Laverne Elizabeth Martin Jeschke, 94, passed away on September 8, 2023, at the Gosnell Hospice House in Scarborough. She was surrounded by her four children in her final moments. Laverne was born in 1929 in Chicago, Illinois. The life she loved really started when she met Donald Jeschke on a street car in Chicago when she was 14-years old. They got married after the war on August 12, 1950 at St. Rita's Church. The two were inseparable until Don passed away in 2015 after 65 years of marriage. Don's job with Mobil Oil led to the family moving across the U. S. including Missouri, Texas, California, New Jersey and Virginia plus an international assignment in Tripoli, Libya. It was this overseas assignment that instilled their lifelong passion for travel. They retired to Naples, Florida where they lived for almost 25 years. Much of their retirement years were filled with travel including the German Christmas markets, Switzerland (Leysin and Zermatt), an African Safari and multiple cruises around the world. In 2012, they moved to The Cedars in Portland, Maine to be closer to family and share in the wonderful support and companionship the Cedars community provided. Their children were provided a consistently loving home. Laverne fostered a love of family, learning and travel. Laverne's greatest pride was her children, grand-children and great-grandchildren. She never missed a chance to participate in every family event - births, baptisms, graduations, Christmases, and anniversaries -- making her an integral part of their lives. And, each night wouldn't be complete without her vodka martini, on the rocks with olives. It gives her family peace and joy to think she is in heaven with Don on a cruise having their favorite cocktail. Laverne is survived by her 4 children and their spouses, Susan and Bob Vautin, Judy and Peter Buckley, Jim Jeschke (Patti in heaven) and Barbara and Dennis Curran, eight grandchildren and currently eight great-grandchildren. A private graveside service is planned for the family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Hospice of Southern Maine.

Kitty Miriam Weiss Penner, 90, of South Portland Maine, died November 24, 2023 at the Gosnell House in Scarborough, surrounded by her loving family. Born August 7, 1933, to Stella Zehngut Weiss and Leon Weiss in Vienna Austria, she and her sister Inge were among The 50 Jewish children rescued from Nazi peril in 1939 by Gilbert and Eleanor Kraus of Philadelphia (see US Holocaust Museum www. ushmm. org and the book "50 Children" by Steven Pressman)Her parents rejoined their daughters and settled in the Bronx, NY where Kitty showed early promise as a 'maker', a painter/sculptor/fashion designer/seamstress/interior designer who created using any and all materials at hand. A graduate of Manhattan's Music and Art High School and Barnard College, she (in her own, self-deprecating words) 'had opportunities to make a name for herself as an artist but, failed to follow through and took the safe and easy path with marriage in 1953 and motherhood in 1958 and 1962. ' Her children and grandchildren are glad she chose the path she did. Kitty settled in Maine in 1977 and continued her art practice, painting, drawing, writing, gardening, sewing, and creating up until just days before her death. Though she lost her entire extended family in the Holocaust, and, more recently, lost her parents and her sister Inge, Kitty always called herself 'the luckiest girl in the world'. Surviving is her beloved partner of more than 25 years, Pat Holt, her sons Charles and Jonathan, her grandchildren Julia, Leah, Cooper and Ellis, her devoted niece Tina and daughters Anya and Tess, and her sister in law Prudy Garbotz and brother in law Byrne Holt. Her body was offered for donation to the medical school of UNE. Per her request there will be no funeral.Show more

Joseph R. Foley, a longtime resident of Cape Elizabeth who spearheaded the successful effort to establish a Ronald McDonald House in Portland, died Nov. 24 in Scarborough. He was 97. After one of his children was seriously injured in an accident in Vermont in 1986, he and his wife, the late Catharine Bagshaw Foley, spent three months at the Ronald McDonald House in Burlington. He returned home determined to bring the same services to families of hospitalized children in the Portland area and beyond. He co-founded Stand By Me, a nonprofit dedicated to establishing a Ronald McDonald House in Portland near Maine Medical Center, and diligently garnered support from Maine McDonalds owner/operators, the business community, and civic groups. He spoke to groups throughout the region, recounting the day he and Catharine received "the phone call no parent wants to get," describing their experience in Vermont, and urging potential supporters to join him in the Stand By Me effort. Years of hard work culminated in the opening of the Ronald McDonald House in 1995. He served as co-chair of the Stand By Me board of directors and was the first recipient of the Heart of Gold Award from Ronald McDonald House Charities-Maine, recognizing his extraordinary efforts in support of the project. He helped oversee the facility's subsequent expansion, which has enabled the facility to serve more than 30 families each night near the medical center cost-free while their children are undergoing treatment. The project was just one part of Joe's community service efforts in the Portland area, work that led him to receive the Jefferson Award for Public Service, a prestigious honor recognizing those who provide outstanding support to their communities.
