Samuel M. Brubaker, 83, (Mechanicsburg, PA; formerly of Arcanum, OH) died on November 17, 2023, due to progression of lymphoma. Born December 19, 1939, in Elizabethtown, PA, to Menno and Anna May Brubaker, Sam was a farm boy and life-long member of the Brethren in Christ (BIC) Church. After completing school at Messiah Academy and Elizabethtown College (1960), he attended University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine (1964). His commitment to the church's pacifist teaching brought him and his growing family to the BIC Navajo Mission hospital for three years, fulfilling national service as a conscientious objector. In 1972, he established a private surgery practice in Darke County, OH, where he served the community for 29 years. Sam was a gardener (as the saying goes, "you can't take the country out of the boy"), a member of the church choir, and an avid outdoorsman (as the hunting and fishing trophies on his walls attest). His children and grandchildren have numerous woodworking projects he created, often with lumber from the family woods. In retirement, he maintained his surgical skills by working brief stints at rural U. S. hospitals in need of a surgeon. His adventurous nature took him on backcountry hunting trips as well as international travel. He supported the work of the BIC church through local congregations as well as on regional, national, and ecumenical boards, and as a delegate to the National Association of Evangelicals in the 1980s where he co-chaired the organization's Social Action Commission. Sam's commitment to sharing his understanding of Christian faith shaped years of teaching adult Sunday School classes and writing for church publications. He was preceded in death by his wife of over 50 years, Lucy (Lenhert), and a grandson. He is survived by three children, Karen Haldeman (Grantville, PA), Winifred Haggard (Norristown, PA), and Philip Morice Brubaker (Tulsa, OK), six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three siblings, David Brubaker, Rachel Wenger, and Martha Starr; his sister Esther Horst preceded him in death. A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 29, 4:00 p. m. , with visitation starting at 2:30 p. m. , at Grantham Church, 421 Grantham Road, Mechanicsburg, PA. According to his wishes, Sam's remains have been donated to Humanity Gifts Registry, an organization that receives and distributes bodies donated to medical schools for teaching purposes. His ashes will be interred beside Lucy's in Englewood, OH. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts be made to Mennonite Central Committee (mcc. org) and DoctorsWithoutBorders. org.Show more
