Lenwood James "Lenny" Christ, age 80, of Keshena, passed away on Thursday October 5, 2023, at his home. Lenwood was born on June 6, 1943, in Keshena to the late Arthur and Mary (Moses) Christ. Following high school Lenny enlisted in the United States Army where he served his country for three years and received an honorable discharge. He owned and operated Power Clean Inc. in Fond du Lac before moving on to work as a carman and welder for the Soo Line Railroad and then Chicago Northwestern Railroad. He also served as Vice Chairman for the United States and Canada's Local Union of Carmen. Lenny was a very social man with a great sense of humor, he loved spending his time visiting with friends and family. In Lenny's free time, he enjoyed hunting, boating, and fishing on Lake Michigan for salmon. He also loved gambling at the casinos and taking long, scenic drives. Lenny is survived by his children, Bryan (Paula Bergsbaken) Christ and Tonya Christ; a grandson, Taylor (Diondre Shawano) Eppler; a great-grandson, Noah; and a sister, Dorothy Steinbarth. He is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Lenny is preceded in death by his parents, siblings, Aloysius Christ, Donald Christ and Marilyn Gardner, and his former wife, Judy. A memorial gathering for Lenny will be held on Thursday October 12, 2023, at Swedberg Funeral Home in Gresham beginning at 11:00am and continuing until a time of sharing at 1:00pm. Inurnment will follow at Gresham Public Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by the Gresham American Legion Post #390, of which Lenny was a proud member. Memorial Donation

Virginia Rose "Rosie" (Neconish) Waupoose, age 85, passed away on Saturday October 7, 2023, surrounded by family, at her home in Keshena. Rose was born on April 21, 1938, in Chicago, Illinois to the late Freeman and Madeline (Hanks) Neconish. On December 13, 1959, Virginia was united in marriage to LeRoy J. "Budge" Waupoose. She lived and worked in Milwaukee and Chicago before retiring and returning to the Keshena area. Virginia was active in the community and the Native American Church. She was a foster mother to many throughout the years. She was a talented cook and made amazing fry bread. In Virginia's free time, she enjoyed playing bingo, making trips to the casino, playing cards and dice and attending Pow Wows. Virginia is survived by her children, Lori Eiting, Gordon Neconish, Elroy Waupoose Fox, Colleen (Gary) Dodge, Sr. , Furlin (Joyce) Hall, Gerry (Teri) Hall, Trudy Guenette, Wayne Brown Swenson, and Connie (Colin Kelley) Freeman; grandchildren, Krystofer (Jenny), Gordon "Rocky", Myah, Toria, Leah, Gary, Jr. , Somer, Misti, Cody, Brody, Robi, Sara (Matt), Daniel (Holly), Melissa (Jackson), Mikey, Mariah, MaKaylee, Dacian, and Krystal; and numerous great-grandchildren. She is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Joylen Mae Whitney, age 82, passed away at home surrounded by her family on Monday, September 18, 2023, in Keshena. Joylen was born on June 17, 1941, in Keshena to the late Martin and Marie (Tucker) Wilber Sr. She graduated from Shawano High School and went on to graduate from Beauty School in Milwaukee. She then graduated from Fox Valley Technical College in Appleton in accounting. Joylen worked at the Menominee Tribal Offices, Outagamie County Youth Services, and James River Neenah. Joylen was dedicated to her children and her family. She cherished her time spent with them and especially with her grandchildren. In her free time, she loved dancing, playing cards, and going to the casino. She will be dearly missed. Joylen is survived by her children, Lois Jean Grignon Peeters and Gerald Anthony Grignon; her 10 grandchildren, Jeremiah, Marissa, Jessey, Andrea, Thyler, Matthew, Christopher, David, Timothy, and Joshua; her siblings, Allen (Pam) Wilber, Warren Wilber, Martina Frechette, Renita (Roger) Corn, Richard (Juanita) Wilber, Daryl (Marcene) Wilber, and Lynette (Dave)Turney. She is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Marie; her children Guy "J. R. Evanelle "Boo" Sanapaw (Kakwitch), age 76, of Keshena passed away on Sunday August 27, 2023, at her home surrounded by her family. Evanelle was born on March 17, 1947, in Keshena to the late Elmer and Edith (Oshkenaniew) Kakwitch, Sr. On August 13, 1966, she was united in marriage to Joseph Sanapaw, Sr. , in Marinette, Wisconsin. Joseph preceded Evanelle in death in 2017. She lived most of her life on the Menominee Reservation. Evanelle loved going to bingo, playing slots, watching Hallmark, Young and the Restless, jigsaw puzzles, was an avid Packer Fan, loved watching NASCAR and playing cards with her friends. Evanell is survived by her eleven children, Richard (Brenda) "Rowdy" Sanapaw, Kenneth (Geraldine) Sanapaw, Stefanie (Marty) Pamonicutt, Thomas "Tee Jay" (Sasha "Sassy") Sanapaw, Shawn (Sheena) Sanapaw, Kristin Sanapaw, Roberta James, Raymond (Debra) Sanapaw, Charlene "Chuck Mudd" Hawpetoss, , Janet Sanapaw and Frances Sanapaw; many grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren; and siblings Elmer Kakwitch Jr. , Robert Kakwitch Sr. , and Tracy Kakwitch. On August 15, 2023, Benjamin "Nailbender" Warrington started his journey to meet up with his mother, father, brother and so many friends. Ben was a Veteran of the United States Army and was stationed in Michigan where he met his wife Betty Brown of 64 years. After the military they moved home to the Menominee Reservation where they raised their five children, Carmela, Annette, Warren, Ben and Elizabeth. Ben also had a few extra sons, Dwayne "KitKat" Kitson, Michael "Bitzen" Peters and Josh Lawe whom he spent some fun times with through the years. Ben and Betty opened their home to many children over the years, who became more like their own children rather than guests. Ben was a member of the Menominee Fire Department for 42 years serving as fire chief for many years and was one of the three owners of Tri-Builders for 40 years building homes in the surrounding areas. Building, remodeling and woodworking was his specialty and he enjoyed it up until his final days. Ben is survived by his wife, Betty; children, Carmela (Clint), Annette (Andrew), Warren (Leah), Ben (Julie) and Elizabeth (Mark); sister, Marcia Hause of Michigan; nine grandchildren, Mary Morning, Brittany Cook, Miranda Cook, Jesse Warrington, Clarissa Pamonicutt, Monea Warrington, Mitchell Warrington, Montoya Waukau and Lillith Wenzel; eight great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. Ben is preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin Warrington and Mary Brooks; stepfather, Jesse Brooks; brother, Joseph Warrington; special friends, Ronald "Ozzy" Oshkosh, Lyle "Buddy" Tucker, Cecil Pollock, Lyle Ninham, Donald "Donny" Weso; and traveling companion Pat Haut. Mary "Emma" Lynn Knope age 71 passed away August 14, 2023. Mary resided on Wood Duck Way in Keshena for 22 years. She was born on August 9, 1952, at the Keshena Hospital and was the only survivor of triplets as well as the only known triplet birth at the Keshena Hospital, born to the late Henry Fredenberg and Margaret Newton. When Mary was 2 months old, she was adopted by the best set of parents she could have ever asked for: the late Elmer Knope and Cora Emma Anna (Moesch) Knope. Mary lived in Shawano most of her life and attended St James Lutheran School for 8 years where she was very proud of being a school cheerleader for 4 years. She went on to graduate from Shawano High School in 1970. Following high school, she married Donald Bartels and moved to Cicero, Illinois for several years. Mary then returned to Shawano and worked as a waitress in many area supper clubs, then became a certified nursing assistant working at the Shawano Convalescent Center for many years. In 2009 she graduated from Kaplan University with an associate degree in medical assistant. Following that, Mary worked as a Food Service Manager for the Menominee Indian School District, then became a Nutritional Educator at the Menominee Tribal Day Care, then Keshena meal site as the Head Cook, and lastly she worked as a Nutritional Educator at the Menominee Indian Tribe Food Distribution program. Mary owned and operated "Clean Sweep" residential cleaning business on Legend Lake for 22 years and made many friends through the business. Retiring in 2022 due to health reasons. Mary always made sure she worked hard to care for her children. Mary really enjoyed following several R & B bands in and around Wisconsin and neighboring states; she loved the Risque band (MI), Westside band (MN), Area Code band (NY), BBI band (Chicago), and the NuCorp band (Ohio) and each member of these bands were her best friends. If any of these bands were playing within driving distance, it was guaranteed that Mary and Alice Kessen had front row seating. She loved to travel to see great friends and relatives in Illinois, Minnesota, Georgia, and Arizona. If you asked her to go, her bags would already be packed!She was probably the biggest bird watcher east of the Mississippi River, she especially loved watching cardinals and hummingbirds. Mary had about 12 feeders out in the spring, her true passion. She always looked forward to visiting with friends and relatives, especially her children and granddaughters. During warm weather, Mary could always be found sitting out on her deck alone or with friends and family. She loved going on the lake pontooning as well as just spending time with her family swimming with the kids and always doing her swan dive off the dock. Mary always looked forward to going to see her favorite bands play! She loved canning and taught it as well and usually had enough to share with others, especially her dill pickles which her children and friends loved. Lastly, she was a huge Chicago Bears fan and a huge Cubies fan. Win or lose they were her teams!She is survived by the love of her life, of 27 years, Richard Pieper; two wonderful sons, Bradley (Justine) Knope of Shawano, and Chad Bartels of Keshena; three beautiful granddaughters, Chloe Knope, Carly Knope, and Kylie Bartels; sister, Sally Knope-Schick; brother-in-law, Lance Maltbey; nieces, Averi (Rod) Peralta and their children, Nicole (Jeff) Wachowiak and their son, Andrew; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Matuszewski; her BEST friend for life (to be exact 65 years) meeting in kindergarten at St James School, Kathy (Moesch) DeWitt and their children, Ryan (Natalie) DeWitt, Allysa and Alexis, Trish (Derrick) Dewitt; sister-in-law, Nanette (Pamonicutt) Corn, her children, Craig (Lori), Marty (Stephanie), JJ Corn; cousins, Jim Fredenberg, Lacey (Bunny) Fredenberg, Dave (Rusty) Fredenberg, and Dave (Belle) Burkart all of Arizona. Friends from Georgia, John and Bonnie Stickney, their children and grandchildren, as well as Bob and Debbie of Yulee, Florida. As well as many, many wonderful friends and neighbors. S. Verna Fowler, age 81, passed away on August 12, 2023, at her home in Keshena. Verna was born on July 1, 1942, in Keshena to the late Sanford and Louise (Pecore) Folwer Sr. She graduated from Shawano High School then went to college at Silver Lake College. Verna graduated from the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks with a PHD in educational leadership. She was the founder and former President of College of Menominee Nation. Verna was the past principal at Sacred Heart Catholic School in Shawano and taught at many schools around Wisconsin. She was a nun at Sisters of New Genesis in Green Bay diocese. Verna was a member of the Franciscan order for many years. She was a member of St. Anthonys Catholic Church in Neopit. Verna is survived by her special niece, Joan Delabeau; lifelong friend Sister Jeanette Trost; and many other nieces and nephews. Verna is preceded in death by her siblings, Marlene, Joan, Clara, Sanford Jr. , Shirley, Bernard, Leon, Al, Calvin, Eugene and Llewellyn Dickenson and parents, Sanford Sr. , and Louise. Daniel J. Tomow Sr. , age 51, passed away on Tuesday July 25, 2023, at his home in Keshena. Daniel was born on March 23, 1972, in Shawano to the late Bernard and Genevieve (Matchopatow) Tomow. He graduated from Menominee Indian High School in 1990. On May 3, 1997, he was united in marriage to Mary Maskewit in Keshena. Daniel worked at different jobs over the years including security guard, sawyer, log home supply in Shawano, Interlink Lumber Mill in Bonduel and at St. Michaels Catholic Church as grounds keeper. In his free time, Daniel loved hunting, fishing and listening to classic rock. He enjoyed playing cribbage, poker and gambling. Daniel loved his 4x4 Ford trucks. Daniel is survived by his wife of 26 years, Mary; their children, Danielle, Daniel Jr. , Maskiwinenikiuh "Joy" (Pat) Kitson, Dale (Karen)Boivin; eleven grandchildren; siblings, Linda Tourtillott, Jerilynn (Daniel) Carson, Alan (Kandice) Tomow Sr. , and John (Tina) Mueller; and five godchildren, Alan, Kemewan, Shane, Madeline and Ryland. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
