Samuel Md

Age - 83

November 22, 2023

Samuel M. Brubaker, 83, (Mechanicsburg, PA; formerly of Arcanum, OH) died on November 17, 2023, due to progression of lymphoma. Born December 19, 1939, in Elizabethtown, PA, to Menno and Anna May Brubaker, Sam was a farm boy and life-long member of the Brethren in Christ (BIC) Church. After completing school at Messiah Academy and Elizabethtown College (1960), he attended University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine (1964). His commitment to the church's pacifist teaching brought him and his growing family to the BIC Navajo Mission hospital for three years, fulfilling national service as a conscientious objector. In 1972, he established a private surgery practice in Darke County, OH, where he served the community for 29 years. Sam was a gardener (as the saying goes, "you can't take the country out of the boy"), a member of the church choir, and an avid outdoorsman (as the hunting and fishing trophies on his walls attest). His children and grandchildren have numerous woodworking projects he created, often with lumber from the family woods. In retirement, he maintained his surgical skills by working brief stints at rural U. S. hospitals in need of a surgeon. His adventurous nature took him on backcountry hunting trips as well as international travel. He supported the work of the BIC church through local congregations as well as on regional, national, and ecumenical boards, and as a delegate to the National Association of Evangelicals in the 1980s where he co-chaired the organization's Social Action Commission. Sam's commitment to sharing his understanding of Christian faith shaped years of teaching adult Sunday School classes and writing for church publications. He was preceded in death by his wife of over 50 years, Lucy (Lenhert), and a grandson. He is survived by three children, Karen Haldeman (Grantville, PA), Winifred Haggard (Norristown, PA), and Philip Morice Brubaker (Tulsa, OK), six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three siblings, David Brubaker, Rachel Wenger, and Martha Starr; his sister Esther Horst preceded him in death. A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 29, 4:00 p. m. , with visitation starting at 2:30 p. m. , at Grantham Church, 421 Grantham Road, Mechanicsburg, PA. According to his wishes, Sam's remains have been donated to Humanity Gifts Registry, an organization that receives and distributes bodies donated to medical schools for teaching purposes. His ashes will be interred beside Lucy's in Englewood, OH. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts be made to Mennonite Central Committee (mcc. org) and DoctorsWithoutBorders. org.Show more

Douglas Leighty

Douglas Leighty

Age - 62

November 14, 2023

Doug Leighty, 62, of Dillsburg, died in his home surrounded by loving family after succumbing to a long and hard-fought battle with Multiple Sclerosis on November 12, 2023. Doug was born in Connellsville Pennsylvania in 1961 to Melvin and Marlene Leighty, who were ministers in their local church. Doug's childhood was filled with love, friends, and family. Whether he was hanging out with his sister, Tina, or playing piano at church, or practicing with his friends on the school basketball team, Doug was always active and enjoying life. Doug attended Rimersburg High School before earning his bachelor's degree in computer science at Clarion University. He would go on to work for 32 years in the Pennsylvania State Department of Revenue as a Senior Technologist, where he had a distinguished career that included multiple awards and recognitions for his many contributions. Doug met the love of his life, Lou Ann, in 1980, at a Pennsylvania Youth Camp for the church they were both a part of. They would go on to spend a lot of time together dating over the next two years. Lou Ann would even accompany Doug to the university computer lab for date nights when the homework was starting to pile up. The loving couple would eventually start their 41-year journey of marriage together on August 7, 1982. Doug and Lou Ann were excited to start a family of their own and their three children, Devon, Sharaya, and Logan meant the world to them. Over the years, there were many fond memories of long road trips to see family and friends as well as many a competitive and hilarious game night. From the beginning they were always encouraging and supportive of their children's interests and passions as well as their children's friends who they loved like their own kids. In recent years, they experienced a new kind of joy as they became grandparents for the first time. Outside of his family, Doug was loved by so many friends. Whether it was during his long and successful career, volunteering at his church, working as a camp counselor, and many others, he always made a positive impact on those around him. Doug loved to write and perform music. As a talented pianist and vocalist, he could often be found at his keyboard working on new material or rehearsing for an upcoming worship service. He loved games and brain teasers. He particularly enjoyed Scrabble which he was nationally ranked in and competed in many tournaments. In California in 1982 he competed and won the National Championship of the Atari game Centipede. He went on to represent the United States at the World Championships in Germany where he placed 2nd. Everyone who knew Doug remembers him for his wit and love of puns. He was always quick with a joke or a play on words. His inside jokes, movies quotes, and catchphrases will live on in those that knew him. We could not have asked for a better Husband, Father, Brother, Son, or Friend, and we will miss him every day. Doug's memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved him. Doug was preceded in death by his Parents, Melvin and Marlene Leighty, his Father-in-Law Howard Hunt and is survived by his Sister Tina Renee Dsouza, his wife Lou Ann Leighty, his children Devon Leighty and his wife Erika Leighty and grandson Bruin Leighty, Sharaya Bond and her husband Aaron Bond, and Logan Leighty and his fiancee Ashley Kessler, along with many extended family members. A memorial service followed by a luncheon will be held on Friday, November 17th at 11:00AM at Christ Community Church located at 1201 Slate Hill Road, Camp Hill, PA 17011 In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in honor of Doug Leighty to the PAWoundedWarriors. orgShow more
