We are sad to announce the passing of James A. "Moots" Pluth of Ely, MN. Jim passed peacefully, on 20 October 2023, in his home with his family by his side. He was born on 11 Aug, 1939, in Ely, MN, son to Steve & Rose (Mavetz) Pluth, where he spent his childhood years. Jim graduated from Ely High in 1958, shortly after, he enlisted in the United Sates Army, where he served three years defending his country while he traveled abroad. After the Army, he worked as an Electrician for Reserve Mining Company in Babbitt, while also serving as a local businessman/owner of "Moots" Liquor in Ely. He then changed career paths and worked at Ely Memorial High as their custodian. Jim met the love of his life Mary and raised three children growing up in Ely. His hobbies included fishing & bowling, while he also held a special passion for serving as Treasure, Ely/Winton historical society, and Ely Honor Guard. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary (Morton) Pluth; brother, Richard Pluth of Chicago; children Greg (Jackie) Pluth of Ely, daughter Alicia (Bill) Ladd of Grand Forks, ND, & William (Christine) Pluth of East Grand Forks, MN; nieces & nephews, Katie, Patrick & Chrissy Pluth of Chicago, Jason & Kevin Dargontina of Minneapolis; grandchildren, Amelia, Alexander, & Madison Pluth. He was preceded in death by his parents Steve & Rose Pluth, and sister Judith Susie Dargontina of Ely. Gerald Charles Fuhrmann, 83, of Ely, formerly of St. Paul, moved heavenly to meet his wife on October 10th. Born in St. Paul, MN on April 18, 1940 to Oswald and Rose (Thell) Fuhrmann, he worked at Ancker Hospital in the Purchasing, Supply, and Issuance Department as a stock room helper and pasteurizing assistant. He was in JROTC, graduating from Cretin High School in 1958. His brother suggested he date nurses so he took one on a date. It didn't work out well, but she had a friend (nursing school roommate) that she wanted to connect him with, resulting in a blind date and he met the love of his life, Anna. In 1963 he graduated with a BS in Chemistry from the U of MN, enlisted in the Air Force becoming a Numbered Supply Account Officer, and married Anna E. Schick in St. Paul. Gerald served his nation for six years in active duty and in the Air Force Reserves for 37 years, starting as a Second Lieutenant. He was at Officer's Training School Lowry AFB in CO, and worked as an Aerospace Munitions Officer at Kincheloe AFB in Ml, and in Pacific Air Force at Hickam AFB in Hawaii. He inspected bases in the Philippines, Vietnam, and Thailand. He then returned to MN, was in the National Guard in Duluth, Air Force Reserves in Minneapolis, and worked with the Civil Air Patrol eventually retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in 2000. He attended the U of MN Institute of Technology in Advanced Spectrometry Chemistry and the U of MN School of Public Health and was employed as a radiological chemist at the MN Department of Health. He earned his Masters of Public Health, collected, tested, and analyzed water, fish, and milk samples for radiation, was on call for any disasters, plus became a registered sanitarian. He dutifully kept his wife company before she left for her midnight nursing shift and waited for her call to make sure that she got there safely, before returning to bed for her entire nursing career. He prayed with his wife every evening, loved his Creator, and cheerfully insisted that his prayers were always answered. He served his church at St. Gregory the Great and Lumen Christie in St. Paul, as a Eucharistic Minister, Sacristan, Lector, and Altar Server once retired and was always willing to help his daughter's family with projects such as fencing, rotor tilling, and lawn mowing. His wife had a severe hemorrhagic stroke in Dec 2016 and he stayed consistently at her side 14 hours a day until her passing 10 months later. He moved to Ely in 2017 because his greatest other joy was to be near his daughter and her family. After his wife's passing, he read books quickly, shopped at Ace Hardware with grandkids, went to museums and requested trips to Costco. His new favorite activities became mochas with his family, heading to the GEL for blueberry pancakes or cream of chicken wild rice soup, and Northwoods Partners Wednesday Men's group. Gerry leaves behind his daughter, Theresa Thompson (Craig), and his grandchildren Maxibillion, Bethany Rose, and Shepard Hank Thompson. Other survivors include brother Ralph and sisters Bernice (Maurer) and Virginia. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna (Schick) and parents, and brother-in-law, James Maurer. A celebration will be Tuesday, October 24th at 1 p. m. at LedgeRock Church. Interment will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in the future. Lana Marie Tuthill December 9, 1941 - October 15, 2023 Lana Marie Tuthill , 81 of Ely, MN passed away peacefully on Sunday October 15th at Carefree Living in Babbit, MN. She was born on December 9th, 1941 in Winton, MN to Ken and Helvi Christian. Throughout her life Lana worked very hard to provide love and support for her family and friends and received such incredible joy making them happy with great love and kindness. Lana truly had a gift to light up an entire room with her beautiful smile and big heart. Lana started out working at the Winton Hospital as a kitchen aid, cleaned rooms at the Lakeland Motel, and in the cafeteria at the Ely school district. She found her passion working as a para professional in Ely, this was a role that she was exceptionally gifted in. Students long since out of school would greet her and chat with a big hug, Lana retired early to care for her parents. Lanas greatest joy was her family, friends, and being a homemaker. She loved to fish and camp where she enjoyed numerous trips always trying to catch the "big one", and she did. The most important role in her life was sharing love and laughter with her husband, children, and grandchildren. We will all cherish the precious time we had with her. We will continue to be kind to others everyday as you did! Lana married her husband Gary Tuthill on August 18th, 1962 in Ely, MN where they resided. Russell, KS 67665 785-483-2212 Natoma, KS 67651 785-885-4221 Robert Charley "Basswood Bob" Oliva (62) was born on September 27, 1960 in Plainville, Kansas, to Ruth Lee (Price) and Charley Robert Oliva. Tragically, Bob lost his life in an automobile accident near his home in Ely, Minnesota, on August 24, 2023. Raised in Russell, Kansas, Bob was no stranger to adventures with his siblings. From a young age, you could find him making any excuse to visit Lake Wilson to fish or water ski. He continued his passion for the outdoors as a member of the local boy scout troop, where he made memories each year, becoming an Eagle Scout in 1979. Bob graduated from Russell High School in 1979, and from Pittsburgh State University in 1983. He gained the skills and knowledge of an experienced carpenter and was known for his attention to detail and love for the craft. Bob was a cherished member of the Ely community. His passion for the outdoors led him to create lasting memories for others through guided fishing tours, which started in the 1980's when he was employed by Charles L Sommers Canoe Base, and dogsledding tours on the Boundary Waters. He was also a handyman and carpenter. Bob will be remembered for his warm-hearted nature, his sense of adventure, his sly sense of humor, and his commitment to sharing the beauty of the wilderness with others. He leaves behind a legacy of joy, exploration, and a deep connection to the natural world - having spent his final days with several of his siblings doing what he loved. Proceeding in his death are his parents, and adoptive father, Boyd Knackstedt. Bob leaves behind adoptive mother June Knackstedt, Russell, KS and eight siblings - Bud Knackstedt, Russell, KS; Nancy (Wayne) Woodyard, Hutchinson, KS; Dennis (Beth) Knackstedt, Golden, MO; James (Debra) Oliva, Topeka, KS; Barbara Volle, Axtell, KS; David Goza, Deborah (Don) Johnson, and Alvin Goza, Emporia, KS; and many other family members, friends, and neighbors. Although he had no children, Bob proudly cared for many huskies in his life, most recently Vera and Ima which have been re-homed in the community. Services for Bob will be held at 10:00 AM, Friday, September 15, 2023, at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas. Burial will follow at the Russell City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Thursday, September 14, 2023, at , with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. A Celebration of Life will be held later in Ely, MN. Memorials have been established with the Russell Boy Scout Troop #118 and the Charles L Sommers Alumni Association.
