Helen Christine Smith, 92, of Louisville, Kentucky departed this life on Thursday, November 30, 2023 at Baptist Health of Louisville. Born on Sunday, December 21, 1930 in Springfield, Kentucky, Helen was the daughter of the late Forrest A. Carrico & Mary E. Smith. She was a member of St. Athanasius Catholic Church for over 63 years. Helen retired from Methodist Hospital & then J. C. Penney. She was also a former square dancer and member of the Kentuckiana Square Dancers Association. Besides her parents, Forrest & Mary Carrico; her husband, James J. Smith, Sr. ; son, Jim Smith, Jr. ; 6 - brothers; 1 - grandson & 1 - great - grandson, precede Helen in her passing. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Betty Dennis, Chris (Bill) Schardein, Dot (Dan) Thurman, Paul (Vickie) Smith, Wayne (Teri) Smith & Mike Smith; 14 - grandchildren; 16 - great - grandchildren; 2 - great - great - grandchildren; daughter - in - law, Judy Smith; brother, Jimmie; 3 - sisters, Isabelle, Rudy & Louise; plus, a host of other relatives & friends to mourn her passing. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, December 6, 2023 at 10:00 a. m. at St. Athanasius Catholic Church. Following services, Helen will be laid to rest in the Court of St. Paul Mausoleum of the Evergreen Cemetery & Garden Mausoleums, where she will rest alongside her husband for eternity. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 5, 2023 from 4:00 - 8:00 p. m. at the Evergreen Funeral Home. Born in Jefferson County, KY on December 25, 1948 to Myrtle (VanderEspt) and Elvin Hicks. Sandra was the Matriarch of the Vertrees Family which operated Kentucky Motor Speedway in Whitesville, KY, Charlestown Speedway in Charlestown, IN, Louisville Motor Speedway in Louisville, KY, Kentucky Speedway in Sparta, KY, Lake Erie Speedway in Lake Erie, PA. \u0026amp; Iowa Speedway in Newton, IA. She also served the community of Jefferson County as part of the civilian staff at The Jefferson County (KY) Sheriffs Office. Sandra was a hairdresser and owned \u0026amp; operated a successful Real Estate Company developing subdivisions throughout the Louisville Metro Area. She was preceded in death by her parents, Myrtle and Elvin; sister, Arlene Barker, brother, Donnie Hicks, and brother, Roger Hicks. She is survived by her devoted husband of 57 years, Charles Andrew "Andy" Vertrees; children, Charles "Buddy" Vertrees, Jr. (Dana Eads) and Lisa Heidenreich (Greg Wesley); grandchildren, David Heaton, Jr. (Julia Nitishin) , Halie Vertrees, Christopher and Nate Heidenreich, \u0026amp; Conner Wesley; great granddaughter, Vittoria (Tori) Aubrey Brielle Heaton; and sisters, Bobbie Aubrey (John), Judy Eaton, Sherry Williams, Peggy Beard (David). Makenzi Elizabeth Sweet, 24, of Orleans, Indiana passed away November 28, 2023 in Louisville, Kentucky. She was born April 18, 1999 in Paoli, IN to David Sweet and Whitni Goodpaster. She was preceded in death by maternal great grandfather Ray Knight, paternal great grandfather David Parsley, and paternal great grandmother Barbara Chandler. She graduated with the Orleans High School class of 2018. Makenzi was passionate, kind, and loving with the biggest heart. She never met a stranger. She loved her family and would go to no end to keep them safe. She always led with her heart first. Her hugs were warm and without end. Her smile was radiant and her laugh filled the room. If you were lucky enough to know her, then you knew what a blessing that was. She is and was a light-she was everything. Edward Carl Grant Jr. (Ed), 81, of Louisville, KY died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2023, at his home surrounded by family after a long battle with cancer. He was born May 1, 1942 to Edward Carl Grant Sr. and Adrienne Grant (Schevetto), and was reared since age 4 in Louisville, KY by Phillip Schevetto Sr. and Adrienne Schevetto. Ed served as a proud veteran of the US Navy from 1960 to 1964 where he gained expertise as an electrician, gaining recognition in his field. He had many fond memories of working as a flight mechanic on helicopters on the USS Intrepid and his time on the Naval Base in the Azores. During his time in the Navy, Ed married his high school sweetheart Patricia (Pat) Summers in 1963 and cherished 60 years of love and marriage. After serving in the Navy, he took his talents to a series of elevator companies including KM White, Fairhall, Armor, and Kone before opening his own business, ETS in 1996. He was a member of the International Union of Elevator Constructors (IUEC Local 20). Ed was known for his "tough but fair" leadership style, immense determination, and ability to "trouble shoot" any problem that came his way. In retirement, Ed's passion was training, riding, and caring for his horses. He enjoyed sharing his love of horses with Pat, his children, and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Pat Grant; daughters Melody Reibel (Michael) and Carla Wallace; grandchildren, Vic Reibel, Olivia Reibel, Julia Reibel, Joshua Reibel and Brooke Wallace; and siblings, Phyllis Conrey, Phillip "Sonny" Schevetto Jr. (Kathy), Patricia "Patty" Combs (Kennie); He is predeceased by his father, Edward Carl Grant Sr. , mother, Adrienne Schevetto, stepfather, Phillip Schevetto Sr. , brother-in-law, Jim Conrey, and son-in-law, Eric Wallace. Funeral mass is 10am Tuesday, December 5, 2023 at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 5505 Bardstown Road. Following mass a celebration of life will be held at Fern Creek Funeral Home, 5406 Bardstown Road concluding with a time of remembrance and military honors at 1pm.
