Sarah Ann Harding

location-icon

Hampton, VA

Sarah Ann Harding (“Pinky or Smiley”), 62, a long-time resident of Phoebus in Hampton, VA departed this life and earned her wings, Tuesday, February 20, 2024. She was born September 18, 1961, in Plain Dealing, LA, to Earline Benson and Othree Ellis, where she was one of eight (8) children. She was preceded in death by her beloved mother, Earline Benson, who stressed the importance of family to Sarah and her siblings, her Mother-in-Love, Barbara Harding and her Father-in-Love, Fred Harding. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Sammy Benson. Sarah was baptized at an early age at First Missionary Baptist Church in Plain Dealing, LA. She joined Antioch Baptist Church when she relocated to Hampton, Virginia with her loving, God-ordained husband Darryl Harding, after serving her country in the US Army. She was a faithful, hardworking and committed member of Antioch Baptist Church until the Lord called her home. She served on the Senior Usher Board, where she followed God and faithfully served her church, which she genuinely loved. She also was a member of the Tidewater Usher Boards Conference, where she served as an Usher on several occasions, including the Hampton University Ministers Conference. She was a committed and faithful volunteer with Antioch Improvement Ministries (“The AIM Center”), where she helped serve the homeless and hungry for over 10 years until her health prevented her from serving. She always said that she volunteered at the AIM Center to take the place of her Mother-in-Love, Barbara Harding, after she earned her wings. Sarah was educated in the Plain Dealing school system where she attended Carrie Martin Elementary and graduated from Plain Dealing High School. She retired from the US Postal Service, where she was known as “Smiley,” after many years of service as a Clerk in 2018. She loved God, her family, especially the newest member, her great-granddaughter Naomi, who brought her extreme pleasure and joy over the last two years and her friends. She also loved travel, which she did frequently, especially visits back home to Plain Dealing, LA. She appreciated the importance of family time and vacations. Sarah was a servant. She assisted everyone who asked for help and some who did not. She gave unconditionally and without judgement to those that she loved. Anyone that met her felt instantly at home and would be smiling and laughing in no time. She had a heart of gold and shared her time, treasure and wisdom with her family and friends. She supported many charitable organizations such as the AIM Center. Sarah leaves to celebrate her life and cherish her memory, her soulmate and husband of 43 years, Darryl Harding; an Aunt Gussie Lee West and an Uncle Curtis Ellis (Mattie Mae), both from Plain Dealing, LA. She also leaves behind four brothers, Robert Benson (Evelyn) of Kansas City, MO, Walter Benson (Alice) of Bossier City, LA, Barrie Benson (Angela) of Hampton, VA and Reginald Cook of TX. She is survived by two sisters, Carol Benson and Ethel Thomas (John) of Plain Dealing, LA and a sister-in-love, Scarlet Wallace (Keith, Sr.) of Hampton, VA. Left to continue her legacy of love are a son, Terrance Harding, Sr. (Stephanie), who was the love of her life, a grandson, Terrance, Jr. (“Lil T”), who had a very special relationship with his grandmother and a great- granddaughter, Naomi (“Nay-Nay”) who was her world. Sarah also leaves to cherish her memory a host of devoted nieces, nephews, cousins and friends including special, long-time friends and sisters and brother in Christ, Annette Jones, Elaine Corley, Delores Adams and Alton Blackley. 55 “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?”[a] 56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. I Corinthians 15:55-57 To to the family or in memory of Sarah Ann Harding, please
