"Jim Mims, 90, of High Point, NC, passed away peacefully at Pennybyrn, High Point, NC on December 6, 2023 after a lengthy illness. Born in Greensboro, NC, he was the youngest son of John Brown Mims and Dewey Coble Mims, who proceeded him in death as did his brothers, John Brown Mims, Jr. and Robert Wallace Mims. He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Katheryn Wall Mims, son James Edwin Mims, Jr. (Robin), granddaughter, Logan Elizabeth Mims and daughter Laura Lane Mims (George Arnold). Jim was a graduate of Greensboro Senior High School, attended Wake Forest University and graduated from Guilford College in 1956 receiving a BA Degree with a major in Economics. Upon graduation, he worked in real estate and agricultural chemical manufacturing before beginning a 30 year career in banking. In 1967, he started with NCNB (now Bank of America) serving in commercial and corporate lending positions in Greensboro and Charlotte. In his last 13 years with NCNB, he held a variety of city, area and regional executive positions in Eden, NC, Raleigh, NC and Tampa, FL. He retired from NCNB in 1986 and returned to banking positions in Greensboro. At the time of his final retirement in 1997, he was Chairman and CEO of Triad Bank. In his early years and after his retirement, Jim loved to play swing music on the saxophone with groups ranging in size from 3-piece combos up to 20-piece orchestras. He particularly enjoyed playing with the Burt Massengale Band and an 8-piece group called Just Swing - both bands based in Greensboro. While living in Eden, NC, Jim, and the Morehead High School band director formed an 18-piece rehearsal band which was made up of other area band directors, lawyers and business owners. The band only performed for charitable causes in the communities where the band members lived. Over a three-year period, the band raised over $40,000. 00 for local charities. Jim and Katheryn literally built two lake houses on the weekends and during summer vacations. The first house they built was on Smith Mountain Lake and the other on Lake Gaston. Each home took over a year to complete. The entire family and many friends enjoyed time spent on the lake and at their vacation home on Bald Head Island. An avid golfer, Jim had a love/hate relationship with the BHI Club golf course as it had water, water everywhere! Jim was an active member of West Market Street United Methodist Church for over 30 years where he sang in the choir, served on the Board of Trustees and the finance committee. Visitation will be at West Market Street United Methodist Church, on December 16, 2023 in the Parlor beginning at 1:00 p. m. and ending at 1:45 p. m. Following visitation, a memorial service will be held in the sanctuary at 2:00 p. m. There will be a private graveside service.
