Age - 89

Louis Szekendy Obituary Just shy of his 90th birthday and 70th wedding anniversary, Louis Szekendy passed away peacefully on December 6, 2023 at Holy Cross Rehabilitation in South Bend. Louis was born in South Bend on December 15, 1933 to Charles and Rose (Vargyas) Szekendy. In a chance encounter you'd think was pulled from a Hollywood script, Louis met the woman who would become his lifelong love, Toby Priebe, outside of Adams High School in 1953. The two were married on January 9, 1954 at St. Anthony's Church in South Bend. In 1956, shortly after building the house that would eventually become their home of nearly seven decades, Louis was drafted into the United States Army. He spent the majority of his service at the Erlangen Army Base in Germany, where he manned Howitzers along the waterways until he was honorably discharged in 1957. Louis and Toby would later welcome two children, Judy and Mike, who share their father's birth month, leading to countless combined birthday celebrations over the years. Louis spent his entire working career at Wells Aluminum in North Liberty, often looking forward to the weekends he would spend alongside his father, Charlie, at various area race tracks. Louis raced Charlie's midget car through the 70s and 80s, placing in several races throughout the Midwest. Aside from his immaculate landscaping and car detailing skills, Louis will be best remembered for his love of motorsports, fishing, golfing, bowling and dancing the night away with his wife at clubs across South Bend, even well into his 80s. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 69 years, Toby Szekendy; daughter Judy (Kevin) Henderson; son Mike (Patti) Szekendy; grandchildren Amber Pulford, Ashley (Brad) O'Chap, Bradey (Alexandra) Szekendy, Blake Szekendy, Bryse Szekendy; and great-grandchildren Emmy, Max, Olivia and Reagan. Louis was preceded in death by his parents and his older brother, Charles Jr. Funeral services for Louis will be held at 2:00 p. m. on Monday, December 11, 2023 at Palmer Funeral Home - Welsheimer North Chapel, 17033 Cleveland Road, South Bend.
