Leona Mae (Hopsecker) Laursen, age 99, of Sioux Center, Iowa (formerly of Battle Creek, Iowa) passed away on Friday, September 8, 2023, at the Sioux Center Health of Sioux Center, Iowa. A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p. m. , Thursday, September 14, 2023, at the First Presbyterian Church of Battle Creek, Iowa. Rev. Kevin J. Freese will officiate. Committal Services will follow in the Mt. Hope Cemetery of Battle Creek, Iowa. A Visitation will be held one-hour prior to the service from 1:00 p. m. to 2:00 p. m. , on Thursday, September 14, 2023, at the First Presbyterian Church of Battle Creek, Iowa. The Christensen-Van Houten Funeral Home of Battle Creek, Iowa, is in charge of the funeral arrangements. Leona Mae Laursen was born to Harry and Gladys (Beachler) Hopsecker on March 27, 1924, in Mapleton, Iowa. She grew up, attended school and graduated from high school in Mapleton. For several years she worked at Fishgall's Department Store in Sioux City, Iowa. She and Earl Laursen were married in 1946. When Earl was discharged from the U. S. Army, the couple began their life together, farming outside of Battle Creek, Iowa. A son, Larry and daughter, Bonnie, were born to the couple. Leona was a dedicated member of the First Presbyterian Church in Battle Creek. She was involved with United Presbyterian Women activities, assisted with the church newsletter as well as the turkey supper, and helped parishioners in many ways throughout her life. She was committed to her family, friends, faith, and community. She was preceded in death by her husband Earl Laursen; son Larry Laursen; sister Mary Lou Ladwig; son-in-law Jim Johnson; two brothers-in-law; a sister-in-law; and a niece. Survivors include her daughter Bonnie (Denny) Ruden of Sioux Center, IA; daughter-in-law Peggi Laursen of Ames, IA; the Mullins family of Battle Creek, IA, two nieces and a nephew. Grateful appreciation to Friendly Horizons, where Leona lived for the past two years.

A memorial service will be 11:00 a. m. Friday, October 20, 2023, at Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center, IA with Rev. Katherine Russell, officiating. Military honors will follow at the Veterans Memorial in Sioux Center. Visitation will be Friday, October 20, 2023, with his family present, one hour prior to the memorial service, at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center. Shawn Mark Huisman was born December 26, 1970, at Sioux Center, IA the son of David and Rhonda (Ghea) Huisman. Shawn grew up at Sioux Center where he attended and graduated from Sioux Center High School in 1989. Shawn was united in marriage to Rhonda (Aldrich) on December 30, 1989, at Hope Lutheran Church at Sioux Center. He proudly graduated from St. Cloud State University in 2019. For many years, Shawn worked in law enforcement and public safety, as dispatcher, jailer, and patrol officer, and most recently with the Stearns County Sheriff's Department for the last 5 years. Shawn served in the Marine Corps from 1990-1997 and as a veteran of the Gulf War, and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, and numerous other medals and honors in his time in the Marine Corps. Shawn was involved in Boy Scouts, VFW, YMCA, and the Victory for Veterans memorial ride in Indiana. He was an Eagle Scout and was on the dean's list at St. Cloud State University. Shawn was a quietly funny man who could always spark a laugh in those around him. He deeply loved his wife of 33 years through all the tribulations of life and oriented his career around the service of his country, community, and family.Show more

Roy Nielsen, Jr. DVM, age 93, of Mesa, Arizona, formerly from Sioux Center, Iowa, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, November 21, 2023. Visitation with the family present will be December 5th from 3:00 - 4:30 pm followed by a Celebration of Life service at Memorial Funeral Home with Pastor Jeff Whitt officiating. Roy Nielsen, Jr. was born on October 4, 1930, to Roy, Sr. and Elva (Urban) Nielsen in Bismarck, North Dakota. He was the oldest of 3 children. He was educated in Mercer, North Dakota, and graduated at age 16 from Mercer High School in 1946. He graduated in 1951 with a B. S. in Biology and a minor in Education from Concordia College at Moorhead, Minnesota. He continued his education at Kansas State in 1951 with a scholarship in Biology and Endocrinology for two years. He was drafted into the U. S. Army during the Korean War and was stationed at Camp Pickett, Virginia; then he went on to Murphy Army Hospital in Waltham, Massachusetts. After two years in the service, he received an honorable discharge on September 8th, 1955. Roy, Jr. went on to Kansas State College in Manhattan, Kansas, where he received his DVM degree in 1959. After being in practice in Worthington, Minnesota, and George, Iowa, he moved to Sioux Center, Iowa, in 1974. He became part owner of the Sioux Center Veterinary Clinic and had a large animal and sale barn practice. His claim to fame was that he preg-checked more Holstein cattle than anyone in the country during that time. He also oversaw many 24-hour plus cattle dipping operations. Roy, Jr. DVM sold his veterinary practice in 1989 and started Revival Animal Health in the basement of his home. He is the namesake for the Doc Roy's line of pet supplements. On March 16, 1957, Roy Nielsen, Jr. was united in marriage to Helen "Louise" L'Huillier in Manhattan, Kansas. They were married and blessed with six children. Throughout their marriage, they were able to travel to many places both in this country and abroad. Roy and Louise loved their trips to Israel, Hawaii, and the Cayman Islands. The adventures they shared will live on as wonderful memories. In 2008, he moved to Mesa, Arizona, and resided there until his death. Roy, Jr. is survived by his six children, Roy Nielsen, III of Sioux Falls, SD; Elva (Rodney) Wells of Sioux Center, IA; Thomas Nielsen of Canton, SD; Karen (Larry) Miedema of Sioux Center, IA; Jennifer (Todd) Van Briesen of Sioux Center, IA; and Jean-Paul Nielsen of Elk Point, SD. He is also survived by his 10 grandchildren, Stephanie (Kyle) Den Herder, Brian Nielsen, Nathan (Becky) Miedema, David Miedema, Mark Miedema, Roy Nielsen, IV (Drew), Chyann (Grant) Zevenbergen, Corbin Van Briesen, Gabrielle Nielsen, and Liam Nielsen; as well as seven great-grandchildren, Taya Den Herder, Jayden Miedema, Bennett Miedema, Alex Miedema, Hudson Den Herder, Audrey Zevenbergen, and Prynce Van Briesen. Arlene Van Voorst, age 75 of Sioux Center, Iowa died Wednesday, September 20, 2023, at the Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. A prayer service will take place prior to the memorial service at 9:00 AM at Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center. Interment will follow the Prayer service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, September 23rd, at the Netherlands Reformed Church in Rock Valley, Iowa with Rev. J. J. Witvoet officiating. Arlene Mae Van Voorst was born to Al and Reva (Maassen) Van Den Berg in LeMars, Iowa on March 5, 1948. She attended country school until grade 5 and graduated from Rock Valley High School in 1966. After graduating she worked for the Sioux Center Hospital and Otis Radio factory in Hawarden, Iowa. On January 10, 1968, Arlene married Wayne Van Voorst and the couple lived in Sioux Center. Wayne's National Guard unit was activated, and Arlene joined him in Colorado Springs. When Wayne was deployed to Vietnam she returned to live with her parents until his return. The couple made their home in Sioux Center. Arlene was very involved in the family business until her first of four heart attacks at age 47. She very much enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and made a strict point that all were treated equally. She enjoyed traveling and spending winters in Mission, Texas. She was a lifelong member of the Netherlands Reformed Congregation. Those left to cherish her memory are her husband of 55 years, Wayne Van Voorst of Sioux Center; three children and their spouses: Curt (Jewel) Van Voorst, Kristi (Kent) Hoogendoorn, Alex (Rachel) Van Voorst all of Sioux Center; 10 grandchildren: Michaela (Luke) Lindhout, Keaton (Kayla) Hoogendoorn, Devin (Brianna) Van Voorst, Keanna (Byron) Koenen, Karter Hoogendoorn, Bridger Van Voorst, Lily Van Voorst, Adalyn Van Voorst, Eva Van Voorst and Mila Van Voorst; six great grandchildren: Keira, Kendra, Jayde, Kinley, Emmett and Zachary. She is also survived by a brother, Gary (Norma) Van Den Berg; in-laws: Janet (Willard) Post, Sheryl (Norm) Vande Berg, James (Linda) Van Voorst, Carl (Jan) Van Voorst, Esther Van Der Brink, Marv (Janice) Van Voorst, Norma (Steve) Van Vliet, Ruth Vander Helm, Leann (Mike) Klootwyk, Dave (Lisa) Van Voorst. Fred Haan, age 69, of Sioux Center, IA died on September 15, 2023, at Sioux Center Health. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a. m. Tuesday, September 19, 2023, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center, with Reverend Thomas Haan and Reverend Kurt Monroe officiating. Burial will follow at the Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center, IA. In lieu of flowers, the family would like memorials directed to Dordt University in Sioux Center, IA. Frederick George Haan was born on July 10, 1954, in Grand Rapids, MI, the son of Reverend Norman and Joyce (Meyners) Haan. On March 21, 1975, Fred was united in marriage to Cheryl Lynn De Vries at the Phoenix Christian Reformed Church in Phoenix, AZ. The couple lived in Phoenix for a time and Fred owned and operated Haan Printing. Later they moved to Sioux Center, IA, where he started working for Dordt College (Now known as Dordt University). They raised three children, Eric, Paula, and David. Memberships throughout Fred's life included Phoenix CRC in Phoenix, AZ, Bethel CRC, Faith CRC, and currently First CRC all Sioux Center, IA. Fred loved serving as a deacon and had a real heart for those in need. He was a deacon at Phoenix CRC, Faith CRC, and First CRC. He served on the Outreach Committee as well as the Foundation Board. He was also very involved in the Siouxland Diaconal Conference and was a Cadet counselor for several years. He loved golfing, fishing, watching football games, movies, and NASCAR races, playing Rook, listening to a wide variety of music, watching the History Channel, and reading about current events and politics. Due to his illness, Pompe's Disease, he had to give up many of his hobbies. But since he retired in 2019, he also learned to love doing puzzles and reading books about historical figures and politics. Fred is survived by his wife of forty-eight years, Cheryl Haan of Sioux Center, IA; three children, Eric (Amy) Haan of Luverne, MN, Paula (Craig) Hilbelink of Orange City, IA, and David (Paige) Haan of Sioux Falls, SD; five siblings, Norma Voss of Mesa, AZ, Rich (Marsha) Haan of Grand Rapids, MI, Tom (Marilyn) Haan of Longview, WA, Brenda (Kevin) Greenfield of Waupun, WI, and Kevin (Angela) Haan of Waupun, WI; nieces, nephews, and other extended family members. He was preceded in death by his first-born son, Peter John Haan; and his parents, Norm, and Joyce Haan.
