Larry Rugh, an esteemed Air Force veteran and beloved family man, passed away on September 27, 2023, at his residence in Aptos, California. He was surrounded by his devoted wife of nearly 54 years, Diana; his loving daughters, Laura and Ginger; and his cherished collies, Jasmine and Jasper. Born on April 11, 1949, in Upland, California, Larry was the youngest of five siblings. He was a proud alumnus of Bonita High School in Laverne, California, where he displayed his athletic abilities on the baseball and tennis teams. After graduation, Larry moved to Prescott Valley, Arizona with his parents. It was here that he met the love of his life, Diana. Larry's bravery was evident during the Vietnam War when he served with distinction in the Air Force. He learned to fly and undertook more than 450 missions, a true testament to his commitment and valor. Beyond his military service, Larry was passionate about family, gardening, home improvement projects, photography, camping, basketball, and baseball. The beach held a particularly special place in his heart. He was the foundation of many family traditions, from festive holiday celebrations to the cherished weekly taco and game nights. His signature humor, complete with an endless supply of bad jokes, brought laughter to all who knew him. Larry's rich legacy continues through his adored grandchildren: Audrey, Micaela, Ian, Gavin, Nyx, and Summer. Larry leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins, including Rod Rugh, his wife Beverly, and their daughters Cheryl--with her children Eli and Bella--and Cherrie--with her children Braden and Kirsten. He was preceded in death by his parents, Emil and Zelma Rugh; brothers Vance, Vern, and Eston; and sister, Betty Boyd. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks for donations to UCSF Giving in support of cancer research. The outpouring of love, prayers, and support from friends and family during this difficult time has been deeply appreciated. Nicholas Hathaway, poet, athlete and gentle soul, passed away Sept. 30 in Watsonville, Calif. He was 71. Hathaway grew up in Aptos where he developed into a great baseball player, throwing a no-hitter for Aptos High and helping lead Cabrillo Junior College to the small college playoffs in 1972. He developed a love for words, perhaps an inheritance from his father, Capt. William K. Hathaway, a former pilot turned writer. Hathaway served in the U. S. Airforce with his wife Sharon Nichols and fathered a son, Thomas Gareth Hathaway. For the last four decades of his life, Hathaway coped with schizophrenia, relaying his conversations with angels and demons with both humor and conviction. He had a passion for board games and attended his son's wedding at a Portland game shop in a monk's costume. He loved writing poetry in the woods of Nisene Marks State Park, where he found peace in the beauty of nature. In the last years of his life, he charmed the caring staff of Valley Convalescent home with his observations of the universe and the behavior of other residents. Besides his son, Thomas, he is survived by his granddaughter Rose, Thomas' wife Katie, and brothers William and Robert. Service details: Nisene Marks State Park on Thursday, October 5, 2023 at 3pm. Helen Mello

Helen Mary Mello, 96 years old, passed away on August 6, 2023, at Aegis Living with Hospice Care in Aptos, California of congestive heart failure. Born in California, she spent her early life living in the village of Serreta, Terceira, Portugal after her father died when she was 2 years old. What was meant to be just a visit, she and her mother stayed for ten years. Older brother returned to California earlier for school and farming. In spite of missing her father, she had happy childhood memories of living with family and playing with friends on the island. In her adult life, she would return many times with the enthusiasm of a young girl going off to a favorite summer camp. Her last two vacations there were in 2013 and 2015. In 1947, she married the love of her life, Henry Mello Jr. at a dance in Newman, Ca. and they lived their entire married life in Los Banos in the dairy business. A son, Tim was born in 1948 and a daughter Alois in 1951. They were the best kind of partners. He, a steady, dependable presence and she mainly a happy housewife and mother. Together they shared 64 years filled with countless friendships and get-togethers, world travels, laughter and loss. In January of 2021, Helen moved to New Bethany Residential and Nursing Care in Los Banos which was a special place to her. She and Dad had volunteered there for many years since it opened in the community. For many years, Helen also volunteered as a first grade Classroom Aide at LBE and was especially an empathetic support for non-speaking students, since she herself had to learn to speak English at age 13, while going to school. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Manuel and Emilia Caton (Caetano), son Tim, brother Alerd and husband, Henry. She is survived by her daughter Alois and husband Jim, grandson Sam, nieces, nephews and cousins, in the U. S. , Canada, Azores, and Brazil. A Viewing will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, August 15 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Los Banos followed by the Holy Rosary at 11:30 am and Funeral Mass at 12:00 pm. Rev. Msgr. Harvey Fonseca, O. S. B. , Obl. will officiate. Forrest Willcox

53 Year Resident of Aptos Devoted father, brother, and grandfather, Forrest Willcox passed away peacefully on July 6th, 2023 at his Aptos home. Born in San Jose, California, he was 85 years old. Following graduation from Willow Glen High School in San Jose, Forrest served his country in the US Army. Upon his honorable discharge from the service, he began a career as a firefighter for the City of San Jose in 1959. Forrest retired as a Fire Captain after a career that spanned over 35 years. Forrest was very proud of his son, Mike Willcox, retired San Jose Fire Captain and his Grandson, Jake Taylor, current San Jose Firefighter as they carry on his legacy. Forrest met the love of his life at age 13, Katherine "Kay" Kincaid and they were married in 1959. Kay preceded him in death in 2013. Forrest and Kay were accomplished world travelers and loved spending time with family and friends and were involved in many social groups. They will be remembered for the time they devoted to their children and grandchildren whom they adored. In the time since the passing of Kay, Forrest was fortunate to find another love in Greta Justus. They fondly referred to each other as "life companions". They enjoyed spending time together and sharing their love of sports, family and life. Forrest's passion was restoring antique cars and he was a member for many decades of the San Jose Roadsters Club. He and Kay were active in the club and participated in many "Roadster Round-ups". They were also members of the Aptos United Methodist Church. Forrest will be remembered for his creativity, he had the mind of an engineer and designer and was to able draw, create, fix, and build just about anything. Forrest's son Mike Willcox, his daughter Sherri Harrell and his four beloved grandchildren, Jake, Kaitlyn, Ben and Sara survive him as well as his companion, Greta Justus and his sister Lorena Oakes. He will be laid to rest with military honors on August 3rd, 2023 at California Central Coast Veteran's Cemetery in Seaside. Gloria Scurfield

July 10, 1922 - January 30, 2023 Native of Sacramento Friends and family will gather in Santa Cruz on March 15 to honor and remember the blessed life of Gloria Scurfield who passed away at her home in Aptos at the age of 100 with family by her side. Gloria was born to Clifford and Doris Beyer in Sacramento. She attended C. K. McClatchy High School and Sacramento Junior College, where she received her associate's degree. Gloria was a member of Gamma Delta Sorority and was talented in art and drawing, which led to a career as a topographical draftsman later in life. Gloria enlisted in the US Marine Corps in 1943 and, following boot camp at Marine Corps Base Lejeune, was stationed at Marine Corps Base Quantico where she designed topographical maps during WWII. Following her discharge from the armed forces, she returned to Sacramento, but the ocean air was her tonic. Gloria often told of the summertime trips she took with her family as a little girl from Sacramento over a very rural Highway 17. Her favorite childhood memory was smelling the ocean air and anticipating her arrival in Seabright as their Model A Ford crested the summit. She moved to Aptos in 1994 to be near her family. Gloria didn't care to travel or take vacations. "Just take me to Seabright Beach, that's the only place I need to go," she would often say. Gloria was involved in numerous charitable organizations including Mercy Hospital Guild, Newcomers Club, Junior League, and Dominican Hospital Guild. She was very creative and artistic, loved to garden, and adored animals - especially dogs & ducks! However, she always said that her greatest life achievement was being a mother and "Mimi" to her grandchildren. She is survived by her son Geoffrey Scurfield; son and daughter-in-law John E. Scurfield Jr. and Zoie Scurfield; her daughter and son-in-law Jill and Michael Bates; grandchildren and their spouses: Austin and Erin Bates, Jackie and Buster Brown, Rene and Justin Orozco, Drake Fennelly; great grandchildren: Jackson and Ryan Bates, Cody Brown, Mia and Gregory Orozco; and her nieces and nephews: Jane Weaver, Judy Whitney, David Whelan, and Dave & Steve Scurfield. Gloria was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Scurfield, in 1993; her son, Greg Scurfield, in 2013; and nephew, Don Scurfield, in 2017. A memorial ceremony, concluding with military honors, will be held at Benito and Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel at 11am on March 15, 2023. It was Gloria's wish that everyone wear bright, happy colors, no black or dark attire. A private committal off the coast of Seabright Beach will be held at a later date. Obituary of Tony Aquitania Belmonte Antonio "Tony" Aquitania Belmonte, born December 19, 1956 in Manilla, Philippines, passed away from congestive heart failure on December 30, 2021 at his home in Aptos, California. He was the life of every party he was at and will be remembered for his big smile, strength, and the love he had for his family. Tony was a legend to everyone who had the privilege to know him. After immigrating to Sunnyvale, California from the Philippines with his family at 6 years old, he attended St. Martin Catholic School, followed by St. Francis High. He played basketball all 4 years and was the star of his senior varsity high school team. He continued to play basketball throughout his life including a brief stint on the national team of the Philippines and lunch pick-up games at the YMCA in Palo Alto. His other passions included mountain biking with his friends, taking his '67 Stingray Corvette around the block and trips to Hawaii. A perfect night for Tony included a couple cold Coors Lights, a Warriors game, and lumpia. When he wasn't dancing up a storm or watching sports, he worked as a Designer at Western Electric for 8 years, where he met his lovely wife, Lynn. He then began his career designing satellites at Space Systems Loral (FKA Ford Aerospace) where he worked for over 30 years. Later in life he also worked for Gilig as a design engineer for electric buses. When he retired in 2020 he enjoyed long walks on the beach with his dog, Nyla, and home improvement projects. Though Tony is no longer with us, his spirit and memories live on through his wife: Lynn, their children and their spouses: Amanda and Jon, Kristina and Kevin, Dustin, his father: Pablo, his siblings and their spouses: Al and Eileen, Jacque and Eric, his grandson: Charlie, and all of the friends and extended family who made wonderful memories together with him. Tony has rejoined his mother, Rosita, and his sister, Judy, in heaven. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 am on January 20, 2022 at the St Martin Catholic Church in Sunnyvale. Obituary of James Allan Duncan December 18, 1938 - October 14, 2021 Aptos, California A committal at sea ceremony is planned for James Duncan who passed away at his Aptos home following a lengthy illness. He was 82 years old. Born in San Mateo, California, Jim moved to Vallejo as a youngster and graduated from St. Vincent High School. He had a lifelong love for the sea, and after apprenticing as a machinist at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard, he enrolled in the California Maritime Academy where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in marine engineering as well as a U. S. Coast Guard license as a third assistant engineer in America's merchant marine. For two years, Jim sailed on merchant ships to ports in the Orient, Europe, and South America, where he saw duties that included rescues at sea while transporting people, raw materials, and manufactured goods. Following his sea service, Jim went to work in the marine engineering department at Westinghouse in the Santa Clara Valley. He became a noted engineering specialist in marine propulsion systems as well as land turbines used by the power companies. Jim remained with Northrop Grumman after the company purchased Westinghouse and retired following a career that spanned over 35 years. He and his beloved wife of 56 years, Patricia, were accomplished travelers enjoying many destinations, which included Europe, China, Turkey and his beloved England where he had family. He and Pat moved to Aptos, California 21 years ago where Jim was a member of Seascape Golf Club. He felt blessed to have made many friends golfing, and missed the camaraderie during his past few years of failing health. He is survived by his wife Pat Duncan of Aptos and a host of loving extended family and friends. He will be scattered at sea off the deck of the maritime academy's Training Ship Golden Bear (TSGB) in a private ceremony. Any acts of charity can be made in his memory to Hospice of Santa Cruz or the Scholarship Fund of the California Maritime Academy Foundation, Class of 1963.
