Leonard W. Kirkhoff passed away peacefully in the early hours of Easter Sunday morning April 9, 2023, in the CLC Unit of the VA Hospital in Fargo, ND. Leonard was born in Valley City, ND on June 16, 1925, to Warren and Josephine (Schlagel) Kirkhoff. He grew up in Fingal, ND where he attended grade school and high school, graduating in 1943. In the fall of 1943, Leonard was drafted into the U. S. Army. He was sent to Fort Hood for basic training, then spent some time in the states before going overseas with the 12541 Combat Engineers Battalion. He fought for a year and a half in England, France, and Belgium. He stayed in Europe until April 1946 and then was shipped home and discharged as a Private First Class. Leonard then attended NDSU and NDSSS and obtained an electrical degree. In 1949, he was hired by Cass County Electric where he worked in many capacities in Kindred, Valley City and West Fargo for 37 years until his retirement in 1985. On June 16, 1952, Leonard married Bernice Hartl in Alice, ND. They had one daughter, Paula. They lived in Kindred, Valley City and West Fargo while he was employed. Leonard was an active member of the American Legion, VFW, and Elks Clubs. He also served as President of the Chamber of Commerce. After retirement, Leonard and Bernice split their time between West Fargo ND, West McDonald Lake MN, and Lake Havasu City AZ. He loved to keep a meticulous lawn and tinkering in his garage. He was always ready for a game of dice or cards, too! After Bernice's death, he resided at Park Avenue Apartments where his friends were his second family. He leaves behind his daughter, Paula and son-in-law Keith Kolle and a step-granddaughter Nichole Kolle. He is also survived by one cousin and numerous nieces and nephews.
