobase bingo to win her family a turkey for thanksgiving, which she did every year. She will be greatly missed in many ways. Susie was born to Concha Parra and Frank Allison Peña Sr. On February 22, 1962. She is survived by her loving husband Victor Duarte of Deming, three sisters; Margaret Prince (Carlos) of California, Monica Prieto of Las Cruces, and Betty Lynch (Jimmy) of Deming; three brothers, Frank Peña Jr (Gloria) of Deming, Richard Peña Sr of Deming, and Michael Peña (Lupita) of Albuquerque. She is preceded in death by both her parents, Concha and Frank Peña, and two sisters Rosemary A. Peña and Lucinda P. Pena. Visitation will be on Thursday, February 15th 2024 from 10 AM to 11 AM, with a celebration of life beginning at 11 AM at Bacas. Vicki Agusta Wagonseller-Perry, 71, passed away on February 4, 2024, in Deming, New Mexico. She was born on March 5, 1952, in Lamesa, Texas. Vicki attended schools in Lubbock, TX and graduated from Monterey High School. She attended Texas Tech for a period of time and then enrolled in the Dallas Merchandizing School. She was an accomplished photographer, lapidary and jewelry designer. Vicki spent the last 20 years in the Alamogordo area and was a volunteer with the Oro Grande fire department. Survivors include her husband, Greg Perry; her sons and their spouses, Lukas Wilbur, Nelson Wilbur and Gus Wagonseller-Wilbur; seven grandchildren and one great grandchild; sister, Elizabeth Wagonseller. She was preceded in death by her parents, Billie Kent and Charlene Jane Wagonseller, and sister, Debralyn Kay Wagonseller. Lucinda P. Pena, lifelong resident of Deming, has gone to be with her lord and savior February 1st, 2024. Lucinda, or “Cindy” as many knew her; was a devout woman of Christian Faith. Cindy dedicated countless hours to reading the word of God and studying his teachings. She loved to share what she learned with all her friends and family. When she wasn’t reading she enjoyed baking fresh breads, rolls, galletas, and tortillas. She especially loved baking around the holidays after she decorated her entire house. Her other favorite pass times included bingo, crosswords, phase 10, arts and crafts and retelling stories of the past. Cindy was a simple woman who didn’t require much other than her family and those she held close to her heart, especially her daughter, Cheyenne Pena, who she loved and adored. Cindy was born to Concha Parra and Frank Allison Peña Sr. On October 8th, 1963. She is survived by her daughter, Cheyenne Peña and her husband Zachariah Porter of Deming, three brothers, Frank Peña Jr (Gloria) of Deming, Richard Peña Sr of Deming, and Michael Peña (Lupita) of Albuquerque; four sisters Susan Duarte (Victor) of Deming, Margaret Prince (Carlos) of California, Monica Prieto of Las Cruces, and Betty Lynch (Jimmy) of Deming; as well as many nieces and nephews. Hal B. Keeler

Hal B. Keeler, 95, peacefully passed away at his residence on Tuesday, January 30, 2024 where he had lived for the past 60 years. He is survived by his three children Nasa Speer (Bill), Dirk Keeler (Jeannie) and Tya Taylor (Clay); twelve grandchildren Garilee Speer Ogden, Shay Speer Charles, Dane Speer, Garan Keeler, Truitt Keeler, Codi Keeler Dutson, Taylor Keeler Moore, Sam Taylor, Keeler Taylor, Chase Taylor and Caden Taylor. He had 22 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. Hal was preceded in death by his grandson, Ky Speer and his wife of 67 years, Joyce Keeler. Hal moved to the Deming area from Columbus with his family in 1939. He began farming with his father after he graduated high school. He owned and operated his own farm in his early 20’s. Later, he set a world record with Dekalb Seed Company as the first person to harvest more than 200 bushels per acre in the grain sorghum business. Hal said, “Success is a matter of determination, not a matter of opportunity.” In their younger years, Hal and his brother, James Keeler also ran a partnership farming operation and swine finishing unit. Hal married Joyce P. Truitt in 1950 and raised their three children in Luna County. Their home became a true family gathering place to celebrate many holidays, birthdays, reunions, and weddings. Hal was extremely innovative and never afraid to try anything. He worked with his son, Dirk, in their sub-surface drip irrigation business. Being a forerunner in conservation they converted over 10,000 acres to drip irrigation in New Mexico and surrounding states. Mr. Keeler built a produce shed and ran it with the help of his daughter, Nasa. His son-in-law Bill Speer, farmed with Hal for 20 years. Hal served in many capacities on the boards of Luna Cotton Co-Op, First New Mexico Bank, Mimbres Memorial Hospital, Farm Bureau, Columbus Electric Co-Op, and Tri-State Electric (Denver, CO). His first and foremost love was his faith in Jesus Christ and his Heavenly Father. Hal was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He served as Branch President, Bishop, High Council Member, Stake Presidency Counselor, and was made the first Stake President charged with organizing the Silver City, NM Stake. He stayed busy until his death, actively and happily engaged in the service of others. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2024, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1000 W. Florida St, Deming, NM. There will be a viewing at the church from 9 to 10 o’clock in the morning. The funeral service will begin at 10, followed by interment at Mountain View Cemetery. The public is invited to attend.
